Will Saience ever replace science?

Posted by robertpriddy on November 26, 2010

Sathya Sai Baba calls his doctrines ‘saience’, most likely a semi-pun invented for him by Prof. N. Kasturi. This is supposed to be the true doctrine of the creation and wonders of the universe, contrary to natural science and all the knowledge that has come from anything other than Indian or other scriptural sources.  Such frivolous wordplay will never alter the fact that science is a globe-spanning undertaking supported by virtually every government in the world and with millions of researchers employed in advancing it, while Sai Baba’s peculiar Hindu doctrine is known in any detail to a relative handful of people. Though all his followers have a smattering of it, hardly any have studied it in any depth (as I have done) and none critically so, let alone practice it nearly as fully as he says is essential (which leads to a totally unworldly dissociation from the world and reality).

Sathya Sai Baba on Hiranyakasipu's impossible feats! Can the fantastic, unsupported claims by Sai Baba about ancient Indian ‘science’, as represented by the scan inset here – but one small example – be taken seriously? Sai Baba puts science down as only an uneducated ignoramus about human knowledge and achievements could do. Today, the combined efforts of the world’s most advanced physicists – standing on the shoulders of centuries of scientific physical research – have recreated at CERN in Switzerland the conditions a millionth of a second after the Big Bang (13.7 billion years ago), producing – if fleetingly indeed – temperatures of over 10 trillion degrees, a million times hotter than the centre of the sun! Sai Baba holds that one man, the mythical Hiranyakasipu, knew more than all scientists know today! Absurdity beyond all degrees… just showing what an uneducated charlatan and fantasizer this self-proclaimed ‘omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent’ God Incarnate truly is. Even the pro-Sai Baba newspaper, The Hindu, stated that the results of the Big Hadron Collider recently, made up the biggest scientific experiment of all time, the recreation of Big Bang.” Still, typically inaccurate journalism: the recreation was not another Big Bang, but an infinitesimally small-scale creation of conditions some millionths of a second after the Big Bang. It has been shown indisputably in several analyses of his discourses how science-challenged Sai Baba is, how he almost never has a good word for science or scientists, or any genuine kind of scholar. He mocks and makes fun of them all repeatedly.  This strongly suggests that he is envious of those with an education and realises how far short his various ‘blessings’ (not to mention fraudulent trickery) fall so far short of even moderate scientific achievements? He thinks ancient Indian ‘knowledge’ (mostly superstition or highly speculative) is far superior in every respect to the amazing advances in modern knowledge into the nature of of matter, nature, the body, mind etc. – all facts unknown to all Indian sages and scriptures. Traditional Indian medicine, which he praises so much, is full of absurd remedies and is largely powerless to cure thousands of ailments that the ‘sages’ could not even identify.

Like Hiranyakasipu, he relates how Ravana was ‘demonic’ due to lack of control of senses and lusts, though both had “mastered all the sciences“, could fly through the power of reciting mantras, and had travelled to the moon and to the limits of the universe beyond all the stars! Yet Sathya Sai Baba claims that his doctrine will conquer the entire world and make everyone like a ‘Bharatiya’ (i.e. a traditional Indian of ages long past):- “Very soon, the entire world will be united. In fact, after 28 years, the world itself will become “Bharat”. Everyone will call themself a Bharatiya (one imbued with godliness — Bhagavat rathas). No one will refer to themself as belonging to this state or that state, this region or that region.” (from Sathya Sai Baba’s Convocation Discourse 22-11-2008 at http://www.sathyasai.org/discour/2008/d081122.html) Yet more astonishingly, Sathya Sai Baba has told that between 2020 and 2030 the whole India would be Hindu, according to the VHP leader, Singhal who reported being told that by him in person!”

  1. Yes, that quote you gave there is a good exposition of his view on the subject.
Just to be clear, I am not saying that predation does not exist, or that competition does not exist: what I am saying is that cooperation is the main factor by which evolution works.

  2. I’m not sure that Kropotkin’s thesis – if indeed it really puts the goal of cooperation as a higher drive than survival of the species – can be correct in that. I agree with him in the following quotation, however: “In the animal world we have seen that the vast majority of species live in societies, and that they find in association the best arms for the struggle for life: understood, of course, in its wide Darwinian sense – not as a struggle for the sheer means of existence, but as a struggle against all natural conditions unfavourable to the species. The animal species, in which individual struggle has been reduced to its narrowest limits, and the practice of mutual aid has attained the greatest development, are invariably the most numerous, the most prosperous, and the most open to further progress. The mutual protection which is obtained in this case, the possibility of attaining old age and of accumulating experience, the higher intellectual development, and the further growth of sociable habits, secure the maintenance of the species, its extension, and its further progressive evolution. The unsociable species, on the contrary, are doomed to decay.”

    – Peter Kropotkin, Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution (1902), Conclusion.

The urge to be is surely the fundamental internal fact of existence, as witnessed in human species making life its central value, and death to be avoided as long as possible. The sex drive is secondary to this, but supports it. The tertiary drives, to know and to be happy are also instrumental to survival. All this means to survive. I do not hold that nature is only red in tooth and claw… but this fact has been observed through all history and biology, and it does not detract from the tendency to herd together for survival and higher levels of cooperation.

  3. I note that in some of these articles, you talk about nature being red of tooth and claw. I would like you to read Mutual Aid by Piotr Kropotkin, where he laid out the scientific case for cooperation being the main drive of evolution, not competition. In my opinion, his conclusion is ironclad, although one may of course argue about the relative importance of each factor.

This is not to say that I agree with Sai Baba’s “reflection” thesis, which I find absurd and unethical to the nth degree.
