Sathya Sai Baba has claimed that “all healing comes from God” and insists that the only sure and secure route to health is by leading a pure life, worshipping God, avoiding sin and a host of other fundamentalist injunctions… yet he had to get his devotees to build and endorse worldly hospitals. To see the self-designated God Creator of the Universe inspecting giant model teeth while they open and shut rather brings it all down very much to earth.

This hospital, donated with all its inventory by former Hard Rock Café owner, Isaac Tigrett, is controversial because all its criteria for admission – and admission lists – are kept secret. It is know that devotees from around the world and in India are given (mostly) free treatment there, though it is claimed that it was built to serve the poor.

Strangely, the hospital always looks almost deserted from outside – where armed military guards stand, while other health facilities in India are thronged by people seeking treatment. His hospitals are private hospitals, not open to public inspection nor any breakdown of accounts or reports on the minutes and decisions made.
