Does Sathya Sai Baba pass the only test of a guru? He has stated: “The only test anyone can apply to a guru, of whatever kind, is whether his words are in harmony with his deeds. Gurus are to be judged by how words are put in practice.”(Sathya Sai Baba in Conversations with Sri Sathya Sai Baba by J. Hislop, p.22 old ed., p. 18 new ed.)
The answer is ‘No, no and no again’. On occasions too numerous to list, Sai Baba has acted against his words and promises. For a start, in the famous Xmas discourse of 2000, he claimed: “When I am defamed, I never get incensed, for it is only the tree full of edible fruits that is attached by sticks and stones.” (Sathya Sai Speaks Vol. 4 p. 184). This is therefore demonstrably wrong. He lashed out at his critics as Judases who take money to defame him, as demons and so forth. Sai Baba once ignored his critics – as long as they tended to fade away – but since the profuse world-wide the allegations of child molestation and homosexual intrusions have stuck to him indelibly along with powerful evidence that he was complicit in the 1993 murders incident and its cover-up, he was roused and raised his voice angrily while thumping his lectern in the infamous Xmas discourse. He lashed out at his critics as Judases who take money to defame him, and in later discourses called them demons without a spark of divinity in them (even though he has mostly proclaimed that everything in existence contains the spark of divinity).
An oft-repeated claim by Sathya Sai Baba, parroted by devotees, is that many kinds of unfair and undocumented accusations have been levelled against him through the years, both by sceptics and followers who are dissatisfied or disappointed by unfulfilled expectations as to Sai Baba’s attention etc. This is based on Sai Baba’s own pronouncements about how unfairly all good people have always been treated by their jealous contemporaries, and that he will be no exception himself. His defensiveness towards all who may leave him is seen in Sanathana Sarathi (11-92, p. 261), “The minds of the so-called devotees are turned in the wrong direction. If their desires are fulfilled, they praise Me. But, once a desire is not realised they go to the extent of even reviling me. Even while they are attempting to understand Me, they harbour doubts from head to foot. Some even leave me, when their worldly desires are not fulfilled.” But it is because of his reported fulfillment of his sexual ‘worldly desires’ that they left him!
Early on, knowing that his luck would most likely not hold and his activities would come to light, Sathya Sai Baba took the sly precaution of warning some devotees that he will have to separate “the grain from the chaff”, as if it were his own plan that devotees who cease to believe or accept him were first rejected by him! Why would this self-proclaimed “compassionate avatar” wish to do that? Those former follower who speak out against his deceptions and break of faith are called ‘disgruntled’ (this is accepted Prashanthi-speak), when in reality they are disgusted by him! He claims they did not get what they wanted from him – too right, they wanted truth, decency and that he should live up to his word, at least. They did not get it.
The worldly propensities 0f Sathya Sai Baba which he has most evidently been unable to overcome were told about to various persons by one of his earliest and closest followers who shared his bedroom for several of his post-pubescent years (the pair of them were known locally as ‘Radha and Krishna’, according to one of his earliest devotees, Vijaya Kumari [Vijayamma], and it would moreover be hugely naïve to believe that he never had sexual stirrings in the normal way. Sai Baba once stated in a discourse that the sexual instinct is the hardest of all tendencies for humans to overcome. That homosexual relations with minors are evidently quite widespread and tacitly accepted in much of India – though they are against Indian law – are not openly accepted in Indian society, so guilt and the need to cover up must also be equally widespread. A major research project by the Indian Government with UNICEF and Save The Children found that 53% of all Indians were sexually abused as children, with a preponderance of boys over girls! (See here)
Sai Baba tries to avert criticism for his well-known and often seen expressions of intense angry by claiming that, though he may appear to be angry or show human emotions, he is actually wholly unmoved by everything! So he could easily stand by and hear the cold-blooded execution by rifle-fire of four of his long-serving devotees without any emotion and that he simulates anger only to correct straying followers! How convenient for him, but not so convenient for everyone! He can rage like a mad lion (as experienced by Prof. Kasturi and described by other devotees). He intimidates his students in various ways (and sometimes their teachers too, as I saw him do in public in 1987 at a college discourse in Prashanthi Nilayam). This Janus-faced deception is not evident to those whose minds are entrapped by his indoctrination and who have sunk their social prestige and large parts of their lives and fortunes in his interests… but it amounts to calculated hypocrisy and deceit.
