Sathya Sai Baba’s pet ‘dacoit’ – a violent, bribe-demanding gatekeeper

The one-time dacoit, Kumar, was reported by Prof. N. Kasturi in the official biography as having been fetched from a group of bandits whom Baba surprised in the hills in his younger days and allowed to be a watchman at his ashram. He became the main gate watchman at Prashanthi until he was killed on ashram premises in early 1987.

Two differing accounts of his death have circulated. The most convincing one I got was a day or so after the event while at Prashanthi Nilayam. Devotee Alfred Brinnand told me, having got the details from his ashram contact, who I also met – a seriously handicapped man from Malaysia who was a long-term resident (in a ground floor apartment in West 4 block), both of whom spoke Hindi. They told that the watchman Kumar was a very primitive type who extorted bribes from poor Indians to let them enter the ashram, and was imperious and even used his stick to beat persons he could intimidate. (In fact, I had seen him myself some days earlier hitting Indian followers with a stick when they had stepped out of line during morning nagarsamkirtan).

Examples of Shiva priests

The Shiva priest approached him while sitting outside the accommodation office and pretended to want to apologise to him and make amends. He humbly asked to take padnamaskaar of Kumar where he sat on the bench. When he put his mouth to Kumar’s feet, however, he bit his big toe clean off, having filed, sharpened, pointed teeth as some Shiva priests have to bite the heads of cockerels etc. Superstition about Shiva priests who live in graveyards or at burning grounds is very intense among ill-educated Indians – and even among some educated ones too.  It was said that Kumar was flatly refused entry to the small Sai hospital and died, allegedly of shock, within three days in Bangalore.

The other account by V. Ramnath of the Indian Administrative Service he hard heard at third- or forth-hand was told me by him in 1996.  Ramnath said that Kumar was killed by Sai Baba’s former favourite cook – a long-term worker in the Prashanthi Nilayam Indian canteen who was a strongly anti-Muslim Hindu. (I knew who he was and once heard him shouting insults about Islam as if he was near beserk). The killing of Kumar in this version was supposedly done in self-defense, because Kumar had threatened him and later assaulted him in the grounds of Baba’s parents’ so-called ‘Samadhi’ shrine in Puttaparthi just beyond the ashram itself. Kumar was allegedly knifed to death with a large kitchen knife either then or later on.

Sathya Sai Baba’s ‘blessing’ for ‘repentance’ – perverting the course of justice, as usual:
In both reports, however, the guilty party was said to have gone straight to Sathya Sai Baba to beg forgiveness. Which he was granted. The killer (whether a Shivite or the cook?) was given money (by whom is unclear) and told to leave the ashram and to stay in some village until further notice. The person later returned to the ashram as usual. No one was arrested or charged with the killing. Which account is true, or whether both incidents occurred (perhaps in sequence), is not known to me. But Kumar did disappear suddenly.

Subsequently, when Kumar’s room in the small watchman building (a square concrete blockhouse) once found just inside the gopuram gate was cleared, 50,000 rupees in small denominations were found behind the picture of Baba, Brinnand said. This money had been extorted from visitors to the ashram, mostly poor Indians. Kumar’s use of his stick on defenseless visitors and also on beggars etc. and had become a general tyrant, having made a lot of enemies within the ashram and outside. He once locked up an American girl in his room for a long period, but had to release her eventually.

The temporary head of the ashram at that time in February 1987 (Chiranjia Rao – deputising for Kutumba Rao) carried out regular surveillance of persons who mixed too freely with certain talkative residents, and were especially vigilant in suppressing such contacts after the brutal Kumar’s murder.

The Avatar’s ignorance and powerlessness?
After this discovery, Alfred Brinnand told me that Sai Baba was visibly furious with the then head of ashram (Kutumb Rao) and his assistant (Chiranjia Rao) when they approached him on the verandah, and he said the reason was that they had not discovered Kumar’s crimes. Strange indeed, however, when the self-trumpeted Omnipotent, Omniscient Sathya Sai Baba has himself appointed this violent crook to guard his gate for him!

There are many devotees – the well-deluded true believers without conscience -who will think something like this: “Swami let this man carry on as a lesson to those who he maltreated, they must have deserved it. It was their karma. Besides, Swami’s ways are inscrutable and who am I to question him?”

This indicates something about how dangerous this secretive and unaccountable personality cult is: it deranges minds and perverts truth and justice.

IAS official and Sai devotee V. Ramnath libels Robert Priddy

Mr. V. Ramnath, Indian Administrative Service

Mr. V. Ramnath, Indian Administrative Service

In an infamous recent posting on a Yahoo sathyasaibaba group web discussion board, the Indian official Mr. V. Ramnath attacks me – the real reason being that I have rejected his Lord and Master as a deceiver and abuser of faith and more besides.
See the web page in which I rebut his posting point by point

Since my web page was posted, a comment submitted to the ExBaba.com Guestbook on November 09, 2005 was unearthed. It evidently came from the same Mr. V. Ramnath at IP: 61.2.183.151) which is at Imphal, Manipur, India (where he has been posted by the IAS at least twice).
However, the posting was saved in a file kept for libels, smears, and semi-literate comments – and therefore  was not posted of ExBaba’s Guestbook by the administrator, R. Van der Sandt. I now have a copy, which I recognise was evidently intended for myself, though I was not named. This comment bears witness to the incoherent, intensely superstitious and ill-informed pseudo-religious mind of Mr. Ramnath (and note his reference to “ignorant snorting pigs”), as follows:-

how can you be so ungrateful to your Guru and to yourGod? Nobody asked you to go to Baba. You went to him on your own.If he taught you that God is Love you should thank him for guiding you.You should learn to grow up and move on and be a Guru to other lost souls. There is so much suffering on Earth already and indeed so much more is to come due to past Karmas that it amazes me that you in the West continue to think act and judge others by your current double standards.Shame on you for your ingratitude! Shame on for filing all those false affidavits and at whose behest and for how many dollars? In your judgements on Baba you reveal yourself…….most of all your profound ignorance of the very difficult spiritual path to God.In Tantra it is an accepted article of beleif that as one nears the Divine one is attacked by Maya at its most ferocious,ie by Greed and Lust. One sees this happening around Baba all the time. This is why Baba has warned his devotees to go slow and keep a distance as life is a long journey. But western man is in a tearing hurry. He is Earths greatest consumer and wants Moksha as fast as his Nescafe. We live, besides in Kaliyuga ,the darkest of all Dark Ages for the spiritualists and a Golden Age for the Materialists. This Age is governed by the Guna, quality, Tamas. The Goddesses of Kaliyuga is the fearsome but beneign KALI who is really a kind and loving Mother Goddess. The spiritual path ,thus ,in Kaliyuga is governed by KALI, by TAMAS and by MAYA.You and I dear belovd bloody fools and ignorant snorting pigs are caught in this maze.So wake up and behave with some maturity. How long will you cling to the apron strings of your Guru for recognition?Work hard for those in real distress and all else will follow.

V.Ramnath

My comments: Ramnath makes untrue assumptions: I was actually invited by Sathya Sai Baba to go to India several times – including the first time, and – as the Coordinator of the Sathya Sai Organization – to attend his EHV course in 1987 and come to his 70th Birthday too. He accuses me of filing the affidavits (on sexual abuse by Sathya Sai Baba) – but I never filed a single one! Note also how he shows he believes in primitive Tantra (as I have already reported on my web page) and holds absurd ideas about ‘the path to God’ (incidentally, he is far more ignorant of Indian scripture than I, as weeks of discussion with him showed. He didn’t even know his own name stands for ‘Lord Ram’!!)

He believes I am clinging to the apron strings of Sathya Sai Baba for personal recognition – but he knows nothing of acting from conscience, as I do to warn people of the deceptions and abuses of his guru. He presumes to advise me to work hard for those in distress (and promises me I will get the spiritual fruits!!) … I have done much service in the Sathya Sai Organization for 18 years. However, my wife and I could not discover from weeks of discussion that he had ever done a stroke of work for Sathya Sai Baba (unless you consider singing bhajans out of tune to be work). It would not be surprising if readers should conclude that he is a hypocrite and a “brown sahib” hater of the West. He exhibits here many of the mental traits of prominent Indian devotees of Sathya Sai Baba… though there were – and perhaps still are – honourable exceptions.

Among other information was commonly known in India, according to Ramnath who was then working as an IAS Vigilance Officer at the construction firm B.E.M.L. in Bangalore, the person chosen by Sai Baba as Coordinator on behalf of the Sathya Sai Trust for the Water Project, Mr. K. Chakravarthi, had previously been sacked by the government due to embezzlement of large sums of money! Mr. Ramnath had almost nothing good to say about ANY of the ashram officials or Sai Baba’s servitors – on the contrary, he characterised Prashanthi Nilayam as “a snake pit of envy”.

A quotation relevant to Mr. Ramnath’s belief system: “The power of superstition is a very great power indeed” Hercule Poirot
