Swami Paramahamsa Nithyananda – alias Rajasekaran, a native of Tiruvannamalai was caught on video in compromising situations with Tamil  actress Ranjitha and another woman. Serious complaints to the police were lodged by various persons, including Kannada actor Praveen and his ‘second-in-command; Lenin. Since then he has withdrawn into indeterminate spiritual seclusion’ and his main ashram has ceased to function. This case pales by comparison with those of Pope Benedict or Sathya Sai Baba, but it has awakened more Indian media suspicion of Indian gurus than any comparable event. So much so that a film ‘God and Sex’ on Nityananda’s life is to be made by director Ram Gopal Varma.

Zeenews.com reported (23-3-2010): “Tamil Nadu police who had registered cases under various sections, including rape, against Nityananda, transferred them to the police in Ramanagar, as the Ashram falls under it.” The Times of India reported that: “There will be no stay on investigation. Let me go through those papers,” the judge observed when the counsel for the petitioner pleaded for interim order of stay on the proceedings apprehending arrest following the filing of the FIR.”

Kamini Jaiswal, a senior Supreme Court lawyer , who has fought a case against Sathya Sai Baba (see here), blames blind followers for such incidents. “It is shocking to see that well educated people are followers of such godmen,” she said. (Source CNN-IBN)

Swami Nithyananda is notable for the degree of pathetic denial and self-contradictory ‘explanations’, for example:-

“Swamiji has said that the video is a morphed one and blames one of his inmates Premananda alias Lenin Karuppan, for the morphing of his face with the idea of defaming him. It is said that Swamiji tried to stop the airing of the video footage but a civil court did not grant any stay.” (Source)
