Sathya Sai Baba’s false claims about cancer, healing

A former devotee of Sai Baba replied to a posting by Andries Krugers Dagneaux about a case of alleged healing from cancer by a lady Danish devotee whose cancer diagnosis was changed after a visit to Sai Baba where she experienced a flow of water from her nose when he went past her.

Much has been made of Sathya Sai Baba’s alleged cures of cancer. There is, of course, no scientific evidence presented by any of the claimants that such cures were effected by him. There is plenty of evidence of cases where he was unable to cure cancer. He would say ‘Cancer cancelled’ to sufferers in interviews. The wife in a family in our Oslo centre had breast cancer and prayed continuously to Sai Baba for help over several years. Sometimes she thought it was receding, but eventually she was convinced to have chemotherapy. It did not help. I was given packets of vibuthi by Sai Baba at an interview in 1994 for ‘the patient’ (obviously that lady as this was foremost in our minds at that interview). The lady, Mrs. F. Fotland, ate all the vibuti and then firmly refused an operation, which her specialist said was her last chance. She died not long afterwards.

As has been written of his false promises of healing cancer “It is one thing for a person to decide without prompting or encouragement to cease taking medical care. But for Sanathana Sarathi, a Sai Baba official journal, to give institutional sanction to the idea that the proper treatment of cancer is to abandon doctors in favour of whatever Sai Baba says, is cause for serious concern. This concern is further deepened by Sai Baba’s continued ignorance on the subject of cancer. The plain fact is that vast numbers of cancers are thoroughly curable by routine medical procedures.”

 Sai Baba’s incomprehensible medical advice is readily documented, for instance, in the following quotation:

“Baba then launched into a detailed diagnosis of my physical problems which Dr. Bhagavantam translated from Telugu into English. Baba spoke very fast and used complex medical terms which neither of us was able to comprehend and which I would not have been able to spell even if I had tried to take notes…” (Krystal, ibid., p. 37)

Further, in ‘The Findings‘ by the former very close devotee David Bailey wrote: “I have not seen him do a genuine healing on anybody in all my time of being close to him, and having had innumerable interviews. I have seen him tell people to stand up, and get out of wheel chairs, but the effect is not lasting. He generally ignores the sick and frail ones, giving out as reason, their karma.“ See much more on failed Sai Baba healing here.

Anti-Christian Sai Baba followers’ false comments

Comments and mails from Sai Baba devotees are still received regularly by exposé sites, and they are invariably incorrect. The Hindus who are strongly anti-Christian are prominent among them… but only seldom are their comments allowed (as either abusive or too distractingly ignorant). Here is one of his comments, with my reply:-

That is not true. There are no Christian media of any note known to me that accused Sathya Sai Baba of violence and use of goondas. All the reports of Sathya Sai Baba having used goondas come from Indian sources, especially Basava Premanand (the famous skeptic honoured by the Government for encouraging the scientific spirit). He investigated numerous murders by Sai Baba agents – see also Murders in Prashanti Nilayam before the 06-06-1993 assassinations There were also attempts on Premanand’s life by goondas and his home was burgled and files stolen on several occasions. Who else by Sai Baba goondas? Another Indian witness that Sai Baba goondas attacked him was Dr. Naresh Bhatia, who had just previously challenged Sai Baba over the anal rape of a 14-year-old student who he had examined medically and sent to hospital in Bangalore. Bhatia had to flee permanently because of those attacks (see here).  The most damning evidence came from a senior Indian  ex-CID Officer, Janaki V. Ram,  who had received the President’s Police Medal for having solved many difficult cases recorded his findings after much investigation of Sathya Sai Baba. Sai Baba: ‘Calumny’ Confirmed

Though Sathya Sai Baba is no longer with us, it is still important to document and publicize the facts of the matter, not least for the sake of those who may be deluded into the cult by believing the denials by him and his minions of his continual sexual abuses – not least on the grounds they give that he was never convicted of any. The fact that he was protected by his devotees at the highest level of government and the Supreme Court of India explains why he was never brought to justice (he never left India after 1968 either, for he would have been liable to prosecution in other countries. Here is a telling statement by one of the foremost and most articulate early exposé activists:-

Like so many others I became a devotee of Sathya Sai Baba (SSB) after reading Samuel Sandweiss’ book ‘The Holy Man… and the Psychiatrist’.  In the two years preceding my disillusionment with SSB, I was an ardent devotee, daily fostering my devotion and was the seva (charity) coordinator of my local group. I can’t believe that even one of them lied about his experiences.In none of these cases SSB asked permission or gave an explanation for his behavior.  None of the persons mentioned hereunder can be contacted via me, but I give my word of honor that this is the truth as conveyed they me.One of those three cases was Edwin R. whose story is already on the internet. Another friend told me that he noticed that SSB changed into a woman i.e. SSB’s penis suddenly disappeared when my friend touched SSB in the groin. Of course his strange ‘sex-change’ testimony made me wonder.

In the third case SSB rubbed the penis of a friend in a way that nobody could see it. He also received an oiling just above his penis and SSB told him not to tell the others. He had gone to the ashram with very serious personal and spiritual problems and expected to get some help. In stead they only grew worse after staying in the ashram and his interview with SSB. SSB gave him a ring that he didn’t want and said ‘3 very good diamonds’ about a ring that SSB had given to him. When my friend eventually had the ring tested by a Dutch jeweller they turned out not to be diamonds.

Some time before I had heard these stories and before the ‘calumny’ on the internet I had already glanced over A. Nagel’s 1994 article ‘Sai Paradox’ (See Sai Baba Paradox – only available in Dutch) that was available in the nearest public library. When the ‘calumny’ about SSB started I didn’t have the courage to read the information on the internet. However I re-read the article and was amazed to read another testimony about the sex change of SSB. In that article the author also wrote that Keith Ord and Tal Brooke had been inappropriately sexually approached by SSB. It was clear that the author believed K. Ord’s testimony and not SSB’s denial in spite of the lack of proof. Because of the sex-change story and because it was a balanced article about SSB and his movement I slowly started to find K. Ord’s and T. Brooke’s testimonies believable.

Some time later I heard indirectly a serious case about sexual abuse by SSB from a very reliable source including graphic details of SSB’s behavior. Apart from everything that has already been written on the internet. Unfortunately I can’t disclose the source.

But even after hearing this shocking story which confirmed the ‘calumny’ I stayed a devotee for some months until May 2001. The main reason was that in the night following the confirmation I had a dream in which SSB gave me the perfect spiritual advice regarding my sadhana (spiritual exercises). And also, of course, because I had emotionally invested (both personal and social) so much in my faith in SSB so I struggled hard not to lose my faith in SSB. Besides I had no rational explanation for some of the miracle stories that I had heard from people I trusted. They remain a mystery for me.

The final blow was when I realized that SSB must have lied in the Christmas 2000 speech in which SSB said that people who attacked him had done so because they had been bribed. I could not imagine that sincere young men who paid a lot of money to see SSB and were just like me on a quest for Truth and God could be tempted to lie for money.

When I was a devotee I had fostered my trust in and devotion for SSB intensely, at the expense of other emotional attachments. This was a direct result of the SSB’s claims about himself and his teachings about sadhana (spiritual exercises). Naturally it was an extremely painful experience for me to lose faith in SSB in May 2001 and to disengage myself from the organization. I needed more than a year to recover from it.

Good for a laugh!

Having proclaimed he knew absolutely everything about everyone and everything, Sathya Sai Baba made some remarkable statements about scientists and science. Only what is noteworthy about them is the sheer ignorance and absurdity of the great majority of them! See examples in scan on the right.:- 

Firstly, he claimed that ancient figures of religious Indian mythology as having mastered “all the sciences”. (So they knew the whole of, say, nanoscience, neurology, evolution, every detail of microbiology incl. DNA and so on through hundreds of massive disciplines?).

Sai Baba spoke often about Ravana (from the Ramayana story, who supposedly abducted Sita from Rama) and Hiranyakasipu (described in the Puranas as having been killed by God in the avataric form of a boar!).   Since there exists absolutely no historical evidence to prove these figures even existed, devotees simply had to bow down humbly to his superior omniscience!

I am reminded of how shocked I was when my close friend and the editor of Sai Baba’s journal, V.K. Narasimhan, once remarked to me during a conversation that SSB is ignorant of science and picks up things he hears from people in interviews, then goes out and tells it to students on the veranda, sometimes even getting the facts he just heard distorted or completely wrong! Narasimhan even quoted from his excellent memory several examples for me. I rationalised this at the time in the way that all devotees rationalise many things that do not fit SSB ’s own propaganda by the usual old, “Swami is just pretending. He has some other reason for doing this which we cannot fathom”. How trusting can you get?

Here is a small selection from the huge spectrum of Sai Baba’s misunderstood science, false beliefs, moral-religious inventions:- 

“Today man is putting his senses to misuse and as a result his body is becoming weaker day by day. He shortens his life-span by his unsacred vision and by indulgence in sensual pleasures. Lakhs of light rays in his eyes are being destroyed because of his unsacred vision. That is the reason what man is developing eye defects.” (Sai Baba, discourse on 5/7/2001 Sanathana Sarathi, August 2001, p. 226)

Sai Baba is a pure clown where physics is concerned. His main propagandist , the former physics professor G. Venkataraman, never corrected the howling absurdities about physics or challenged him but fully believed him to be ‘the Creator of the Universe’ as well as the creator of evolution! 

Sai Baba: “There is Divinity in every atom. Another name for the atom is God. From the time he was born until he died, Kaanaada contemplated on the atom saying, “Paramanu, paramanu, paramanu (meaning, ‘the smallest particle’). ”This world could not be seen if the atom didn’t exist. ” Comment: The atom is not the smallest particle by far.

Sai Baba: “There is nothing else except atoms.” Comment: There are many more things than atoms, like neutrinos (some scientists think that they account for the majority of the mass of the universe), energy (photons, X rays, gamma rays, microwave radiation, light, etc), loose particles (electrons, protons, muons, etc), space-time, etc. (24/7/2002)

“At the centre (of the world), everything is liquid. Everything is melted. No temperature. Everything is liquid, like water. Gold, iron, silver all are liquid. Next there is solid. Then trees. Then human beings and animals. At the very centre is the divine. It is the support of everything. First is liquid, chemistry. Then solid, physics. Then trees, Botany. Then man, the pinnacle of life. But at the centre, supporting all, is the divine. Without the divine, where is chemistry, physics, botany? “As you can all see, this Linga is rather bigger in size. There is a meaning behind this. This is five Tolas in weight. [Note: one Tola is 11.66 grams. 5 Tolas = about 60.0 grams] Every human being possesses five Tolas of gold essence known as Hiranyagarbha… Gold represents energy in man and is the cause of his radiance. The gold content within each body is this size only. It is gold essence in the body that makes the eyes see, ears hear etc.” (Sanathana Sarathi – April 2002, p. 127)

Comment: However, the human body cannot possibly ever contain so much gold as 60 grams! Puttaparthi: Sai Baba property boom slump

Puttaparthi: The bottom has fallen out of the former Sai Baba property boom during the last year. Property prices rose enormously since the 1970s and land prices multiplied many times over. Investing in Puttaparthi property was always a big risk due not least the many untrustworthy land owners, agents and lawyers selling apartment on the river flood plain and swindling foreigners in many ways over property deals, not excluding the Sathya Sai ashram. The alarm bells about the utter dependency of property prices etc. on the presence in Prashanthi Nilayam of Sathya Sai Baba did not ring much until around 2007 when the Sathya Sai Central Trust to sell off the airport, without any luck whatever, warning thereby that it was a ‘white elephant’ on the property market. (Only a few flights per week and then only when Sai Baba was residing in Puttaparthi). The Sathya Sai Airport was donated by the government to Sathya Sai Baba through a high-level scam by the devotee Mr. M.K. Kaw (see here) who was the Secretary of Civil Aviation and who had been a devotee since the 1960s when Sai Baba’s car stopped beside him while he was standing in a road in Arunachala Pradesh.

B. Keshava of Drummoyne – a psychiatrist who believes anything whatever?

I am reliably informed that B. Keshava, an ethnic Indian psychiatrist in of 30 Marlborough St. , Drummoyne, NSW, 2047 Australia (who is a registered doctor) until recently at the least endorsed the Indian Swami Sathya Sai Baba… an Indian swami (deceased April 2012) who claimed he was entirely omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent (i.e. residing in the heart of every person on earth!).  Would you entrust yourself – your otherwise private concerns – to a person who accepts Sai Baba’s as a guru  who claimed throughout his life that he was God – the Deity of Deities and the Father (Baba) who sent Jesus to earth etc. etc.)? Most readers of this blogsite and my main website will find beyond the remotest possibility of doubt that Sathya Sai Baba was a major deceiver, performed ‘miracles’ by sleight of hand (recorded on various films even by the BBC and widely testified too) and was accused most credibly (including in sworn testimonies and affidavits) by a large number of young men of having abused them sexually (usually while in the unassailable privacy of his inner  interview room).

That a psychiatrist can have a photo of Sathya Sai Baba on his professional premises and thus hold such distorted and head-in-the-sand beliefs in the face of overwhelming proofs of the falsity of the large majority of Sai Baba’s claims is a disgrace to his profession. It is especially notable since Sai Baba died around one decade before he had famously and repeatedly predicted (in published discourses etc.) than he would… not least having been hospitalized for many weeks and being on life support systems for multiple organ failures until his ‘minders’ decided time was in to disconnect his body and declare he died (Easter Sunday!). 

‘The Secret Swami’: A resumé for latecomers to the exposé

The BBC film ‘Secret Swami’, shown to an audience of millions in Britain on June 17th, 2004, was seen on BBC World in over 225 million homes in almost every country (bar USA). It is a gripping documentary masterpiece, rated pick of the week by all UK national newspapers. Since 2000, Sai Baba followers have had no excuse for not investigating the truth about him. In 2003 Denmark’s national TV sent a documentary ‘Seduced by Sai Baba‘, seen by millions in Denmark, Norway and Australia, with testimonies on his sexual abuses. Top Sai Baba leaders in Denmark and Australia made unavailing threats of legal action in attempts to stop the airing.

Taking this matter further, BBC’s 1 hour film ‘The Secret Swami’ confined itself to four areas: 1) his alleged ‘materialisation miracles’. 1) accusations through many years of Sai Baba’s sexual molestation of young males. 2) his complicity in police executions in his private quarters on June 6, 1993. 4) Cover-ups by him and the leadership of his worldwide organization, and by successive Indian governments, of major criminal allegations. 

The film is most credible, revealing the many experiences with Sai Baba of a former long-term devotee family whose lives were ruined for many years by Sai Baba’s most despicable and threatening pedophile sexual abuse of their son (Alaya Rahm). One must see this to understand the authenticity of the accounts of this family and another ex-devotee who was pressured into oral sex in 1976 by this most unlikely ‘God Incarnate’. Even so, the BBC could only show a tiny fraction of their 80 hours of film footage with many persons, reportedly including other sexually abused young men and boys. This is the clear message left in the minds of sensible viewers who have not been indoctrinated with the insupportable avatar claims of perfection, purity and omnipotence.

It is remarkable how few devotees spoke out to defend Sai Baba from the many allegations of sexual abuse and the massive corroborative evidence available on the web. Sai Baba always insisted his devotees should ‘See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil’, which was the perfect way of stopping them from investigating the facts about him. Most evidently did not make even the most superficial inquiries for many years, though a considerable fall off of members in his organization began and increased in time, showing that many grew convinced of their truth.

From 2004 onwards, Sai Baba gave far fewer interviews to followers, eventually deteriorating visibly until his 85th birthday celebration where he was wooden in appearance and movement, it since having been revealed that he was being drugged alternatively with sleeping pills and stimulants until his hospitalization and ignominious death in April 2011.

FAKING OF LINGAM ‘MATERIALIZATION’ FULLY EXPOSED

Sai Baba was filmed faking the ‘birth of a lingam’ (egg-like spheroid made of gold) from his stomach through his mouth. The clear BBC film showed that he only vomited water, and the lingam was held in a towel. He was evidently so poorly that he did not even pretend to bring it out of his mouth this time, and collapsed on camera after the trial of his obvious faking under the close-up TV camera. After this, no shadow of doubt can remain in the minds of sensible people (i.e. if not infected with the Sai belief mania) that Sai Baba was a major deceiver. He was also a very, very rich and politically influential one too. Murders that took place in his bedroom in 1993 were also investigated in the documentary.

A FORMER HOME MINISTER OF AP SUPPORTED REINVESTIGATION

The former Home Minister of Andhra Pradesh, V.P.B. Nair,  made it clear that the murders in 1993 in Sai Baba’s bedroom (while he stood by) were cold-blooded. He stated that the police reports about the four intruders they executed were all sheer lies. He intended to support the reopening of the quashed case. By rights, Sai Baba should have been called as a witness, but he formerly managed to avoid it through a Government made up largely of devotees, who quashed the CBI investigation before it could publish its findings. Sathya Sai Baba was under major suspicion of being an accomplice to the fact and active in the ensuing cover up. This was documented in great detail by his chief accuser in India, the skeptic B. Premanand, who made this evident in an interview with BBC. Before he died in 2009, Premanand had survived attempts on his life, several severe beatings and three recent burglaries by Sai Baba followers. It is know that he has an extremely compromising photograph (and the negative) of Sai Baba engaged in oral sex with a student. Protection for the student was to be sought in the Supreme Court in case lodged with the High Court.Due to governmental and judicial cover-up agents at top level, no further legal process of any kind involving Sai Baba could be instigated a coming case.

DUPED INTO DENIAL, THE PROPAGANDIST Dr. M. GOLDSTEIN

The top leader of the world-wide Sai Organisation and close associate of Sai Baba, Dr. Michael Goldstein from California, told the BBC interviewer, “We believe that Sri Sathya Sai Baba is Jesus Christ. Sri Sathya Sai Baba is Buddha. Sri Sathya Sai Baba is the founder of all of the world’s religions. Sri Sathya Sai Baba has always been God.”

A hidden camera was later used to film him since the BBC team were by then aware that Goldstein presides over hidden agendas and an organisation which is wholly unaccountable to anyone and actively covers-up anything that could cast a shadow on him and illustrates how he covers up for Sai Baba, a ‘secret swami’ from the viewpoint all but his inside circle. Dr. Goldstein came across very badly indeed as going back on his word and as a most distasteful ranting and finger-stabbing person – another comical performance of his blinded and hypocritical faith!

HARD ROCK TIGRETT’S SOFTENED BRAIN 

Isaac Tigrett is a multi-millionaire businessman (founder of the ‘Hard Rock Café meatburger empire) who donated US$39 million to Sai Baba in the 1990s for the hi-tech hospital near the ashram in Puttaparthi, South India. (But $19 million just disappeared’!) He performed on the BBC film as an egocentric fanatic, laughing quite out-of-place in a manic way and admitting firmly that he believes the sex abuse allegations are true and it makes no difference whatever to his faith! He stated, amazingly, that Sai Baba could go out and murder someone tomorrow without it affecting his faith! This seems to be how the “human values” which Sai Baba and his huge machinery propaganda to teach it turns out to be in practice. Tigrett Everyone with any conscience and decency who sees this must surely recoil in revulsion?

A SUPER-ARROGANT INDIAN MINISTER EXPOSED HIMSELF

The Indian ex-Minister of Human Resources and former Minister of Education, the Sai devotee Murali Manohar Joshi (who arranged for the Indian Government to finance Hindu astrology!), had agreed to a BBC interview. He had evidently not expected to be put any tough questions! His reaction was that of an arrogant and ignorant bully behaving as the threatening big shot he is towards the BBC’s young lady interviewer…. a great ‘example’ of what is behind the fronts of most Sai officials and leaders when questioned.

THE SAI MOVEMENT’S UNDERSIDE EXPOSED FOR WHAT IT REALLY IS

This the most hard-hitting, engaging and personalized study gets right behind the thick smoke-screen of secrecy and security… it would convince anyone (who has no investments or attachments to lose)! Sai Baba looks ghastly in many clips – we now realize him to be a sick and lying cheat seen with great and indisputable close-up clarity on the BBC film of the lingam scam!

Those young men with the courage to speak out about being sexually abused were constantly maligned on the Internet by various Sai followers (there are dozens of instances of this heartlessness to be found). Those who questioned Sai Baba as an omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent Godhead of perfect purity were thrown out of the Organisation without even a letter or phone call! From being a largely unquestioned guru movement, the Sai communities retracted into a narrowing and ever more secretive and censorious cult, yet one with such political and financial power in India that it was protected at the highest levels of society from any public investigation or legal proceedings. This changed after April 2011, when a huge fall from acceptance followed on his premature and closely guarded death, then with the the discoveries of huge hoarded treasures hidden in his very secure palatial apartment, even under his 5 by 5 meter bed, and subsequent police actions which caught out the Sai Trust while siphoning away large funds from the treasure trove.

Isaac Tigrett’s lunatic fringe projects and claims are entertaining, if nothing more

Please note the latest preposterous claims by Tigrett from June 2014 about Sai Baba holding discourses in a ‘subtle body’ in Kodaikanal!

The one-time multi-millionaire Isaac Tigrett famously condoned and endorsed Sathya Sai Baba as a sexual abuser (see BBC transcript below). After the guru’s death – Tigrett proclaimed himself to have been entrusted by him as his “living will”! Tigrett’s following is overwhelmingly in the USA, his claims having been ignored outright by the Sathya Sai Organisation in India and elsewhere. His other claims are certainly no less bizarre, such as the crystal skull farce.

After he sold off his Hard Rock Café chain, Isaac Tigrett  has built a solid reputation as one of the craziest claimants for spiritual occultism and weird projects:-

Tigrett also confounded all the massive propaganda about the hundreds of millions of followers spread through decades by Sathya Sai Baba officialdom, stating there are but seven million:-

Sathya Sai Baba has virtually disappeared from all Indian media since the furore after his funeral when his miserly hoard of immense value was found and the Sai Trust were caught by police siphoning huge amount of the money in a van etc. Now, too, the poll on IBN LIVE T.V. to choose the Greatest Indian since Mahatma Gandhi has 100 nominations for that honour. Sathya Sai baba is NOT even nominated!
