Ramana Maharshi and THE Deity of Deities, Sai Baba

Posted by robertpriddy on June 24, 2007

“I am all deities in one. You may endeavour your best for thousands of years and have all mankind with you in your search. But you cannot understand My Reality.” (US ed. of Kasturi’s Sathyam Sivam Sundaram Vol 3 page 315)

“There was no one to understand Me until I created the whole world” (Official biographer N. Kasturi’s direct quote in ‘Pathway to Peace’ p. 64.)

Sathya Sai Baba said in 1968: “This is a human form in which every Divine entity, every Divine principle, that is to say, all the names and forms ascribed by man to God, are manifest… You are very fortunate that you have the chance to experiences the bliss of the vision of the form, which is the form of all gods, now, in this life itself.” (Sathya Sai Speaks Volume VIII. page 99f)

Sathya Sai Baba – guru of Indian Masters, King of all Deities?
Sathya Sai Baba has told various of his servitors of meetings he claimed he had with famous spiritual figures. This information he apparently not dared to state in public himself, as ridicule could surely only follow. He has many such ‘secrets’ which he spreads effectively as rumours in private group interviews, but will not say in public. Such as about a world catastrophe he has told many people is coming, but denied in public. He told V.K. Narasimhan several times about his [unrecorded, unverified] visits to various famous Indian gurus – notably Sri Aurobindo, and Ramana Maharshi, emphasizing that he had had to give some correction to every one of them. I was told I details of this several times by VKN too. These visits would have taken place in the early 1950s, no doubt supposedly when Sathya Sai disappeared from Puttaparthi for longish periods.

Sathya Sai Baba claimed that he had said to Ramana Maharshi that it was unfitting for him not to cover his body properly by wearing only a loincloth. However, Maharshi never took this advice, as it is well know that he wore only a loincloth till his dying day. Further, he has told Dr. Hislop “The Ramana Maharshi inquiry by itself is not good. It must be combined with meditation.” [p 146 ‘Conversations with Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba’ by John Hislop,  new ed. ISBN 81-7208-049-2]. So Sai Baba puts himself above Maharshi, who meditated most of his life! All Maharshi followers meditate above all else, so Sai was talking through his hat!

Therefore, this much acclaimed sage did NOT recognise Sathya Sai Baba’s authority, evidently. Ramana Maharshi had no property whatever, but by comparison Sathya Sai Baba  – who claim to own nothing – lives in the lap of luxury with many palace apartments.

I reported in my notes about V.K. Narasimhan’s repeated accounts to him of Sathya Sai Baba’s visits to Swami Sivananda in Rishikesh in 1957 (See my evidence here –  and read the original report in Sathyam, Siva, Sundaram by N. Kasturi – Vol. 1  p.107f) and to Jiddu Krishnamurthi in Madras. He also met briefly with Swami Muktananda and with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

Sathya Sai further told VKN that he had told Aurobindo and the Mother that, though they were celibate, it was still wrong of them to live in the same apartment because of the common perception of this as setting an example. (Rather remarkable when he, long accused of pedophilia, has openly stated in public that he had three boys sleeping in his bedroom!). That Sathya Sai Baba has never made public these claims suggests how unlikely they are to be true. Add to that the fact that Aurobindo and the mother took not a blind bit of notice of that advice!

Here is this “omnipotent wheelchair avatar” in 2007, behaving more like a doleful wooden idol than an ever-healthy non-ageing miracle man he always claimed he would ever be. His alleged healing powers suggest rather “Physician, heal thyself!”

Sai Baba with N. Kasturi

Sathya Sai Baba selected Prof. N. Kasturi  as his official biographer – a highly impressionable spiritual seeker and college history teacher, who also had a radio chat-show and some reputation as a comic doggerel poet. Kasturi wrote four very florid biographical volumes (‘Sathyam, Sivam, Sundaram’ or ‘Truth, Goodness, Beauty’). The authenticity of these accounts that he naively retells there from uncheckable and clearly most impressionable devotee sources must be seriously questioned. He relied largely on very poor villagers’s stories or beneficiaries of Sai Baba’s grace to become residents within his ashram. By the time they recalled events decades later, no doubt some of them were only to willing to embroider and even invent so that they might benefit from being quoted and recognised by Kasturi and the all-powerful Bhagavan Baba who ruled their village. Here are two examples of such ‘stories’, which are believed by many Sai followers to this day.”A devotee from Kamalapuram was asking Baba to show him some miracle and one day, Baba called him and the members of his family, his mother and the rest, and offered to show them the ten Dasavatharas, the Ten Incarnations of Vishnu! Matsya (the fish), Kurma (the tortoise) and Varaha (the boar) passed off without any incident but, when the terrible form of Narasimha appeared, they shrieked and yelled with fright, fearing that the house might collapse on their heads. They clamoured “Enough,” “Enough,” and Baba calmed down after Mangalarathi (worship of him with a flame) was performed, by persons, who, though they were there, did not see the Forms, because the Vision was not intended for them!” (Sathyam, Sivam, Sundaram Vol. 1 by Prof. N. Kasturi, page 65)

” … the Purohit of a family whose guest Baba was at Mysore was granted, quite unexpectedly, a Vision of Narasimha, and the Srivaishnava Brahmin swooned and did not recover consciousness for several hours.” (Prof. N. Kasturi in Sathyam, Sivam, Sunderam Vol. 1, page 64f.)

Ra. Ganapati adds his shot too: “The Dasavathara Forms were vouchsafed to another gentleman now deceased, a relative of the Karnam family. As a matter of fact, he passed away, because his physical frame was too weak to contain the joy of the Vision. Baba took him to the river and asked him to watch the reflection, His own reflection, in the water. The man announced later that he saw at first Sathya Sai Baba Himself, then, only the halo of hair that surrounds His head, and then all the ten avathars in the order in which they are mentioned in the Puranas; the Kalki avathar on horseback had the form or Baba Himself!” (Baba: Sathya Sai by Ra. Ganapati, p. 81)

Among guru-grovelling writers, few can exceed N. Kasturi or Ra. Ganapati, unless it be Smt. Vijayamma, who knew Sathya Sai as a teenager and has some most disturbing events about her guru to relate, amid some of the wildest worshipful hyperbole on record. More on her later…
