Narayan Sai case latest news – updated Jan. 2, 2014

Posted by robertpriddy on December 31, 2013

January 2, 2014Surat: Self-styled godman Asaram Bapu’s son Narayan Sai’s judicial custody in the Surat rape case has been extended till January 10. His father, Asaram Bapu, is currently lodged in a Jodhpur jail after he was arrested in September for alleged sexual assault of a minor girl at his ashram.

On December 13th, aides of Narayan Sai were detained for trying to bribe police; Rs 5 crore (i.e. over US$ 800,000.-) was seized.

A sub-inspector and five aides of self-styled godman Asaram’s son Narayan Sai allegedly tried to bribe the police and other officials in a bid to weaken the sexual assault case against him. Investigations continue as both self-proclaimed ‘godmen’ remain behind bars.

Prashanthi Nilayam owners of ashram apartments beware!

Always on the look-out for ways and means of extorting money from visitors and devotees, the Sathya Sai Central Trust is now forcing through a takeover of all properties of so-called ‘owners’ of the small, tawdry, unfurnished but very expensive apartments at Sai Baba ashrams. It is literally FORCING those who own rooms in the ashrams to come there in PERSON, otherwise they lose their rights to the room FOREVER – even though they paid many thousands of dollars for a guaranteed, life-time room! They are NOT allowed to pay via any method electronically or through friends! In short, a way to get many well-heeled visitors to fleece while they are there too!

This decision is not found on any official Sai Baba site so far, so the Trust is presumably spreading this dictate privately. It would be kept as private as possible as it is yet another indictment of the extreme money-grasping culture that the ashrams increasingly introduced, which was silently condoned by Sai Baba himself and his Trust. The severely reduced financial situation in the Sai movement at present, with massive fall-off of visitors and donors is probably the motive for this latest scam… ‘divine daylight robbery’! Nonetheless, it is a very minor crime compared to the embezzlement and misappropriation involving the ever totally secret and unaccountable Sathya Sai Central Trust.

One must ask: will the money-voracious and unaccountable Trust count the usual three years time from the last time the owner came, or does this start now? It is fairly well-known that, if the person registered as ‘the owner’ dies, the room immediately becomes the property of the ashram. The term ‘owner’ was simply a deceit to induce people to donate the large sums required for use of a room when they were in the ashram (the time of residence allowed by ‘owners’ being constantly reduced down to one month per annum or less).  As soon as the ashram finds out an owner is dead, they immediately open the room and empty it out completely, such as – for example, happened in the case of resident Susan Caffery’s room when she died a year and a half ago.

Sathya Sai Baba institutions became increasingly mercenary after I first visited in 1984. By the time of Sai Baba’s 70th birthday in 1996 it had become evident to many of us foreign devotees that Sai Baba’s original policy of not soliciting funds and not incurring undue expenses had become very hollow. Campaigns were started on orders from above within the Sathya Sai Organisation to collect funds for colleges, hospitals, museums and other projects. The amount donors had to give to qualify to become a so-called ‘owner’ of a small 2-roomed flat increased out of all proportion to the construction costs. The once small rent to visitors who were able to share such a small apartment with others was doubled and quadrupled. All devotees were invited to attend the 70th birthday as guest ‘delegates’ (and even casual visitors qualified, so as to inflate statistics) without paying rent. Once there, however, a quite considerable rent was (apologetically) required after all.  One notorious officially approved campaign was the “Currency of Love” Sai Organisation supported scam to swell Central Trust funds.  This scam caused virtually all investments to be a total loss to the devotes who backed it, but only gain to the Central Trust!

Prashanthi Nilayam had soon established a golden rule that was never broken by its officials: there can never be a cash refund! This was taken to such lengths that, when I paid in too much on the spot for books the Books and Publications Trust by mistake, I was refused any cash return. It was the rule, however large the sum. If one complain even a few minutes after discovering a mistake (however large) it is refused. Victims of these errors were told that a refund will in time – and if fully documented – be added to one’s credit on a personal account, but not refunded! Money cannot never be taken out of any account one has deposited it in, even to close down the account. It must be used! That is illegal practice – but devotees did not want to cause waves or confront the system in any way as they would only suffer banishment.

From 1997 onwards, so-called donors had to pay a premium to become owners- starting at US $7,000.00 (see receipt), but – upon arriving at the ashram – were informed that they would only get the use of an apartment for anything up to 1 month a year (or even only 2 weeks, depending), without the possibility of locking off the small kitchen to keep personal belongings in, as owners always had been allowed to do, though the apartment was let out to other visitors for the rest of the time they were back in their homes. (Profitable for the ashram officials who siphoned off all they could).

Many other scams, including kickbacks, embezzlement, bribes, money and property theft, unexplained sacking of Trust members etc., and some of the secrets of the Central Trust, the Sathya Sai Books and Publications Trust and other Sai Baba institutions can be found out about by advanced searching the above words and also ‘Sai Trust’ etc. on the Internet, not least on the search box on my main website at and on this blog site’s search facility. Asaram Bapu: documentation of crimes

Posted by robertpriddy on December 22, 2013

The Dark Side of Asaram Bapu His comments on rape were merely the tip of a sinister iceberg by Haima Deshpande

We read about Asaram Bapu :- “His controversial intervention in the Delhi rape case—when he said “galati ek taraf se nahin hoti hai,” suggesting the victim of the sexual assault was equally responsible for the crime—has recently brought unwanted national attention to the man, but in Gujarat, Asaram and his Motera ashram have been in the eye of a storm since July 2008. “

The controversy in question is the death of two children – 10-year old cousins – who were students at the ashram, but disappeared after one month. The subsequent events speak volumes to those who know how frequent bribery occurs, not least of the police by ‘godmen’ with huge fortunes. The Vagela family were contacted by the ashram, as follows:-

“At 9 pm the same day, Praful Vaghela received a call from the ashram administration inquiring if the children had come home. The Vaghelas went to the ashram and looked for the children. At the end of their futile search, Pankaj Saksena, the administrator of the gurukul told them to go around a peepal tree 11 times and ask for the children. They did so but “nothing happened”. The family, Vaghela claimed, wanted to file a police complaint, but the Ashram administration did not allow them to do so. The family waited out the night and proceeded to the Chandkeda police station the next morning. Two office bearers of the ashram—Vikas Khemcha and Ajay Shah—were already there at the police station. “They went in and spoke to the police. Then they came out and told us to go inside. The police got angry with us when we demanded that a complaint be filed. They did not let us file one,” says the distressed father.”

Eventually, however, the two children were found:- “Their bodies were finally recovered from a dried-up riverbed close to the ashram. Vaghela can still vividly recall the harrowing sight—his son Dipesh’s arms were missing from the shoulder down. All the internal organs were missing, only the hollowed out ribcage remained. His left leg appeared to be cut off at the ankle, the right leg seemed burnt. His nephew Abhishek’s body was half burnt as well. Instead of helping the family, the policemen harassed them and refused to register complaints against Asaram and the ashram.”

This is just one incident among many others which have become known and which has brought Asaram Bapu and his son, Sai Narayan, into police custody and court. What the outcome will be – despite massive evidence of wrongdoing, including sexual abuses – is yet to be seen, though the power of Asaram Bapu with political defenders is not inconsiderable.  (see also selected comments on this article)

Indian President snubs dead ‘god-avatar’? Changed mind?

Posted by robertpriddy on December 19, 2013

CORRECTION It seems that the President may have changed his mind due to the publicity he caused by appearing to ignore Prashanthi Nilayam, because he left for Puttaparthi soon after the conclusion of the public meeting at Anantapur on Monday morning in the special helicopters of the Indian Air force, visited the Prasanthi Nilayam along with Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Governor ESL Narasimhan and Minister Geeta Reddy.President-no-visit-to_PN He stayed a short while only.

The President of India, who endorsed Sathya Sai Baba by going to his funeral, is to pass through Prashanthi Nilayam airport to a political function, but avoiding the ashram! Puttaparthi is useful to the famous people, at least as an airport! People stop by but do not even go to the samadhi to say hello! One can be sure that the Sathya Sai Trust gang and other officials have desperately tried to get luminaries to visit, if only for five minutes and to keep a reputation of Puttaparthi being important. But all in vain. Now that the living God is dead and so can no longer pull strings and give them publicity, it is of no use to them. Perhaps the President of India realises that to visit the ashram now would be to bring forth the mutual endorsements of sexual abusers Asaram Bapu and Sathya Sai Baba?

All the compromised former Prime Ministers, Presidents, Ministers, and other luminaries who were followers of Sai Baba before the massive scandals of sex abuse broke in 1999 were virtually trapped into protecting him so as not to lose face and prestige. What a relief it must be for them not to have to face up to continually endorsing that unconvicted criminal by visiting him.

The Deccan Chronicle also wrote:-

“The President would arrive on a special aircraft to Prasanthinilayam airport at around 11.20 am on December 23 and directly proceed to Anantapur in a helicopter, sources said. After taking part in the celebrations at Sanjeeva Reddy stadium, the President would return to Prasanthinilayam and proceed to Hyderabad in a special aircraft.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy and Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan would accompany the President.
The police authorities are making elaborate security arrangements at Puttaparthi airport and Sanjeeva Reddy stadium in Anantapur district in the wake of President’s visit.”

The airport – financed by the State and given to Sai Baba – is a very dead duck, very seldom used at all, and impossible to sell! The President’s ‘special aircraft’ will simply use it as a suitable landing place for his travels. See also  Sathya Sai Airport “white elephant” for sale!

Asaram Bapu and Sai: politics their only hope of salvation?

Posted by robertpriddy on December 12, 2013

Sai-admits-raping The pivotal case against rich and powerful bogus godmen-rapists  yet to be staged in India is underway. Son of accused rapist and criminal guru Asaram Bapu, Narayan Sai, has reportedly admitted a lot already… having had physical relationships with 8 women disciples! (see first post news report on right). Sai’s lawyer, as would only be expected, denied that this was the case.

Further, his father Asaram, crowed about the BJP’s electoral improvement to 46% of the vote in Rajasthan as being a ‘victory for truth’, and made the implication that it would clear him of sexual assaults (and his numerous other crimes).

In First Post we also read:- “The self-styled godman had alleged that the Congress was responsible for his implication in the sexual assault case”He further stated: Everything will be fine with the passage of time.”

That he  supports BJP politicians is one thing, but what he himself did is quite another. Yet he obviously hopes that politicians will save him, now trying to blame Congress for the fact that one of his courageous victims dared to report him to the police. He is no doubt hoping that Narendra Modi will become the BJP Prime Minister but will most likely not allow the quashing of the case, as former P.M. Narasimha Rao did in quashing the far worse CBI case against Sathya Sai Baba’s undoubted 1993 murder involvement. Nonetheless, Modi has been accused of indirect support for Asaram ( Narendra Modi going slow on Asaram case: Gujarat Congress)

Indian rationalists versus superstition: Jana Vignana Vedika

Posted by robertpriddy on December 9, 2013

Jana Vignana Vedika is an Indian rationalist organisation which striving to create awareness among people about the importance of science in daily life and motivates many volunteers to give demonstrations of a range of black magic tricks so as to create awareness of superstition among the populace.

It has numerous outlets in the Indian media. It’s main agenda is:-

A man’s ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death.

Scientific research is based on the idea that everything that takes place is determined by laws of nature, and therefore this holds for the action of people. For this reason, a research scientist will hardly be inclined to believe that events could be influenced by a prayer, i.e. by a wish addressed to a Supernatural Being.

Only a life, lived for others, is a life worthwhile. The minority, the ruling class at present, has the schools and press, usually the Church as well, under its thumb. This enables it to organize and sway the emotions of the masses, and make its tool of them.

Its stated aims are:-

To popularize science and to promote scientific temper among people

To eradicate obscurantist, superstitious and paranormal and mystical practices from people by means of popularization of science

To understand the scientific basis behind several of the problems faced by the people and to explore remedial solutions for the same

To facilitate the fruits of science which are otherwise confined to the rich to reach the underprivileged also

To encourage quest for knowledge and to strive for national integrity, self reliance, world peace, social progress and cultural vibrancy

To encourage research in divergent areas with people’s welfare as the prime motto

To design programmes suitable to realize the objectives set as above  (see

Professor Lane on the Shadow of Sai Baba

Posted by robertpriddy on December 7, 2013

In THE SHADOW OF A GOD-MAN  Exposing Sathya Sai Baba by Professor Christopher Lane summarises some of the reasons for his exposing Sathya Sai Baba. Professor Lane was one of the first to be attacked on the Internet by Indian authorities, devotees of Sai Baba, trolls and defamers. He was not the last! Countless Sai Baba followers have shown that they have no regard for the teachings of their God-guru as regards respect for others and avoidance of hate etc. Their output through a decade or more has been huge, 90% anonymously, such that only a fraction of it has been possible to exhibit. Some examples are found here

When he was only 15 years old in California, Professor Lane first heard of Sai Baba by reading Arnold Schulman’s book ‘Baba’. He was very interested, but became somewhat suspicious of the miracle claims. His scepticism was vindicated years later. In the 1980s he and Brian Walsh opened the web site The Neural Surfer, which included  information about ” the hidden exploits of a number of nefarious spiritual leaders, including Thakar Singh, John-Roger Hinkins, and Sathya Sai Baba.” A number of Sai Baba followers contacted him about being deceived and also sexually exploited under false pretenses by Sathya Sai Baba,  describing in vivid detail  how Sai Baba had sexually seduced them. After posting such reports. Lane was attacked by Sai factions worldwide, including demands that his website be taken off the www made to  UCSD and MSAC. Several websites were also made which tried “to cast doubts on Sai’s sexual exploits as well as attacking the veracity of my research on him and the integrity of those who claimed abuse”. One very highly placed politician in India contacted UCSD about my website and Lane was politely asked by the Webmaster at UCSD to take it down to avoid further political turmoil. He then transferred the site to MSAC, but even here the President of the college was asked to shut down The Neural Surfer, which he  refused to do on the grounds of academic freedom. On his site he includes the entire BBC documentary film ‘The Secret Swami’ in an easily-watchable and very clear streamed video.
