Round houses at Prashanthi Nilayam in the late 1980s – once very lucrative

More information has leaked out from Prashanthi Nilayam. In the 1980s six circular apartment buildings known as ’roundhouses’ were erected, and they were much sought after by well-to-do foreign Sai-VIPs and residents. Now they are all but empty with an average of only three of four persons living in them. The ashram’s income from all those rooms has clearly dropped drastically. There are so-called ‘owners’ who donated rooms, who actually never owned them  in any legal sense but were allowed to stay there ‘permanently’ – if not ejected for some reason. There are also many donors, who paid exorbitant sums ( fixed at $10,000 in the mid-90s) to have the right to stay in such rooms when they visited, with a visiting limit of around one month per annum, later sometimes reduced to 2 weeks, depending on the whims or needs of the accommodation office officials. All these have recently had to pay the increased daily rent that was levied on all non-donating visitors. So they are being surcharged, which no doubt means that those remaining few who consider a visit worthwhile are even less likely to want to.

The prices levied on foreign visitors who wanted to be a room-donor, or a room-owner during the heyday were fixed way, way above the costs of building these blocks. No donor had any rights or claim on the property, could not sell them as they belong to the ashram. The Sai Baba set-up relentlessly milked all those who were deceived into believing that the ashrams were an oasis amid a desert of total corruption. Added to that were the countless foreigner who bought apartments outside the ashram, few of whom could regain their investment of the sold due to punishing Indian regulations on export of capital from India that could not be proven to have been brought in originally. Many apartment blocks in Puttaparthi are built on a flood plain, many were ill-constructed and subject to subsidence and numerous other problems. No wonder Sai Baba was so popular among Puttaparthi land owners and speculators who flocked there, not least his younger brother, Janakiramiah (the infamous blackmailer) who became a multi-millionaire “beyond his wildest dreams” (asV.K. Narasimhan told me).
