Indian commentators, such as the presenter at IBN are finally asking why it is that so many Indian gurus have been convicted of adharmic (i.e. unrighteous) activities. The latest scandal, whatever the eventual outcome, has brought forth more allegations of Nityananda abusing women sexually, of murder attempts and an unexplained death at his ashram.
For example, One India reported this (see on right): Had not the Nityananda sex video caused a major uproar across the internet, the Indian news media would most probably have played down or ignored the matter, for this is what the Indian news media have done for years now in the case of the influential and powerful Sathya Sai Baba, for – with very few honourable exceptions – they no longer take any notice of continuing and fresh allegations of Sai Baba’s sexual molestation of young men and boys.
Human rights violations from sex, rape, pedophilia, murder to financial scams are increasingly reported alleged in connection with Indian swamis and/or so-called ‘godmen’. Bupendra Chowbey on IBN Live.in.com hosts a discussion on these issues in a 4-part video on ‘Sex, sleaze and swamis’. He said: “The fundamental question is why has there been such a huge increase in cases related to the holy men in our country.”
He compares aspects of the Nityananda case with those of Chandra Swami, Sathya Sai Baba, Pilot Baba, and other religious leaders and asks if blind faith in religion is the reason for godmen becoming conmen and whether the sexploits of swamis have permanently damaged the image of holy men in India. While reactions to the revelations about Nityananda led to physical damage to his ashram, the debaters were loath to blame religion as such but rather the gullibility of people who do not think for themselves.
Coming on the heels of the N.D. Tiwari sex scandal [who Sathya Sai Baba endorsed], the Nityananda revelations have further engaged Indian journalists into thinking what is wrong with gurus, even with Hinduism and religion itself (see Star Of Mysore article)
Self-declared ‘spiritual masters’ claiming they lead people to bliss and realization, can do miracles, healings and much else prove to be in many cases in recent decades to have been involved variously in sexual abuse, pedophilia, murder – not to mention fraud on a mega scale. Some of the more notable include Swami Premananda (Tiruvannamalai), Bhagwan Rajneesh (Osho), Swami Muktananda, Swami Rama, Swami Rameshwaranand Giriji Maharaj, Gyatri Swami, Balayogi Premvarni, Gowrishankara Swami, Swami Shyam, The Phalgat (of Kerala), Swami Bhimanand… the list could actually be extended into the scores. None are so widely and credibly accused of pedophilia, male sex abuses, involvement in murders, fraud and political cover-up than Sathya Sai Baba (see here)
