The charismatic appeal of Sai Baba

Posted by robertpriddy on July 31, 2014

Charisma is well-known and most widespread. It has been widely portrayed in literature, debated intensively as a social phenomenon which in earlier sociology, but has been relatively little researched by modern scientific methods. Comparative studies of different kinds of charismatic persons are very few. There are some key similarities and differences in the uses to which charisma and the authority or power which it almost invariably makes possible are used. Sathya Sai Baba, whose charisma was very considerable, shared many of it typical features with other charismatic figures as will be seen here.

Charisma is an interactive phenomenon: Charisma, from the Greek, was believed to be a divine quality, blessedness endowing people with superhuman powers. This is a false assumptions about how any person achieved charisma. Charm, attractiveness, apparent compassion and love of everyone have a charisma-inducing effect, one that also happens to be a defining mark of a sociopath. It is exclusively an interaction between a person and an audience whereby they are told what they want to hear.  A devoted following is the essential condition of the charismatic figure. The intense desire for a leader towards a promised land can arise from serious sufferings such as come of social disruption, poverty and unemployment or loss of sovereignty, confidence in one’s own country, its culture, religion, leaders and people. Personal attraction is an interaction between people who perceive likeability in another. Seeming greatness and infallibility as a leader bewitched people into admiring Sathya Sai Baba, who encouraged it himself constantly among the peasantry of backward southern India from his very early years. Thus we see that charisma cannot come into being in anyone on their own, it is not any inborn or inner nature of the personality.  Sathya Sai Baba was worshipped as a divine incarnation by some close to him in babyhood and thereafter and his following grew in the villages and at school until he announced he was an incarnation come to save his devotees and eventually the entire world.

When social conditions bad or chaotic, they can favour the rise of a charismatic leader whether political or religious. Not only are Lenin and Hitler classic examples of this, but it was also true of  the Dalai Lama’s charismatic position as the spiritual head of the Tibetan people after occupation by the Chinese. In India after Independence, the country went through massive crises, especially religious (the Hindu-Muslim mass murdering) and economic, with no solution to huge poverty, ill-health and suffering, which all came to be blamed by those in power on the former British rule. The degeneration of values in public life with corruption and bribery as the norm in post-Independence India went against the religious sentiments and teachings of Hinduism which imbue the population, on which background the desire for a very strong spiritual leader was fulfilled by the eventual emergence of Sathya Sai Baba as having both moral and a very unnatural mystical appeal.

The charismatic is always endowed with great apparent self-confidence (outwardly and in public if not also necessarily inwardly and in private – see Sai Baba’s major claims here). People are not born with such ‘charismatic’ self-confidence in public because it comes only from getting positive responses from the social environment. Despite this, Sai Baba’s apparent unmoved self-certainty and emotional invulnerability degenerated in his later years as he became an invalid and declined mentally and physically to the utmost degree before his death.

To reinforce their relationship to their following, charismatic leaders often project their own image as the successor of some powerful tradition, whether divine or heroic, and the constant reinforcement of a mythology laden with promises of a utopian future and even divine salvation from the cycle of rebirth (as Sai Baba did, provided one followed his directives). Sai Baba hammered away at promoting the all importance of ‘selfless love’ and panacea promises of transformation of India, then of the whole world. He insisted that his overall mission in life was to regenerate the ancient Indian religious value system of the Vedas and reclaim India from its degeneracy to lead the entire world into a new age of truth and goodness with universal peace, and that within a very short period of time which has already expired. The packaging of his retrogressive and anti-scientific, anti-intellectual agenda and ambitions were always positive and before long no word of criticism of any kind could be said in his presence or to his zealous followers without consequences from exclusion from his movement to severe discipline on his powerless students and dependent servitors of all kinds. As his influence grew, he imposed authoritarian rule in his ashrams and all the institutions built up around him and within his fiefdom. Sai Baba always spoke of his fathomless compassion and love for all, and succeeded in becoming seen as such by many who were dazzled by meeting him, though a dispassionate evaluation of his life shows that he often lacked patience and empathy with others, despite all his countless promises and claims of omnipotent protection of their welfare.

Sai Baba materialises a diamond ring & drops vibuti pellet (photos)

Posted by robertpriddy on July 29, 2014

BabaringThe scan of part of a photo sold in Puttaparthi shows what seems to be Sai Baba materialising ‘from thin air’ a diamond in a gold setting. The object is not detached from the hand, though, and the ring could easily be held in the crook of the thumb. This is therefore no proof of materialization. It is said that ‘seeing is believing’ but, especially in this kind of ‘incredible’ case belief usually precedes seeing… one sees what one already believes, or wishes to see and believe:-

Blow-up1

Those who believed this photo to be proof of his ability to manifest objects were invariably already devoted to Sai Baba. Those who even got as far as an interview so as to be able to watch at all closely such ‘materialisations’ have already gone through a long process of preparation to believe it must be genuine. They will always have read incredible stories in emotional hagiographic books praising Sai Baba, seen propaganda videos and films, met people who claim to have witnessed miracles of all kinds. They will also already have learned that those who express scepticism or question claims are soon excluded from the groups that gather around Sai Baba, and are not welcome in his organisation meetings (even if not also banned outright from attending them or visiting the ashrams).

The entire business of taking objects out of thin air is, according to Sai Baba, was to help convince those who see it that he was above and beyond all worldly limitations. He attached a mystical symbolism to this act when giving what he pretended are diamond rings (see scanned quotation on left). Yet he was sometimes asked to produce large objects (on one occasion a pumpkin). This he did not do and never did. The largest objects he allegedly ‘materialised’ were statuettes of Krishna and the like taken by him out of deep sand when he took selected groups out to picnics. However, the places chosen – apparently by chance – were almost certainly pre-arranged by his closest servitor Colonel Joga Rao, who served as his ashram planner and engineer.

Residents of the ashram knew that Joga Rao did NOT believe in any miraculous powers, but justified his work with Sai Baba because he felt it led to improvements in the lot of the poor people of Andhra Pradesh, providing money for school, health care etc. This fact was never publicized or written about, but I was told this by the famous journalist, later Sai Baba’s editor V.K. Narasimhan, who spoke very freely to me in private on many occasions. When he told me that I could not believe my ears, but he told me a lot about Joga Rao (a man whose filthy jokes he hated but had to endure when Sai Baba allocated them a room in which both must stay while travelling with him). This was confirmed to me again when a Norwegian who was in a group planning an eco waste system for Prashanthi ashram which asked Rao whether they should not consult Baba on some issues. They got the comment: “What does Sai Baba know about it?” So Colonel Joga Rao, who for years walked behind Sai Baba at his darsans and held his hanky for Baba to wipe his hand on and regularly took over the pile of letters he collected, was passing vibuti balls to him the while, convinced that it was for the best all in all!

Numerous testimonies that Baba dropped vibuthi pellets in front of former devotees, and also that he had, in the private interview room, a vibuthi pellet ‘machine’ which compressed the powder with water. Previous photographic or video evidence of pellets (between his fingers etc.) were sparse and not so clear. The video which has emerged on YouTube removes all possible doubt that he crushed pre-prepared pellets and did not materialise those. See two still captures of the dropped pellet:-

To view a short clip with the important footage of the above, go to https://www.dropbox.com/s/ain9opy4r1nzssi/Vibuti%20pellet%20drop.mov?dl=0 It looks as thought, having dropped the vibuti pellet, Baba quickly drops letters as well so a lady picks it all up (seems to be aware of the situation). Baba looks worried and then tried to avert people’s attention. Sathya Sai Baba drops Vibuti Pellet at darshan. Baba drops the pellet and its fall is very clearly visible. This occurs at 1.03 secs. into the video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBilntPmlqE&feature=share

Sathya Sai Central Trust self-revealing propaganda

Posted by robertpriddy on July 26, 2014

Here is some Sathya Sai Central Trust Propaganda again. Considering that the entire basis of Sathya Sai Baba and his operations always was the devotees and followers who gave everything he got – and that he ill-treated so many of them through constant breaks of trust, even called many demons, and abused many of their sons sexually, one should take this Sai Trust report with a handful of salt!

On the left is the text of an article – presumably based on a press release by the Sathya Sai Central Trust. The remarkable thing about it is that it amounts to a public admission of the truth of what dissidents have claimed since around 2000, that the Trust had lost credibility and was under a crisis. It is an attempt to reinstate the trust that donors so unfortunately misplaced it the Central Trust, but which was very largely destroyed after the death of Sathya Sai Baba.

Indeed, the very figure whose name it bears lost trust on a massive scale in recent years, and not least also his corrupt cronies like the nationally discredited former Board member, P.N. Bhagwati and the embezzling Colonel Joga Rao among several other board members. The flow of donations from devotees deteriorated gradually and greatly and the Trust is now desperately trying to recreate a positive facade so as to get back into the free money.

Through the vicious battle for supremacy of the billions, not least between the subsequent winner of that dirty war, the nephew R.J. Ratnakar, and the other relatives of Sai Baba who were then dispossessed entirely, having also been threatened with murder! So how should one suddenly trust people who did such things? It would be a huge mistake to believe their propaganda knowing of many illegal money transfers and secret transactions underhandedly made (court cases against the he current institution just disappeared and bribery is known to have been an instrument Sai Baba and co. widely employed).

The article mentions that the trust is now “embracing transparency”, admitting unwittingly that it never did before, as we have always emphasised as a known and despicable fact in any alleged charity. Despite now publishing general figures annually – the Trust is still largely non-transparent – for example, no donor can access the accounts and no minutes of board meetings are at all accessible.

Marketing the profiles of the Trust members as people holding prestigious positions earlier will hardly change the situation, such a large honey pot attracts wasps of all kinds. The trust is appointing professionals now, meaning it never had them earlier? Though cash donations are refused now – it affirms that they operated in cash earlier. Considering the Trust’s known methods, it is likely that they paid dailybhaskar for this article.

Witchcraft killings in Modi’s Hindu India

Posted by robertpriddy on July 24, 2014

india

Indian sorceryWitchcraft or sorcery has been common in India since ancient times. The superstition is connected to the religious outlook which posits any number of otherworldly deities, demons, spirits, bhootas, ghosts and disincarnate entities. All this is deeply engrained in the early scriptures like Puranas and not least in the honoured Ramayana epic. Most unfortunately for India, the positive values found in Indian scripture are completely overrun by the mass of legends, myths, superstitions and countless temples to demons and deities and virtual, all constantly celebrated in entirely unproductive rituals of almost every imaginable futile kind, whether to cause prosperity, cures, rain, death of enemies and so on.

The Washinton Post reports: “In places where superstition and vigilantism overlap and small rumors can turn deadly, nearly 2,100 people accused of witchcraft have been killed between 2000 and 2012, according to crime records gathered by the Indian newspaper Mint. Others placed the number at 2,500; others higher still. “Like the proverbial tip of a very deep iceberg, available data hides much of the reality of a problem that is deeply ingrained in society,” according to New Delhi-based Partners for Law in Development. “It is only the most gruesome cases that are reported — most cases of witch-hunting go unreported and unrecorded.”

The present Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, is a right-wing Hindu nationalist who supports the primitive ‘religiosity’ of the masses and thus also its attached superstitions and unproven speculations of the weirdest kinds. He is but the latest in a long line of Hindu Indian PMs and Presidents who have endorsed, attended upon and worshipped numerous Indian self-proclaimed ‘Gods’, most notably the megalomaniac and continuously State-protected Sathya Sai Baba (see The Guardian). With Modi a devotees, is it surprising that belief in witchcraft and the ghastly and deadly crimes it engenders persists among the least educated and vulnerable when the top people in India are so deluded and publicly perform meaningless and time-wasting Hindu rituals, setting an example to yet more deluded people as if the ancient scriptures have real validity in the modern world and in the face of science? Modi visited and praised both Sai Baba and his sinister associate Asaram Bapu, both major sex abuse offenders and both connected closely to murder and disappearances.

The dead body found from sewage – Two arrested along with the Charlatan

Ranpur-3.11 (IMS) The dead body of the girl kidnapped from the village, Ranapur oh the day of Kaali festival was found in a pit today which was believed to be a. sacrifice. In connection with this incident the arrest of the charlatan and other two has created shock in this area. The villagers demanded the arrest of others involved in this incident and gheravoed the police. Receiving this information the Magistrate arrived in the village with police force and the villagers left leaving the dead body of the child. The tantrik practitioner, Braja Padhan son of Krishia Padhan of the village, Nagjhar, Sudam Pohan and other three instigated Akhil Padhan of the village, Bimbadhapurto bring a child in lieu of five thousand rupees, to the forest. According to this agreement he enticed the son of Madana Sundara, Babana and brought him to the forest. They saw the boy and said that a male child would not serve the purpose. This was on the day of Kaali Puja. So, he left the boy and brought the daughter of Biranchi Padhan, Susa of that village, to the forest, enticing her with chocolates. There in the forest one after another went on giving blows on the face of the girl till blood came out. Collecting the blood flowing from the nose of the girl in a pot who had become unconscious, they proceeded with the dead body towards the village Nagjhar assuring the kidnapper to pay him the next day. To mislead the sacrifice as a drowning case they threw the dead body in a pit near the Kaali temple of the village, Nagjhar. The body was detected the next day. The police have arrested them and kept in custody except the prime accused, Krishia. The culprits admitted their crime to the police.

Swami Nityananda, known sex abuser under more legal scrutiny

Posted by robertpriddy on July 18, 2014

Nityananda_torturer Further proof that the noble and moral ‘spirituality’ is no more a part of the big godman business! At least, the good news is that the war between the wary modern Internet-educated people of the world and the bubble of power-hungry swamis & supporters in charge of various spiritual organisations, will help to remove this cynical exploitation of the vulnerable, defenceless and weak (plus needy and ill-informed) people. The Sathya Sai Baba people were not amused when the bawdy bogus guru Nityananda arrived at the funeral of their own bawdy sex abusing ‘god’.

HC Nod for Potency Test of Nithyananda
By Express News Service Published: 17th July 2014 08:53 AM

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday gave the green signal to the police to conduct a potency test on controversial and self-styled godman  Nithyananda. The court also dismissed a criminal petition filed by him challenging an order passed by a Ramanagaram court dated June 18, 2012 for conducting various tests on him.

While passing the order, Justice S N Satyanarayana directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which is investigating the case, to take Nithyananda into custody and conduct the potency test if he refuses to undergo it. Arathi Rao, one of his devotees, had filed a rape and sexual harassment complaint against him.

In response, Nithyananda had submitted before the court that he is like a six-year-old boy and is not capable of indulging in sexual intercourse with anybody. After his submission, the court directed the police to conduct a potency test on him. However, Nithyananda had challenged this in the High Court.

Justice Satyanarayana also dismissed another petition filed by Nithyananda seeking to quash the complaint filed by Arathi Rao and stay the CID investigation. The court observed that the investigation is in progress and it does not want to interfere in the investigation at this jucture.

Petition Dismissed: The court also dismissed another petition filed by four accused Gopal Reddy, Siva Vallabanani, Ragini and Dhanashekharan seeking to quash a complaint filed against them by Nithyananda’s driver Lenin.

‘Unnatural sex’ – Asaram Bapu

Posted by robertpriddy on July 17, 2014

Ahmedabad: Not only rape, Asaram Bapu charged with unnatural sex too

CLICK TO FIND SOURCE

CLICK TO FIND SOURCE – Note that fervid defenders of this bogus guru have posted videos alleging that the above is a false claim… there is not length to which zealots and bigots will not go to cover up crimes by Hindu gurus.

It is not just the allegations of rape that self-styled godman Asaram faces. In the charge sheet filed against him before the chief judicial magistrate in Gandhinagar on January 9, he has been charged with having unnatural sex in the form of oral sex (under section 377 of Indian Penal Code) with the Surat-based victim (who lodged the case) and six other girls.

The charge sheet mentions that the victim was taken to Asaram in 2001 when the accused had engaged in oral sex with her. It also mentions a similar incident of 2005. “In 2005, Asaram had called the victim and six other girls to Modasa ashram where he performed oral sex with the victim and the other girls,” the charge sheet mentions.

The summary of the charge sheet mentions the criminal act by the main accused with the help of Bharti (daughter of Asaram), Laxmi (his wife), Nirmala alias Dhel, Mira alias Baglo, Dhruvi and Jashuben alias Jassi in the case.

The investigating team has filed a 1,000-page charge sheet against Asaram and six others in the alleged rape case of a Surat-based girl. According to the police, they have statements of around 100 witnesses to support the case of rape and conspiracy to rape against the godman.

In the charge sheet, police also submitted that Asaram has changed the room of the first incident — at Shanit Vatika or farm house. “As per the estate records, approved plan and personal visit to the room of the farm house, it appears that the accused has changed it to destroy evidences.

Therefore, he is also charged under section 201 of IPC,” states the charge sheet.

According to the charge sheet, between 2001 and 2007, Asaram repeatedly sexually abused the victim with the help of other accused in the case. Complainant also mentioned that because of influential personality and repeated threats to kill her, she was not able to narrate or complain about this earlier.

Meanwhile, the court on Wednesday fixed January 29 as further date of hearing the case to provide facility of a chartered flight to Asaram. The police, however, are opposing the application stating that the Gandhinagar court does not have the power and jurisdiction to extend such a facility as the accused is under the custody of Jodhpur police.

On December 5, 2009, an erstwhile Asaram devotee Raju Chandok was shot at by two unidentified gunmen. Raju was in Asaram’s bad books for exposing his alleged sexual activities and black magic rituals in front of the commission.

Raju, who survived three bullets, later lodged an FIR with the police, accusing Asaram and two of his unnamed accomplices of criminal conspiracy and attempt to murder.

If Raju exposed Asaram before the commission, the former personal assistant to Asaram’s son Narayan Sai, Mahendra Chawla, alleged that he had seen Sai performing gory rituals over corpses on at least three occasions in Jhabua, Ranchi and Himmatnagar.

Chawla alleged that Sai, clad in a black outfit, used to perform these macabre rituals over corpses with human skulls kept over them. Unable to bear these, Chawla parted ways with Sai and settled in Thane as an insurance agent in 2005.

Narendra Modi’s love of false Hindu gurus

CLICK ON IMG. TO READ MORE

The election of the Hindu-nationalist Narendra Modi, whose speckled past is much documented, is a major potential threat to control of dangerous Indian-based guru cults. This is important especially now as regards the possible quashing of the entire legal process against the despicable male chauvinist and believer in black magic and usurper of government and other land. In custody for many months and repeatedly denied bail, he stands accused of being a serial sexual abuser, pedophile. He and/or his lieutenants have apparently killed the main witness against him, as well as inciting violence and major harassment against the prosecution, the defendants and their lawyers.

Modi-AsaramBOther murders by Asaram or his hired goondas are alleged, and the disappearance and death of boys from his ashram is proven. Asaram Bapu expressed confidence that, when Modi would be elected, that ‘everything will come right’, meaning that he would get his release and escape justice. It remains to be seen what Modi will do and how far he will dare to push the already shaky legal system into doing his will to protect even these gurus. He holds such figures to be the bedrock of the nation’s culture!

Modi’s stand on the Ayodhya mosque made him a hate figure for Muslims – and suspect to most external observers as a Hindu fanatic. So he is having to play it down and tread very carefully. Perhaps this sense has caused these new measures here and there so as not to bring Modi into disrepute or get Hindus inflamed either. The Hindutva’s military wing  is a terrifying and powerful organisation! Should it explode we could have something like the Hindu-Muslim riots of Independence times perhaps.

Modi also worshipped the pedophile and chief murder accomplice, Sathya Sai Baba

modi-ssbmodi-babaIt is well-known to informed circles in India and the media (and it is fully documented, also on-line)  that a series of Indian Prime Ministers and Presidents have worshipped Sathya Sai Baba – before they became aware of the many extremely credible sworn testimonies of his sexual abuses of boys and young men. Most of them believed their prestige and that of India would suffer were this to be investigated, so PM Narasimha Rao with S.B. Chavan  and ex-Chief Justice Bhagwati plus their subordinates covered up for him and quashed the CBI investigation before it exposed him fully. Now we have Narendra Modi who is no better in these respects, probably far worse if anything.

Sathya Sai Summer Course in Indian Culture and Spirituality 2014

Posted by robertpriddy on July 8, 2014

Summer Course Indian Culture etc. 2014

Summer Course
Indian Culture etc. 2014

Reflecting the decline of the fame of their god-guru, Sathya Sai Baba, a much slimmed down Summer Course in Indian Culture and Spirituality was held on June the 8th and 9th. ‘Slimmed down’ from the traditional fifteen days! It was attended mainly by students of the various Sai colleges for whom this was obligatory as usual (the ‘captive audience’ who have to listen to the same old stuff over and over). A moderate crowd of residents and villagers were visible on the photos of the events, which included other attractions to draw such as Vedic chanting by student, ritual yagna worship, the inevitable bhajan group sing along sessions, a quiz programme and study circles, regular feeding sessions at the canteen etc. But the previous year’s course (2013) was apparently yet more nutritious when “At the end of the programme a sumptuous feast was organized for all the participants in the South Indian Canteen.” (as reported by saibabaofindia.com). Formerly youth from all over India and foreigners were invited (though this was not so during the 1990s). Overseas devotees were not seen anywhere.

The VIP teachers and speakers are most often former students of Sai colleges, indoctrinated since boyhood with ‘Swami’s teachings’ and in most cases  by former ‘form boys’, (his privileged ‘chics‘, especially winners of Gold Medals who won their kudos be good performance in Swami’s carnal presence). These relative youngsters cannot think outside the box in which Sai Baba enclosed their minds, having been subjected to rote learning and not asking questions or doing other than accept what they were told (I have this not least on the authority of the famous journalist, my close friend V.K. Narasimhan, who was close to SB as his journal’s editor, translator and daily companion).

Among many typical fanciful claims, one was remarkable. In his talk, Dr. N. Siva Kumar told about a young boy who was “spiritually attracted to Swami from a very young age” (sic!) and who became a model follower. But he was struck down by an incurable disease and soon passed away.

Boyfriends of Sai Baba

Boyfriends of Sai Baba

Everyone was stunned and questioned ‘why Swami didn’t bless this person?’ His body was being taken for cremation and there was a large crowd following the procession. One of the devotees, seeing the huge following, thought of taking pictures, thinking that it will motivate others to follow his example. He took photographs of the final procession. When these photos were shown to others, everyone was able to see in every, single photo of the procession, Swami physically standing. All were so happy to know that this person had spiritual nearness with Swami.
How can we get the spiritual nearness? We can get this spiritual nearness by actively participating in the schedule of the University and ensuring that we do our duty sincerely. The first takeaway of this aspect, Upa, is that let us strive everyday to cultivate this spiritual nearness to Swami. This, over a period will definitely protect us.

Interestingly no such photos were ever shown anywhere, so none can prove that they existed. Why not? Another set of fakes and photo-shopped images of Sai Baba in the attempt to prove miracles already out would hardly do much damage.  However near and dear Sai Baba claimed he held his boys and others, Shivakumar’s conclusion is most patently untrue. I shall spell it out… obviously another concocted story by SB officials to limit the great damage that this death would otherwise do to devotees’s faith in him!  Further, the ‘protection of the avatar’ of his devotees has constantly been shown not to exist for a large number of devotees, (as partly documented here). Some notable cases include Professor Kasturi (his official biographer), Kutumb Rao (ex-ambassadorial head of Prashanthi ashram), Mrs. Barbara Sinclair (wife of billionaire donor James Sinclair), Mrs Shanti Jegathesan, her son Jegan (a Sai Baba favourite!) , Dr. John Hislop, four former devotee students who police murdered in 1993 in SB’s own apartment, and not least in countless testimonies of ex-followers who tell of deaths, major accidents, imprisonments, single and group suicides, ugly cancer death, the disappearance and murders of devotees.

Dr. N. SivakumarWhat use is a doctorate from Sai University if it was not gained by excellence of knowledge but rests on favour for believing the official cover-up picture, SB’s vast false claims, and plenty of utmost drivel uttered by him in discourses? As a former examiner at University of Oslo, I can safely say, worthless! How Sivakumar received a gold medal for ‘academic excellence’ and “the prestigious All rounder gold medal from Bhagavan” is anyone’s guess (but Sai Baba always had his hand in it). I have been informed by a former student of the actual qualification for that doubtful ‘honour’. Dr N. Sivakumar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Commerce, Brindavan Campus, and – as a keen student of the Vedas – he incorporates the wisdom from the Vedas and Upanishads in modern-day subjects (or vice-versa?) when he teaches university students. As if those ancient hymns and religious speculations supersede all that civilisation has achieve in understanding since such scientifically and humanistically primitive times!

All those I know who have attended any of Sai Baba’s endless repetitive Kulwant Hall discourses cannoy point to any original thought having never been expressed there, and absolutely not by any selected VIP speaker, foreign visitor or the countless students who have parroted from the lectern. Being a sectarian kind of ‘Hindu-evangelism’, nothing of real significance that was not already expressed by Sai Baba could be said within the precincts of Prashanthi Nilayam, for it was entirely for propagating the so-called ‘teachings’ of Sathya Sai Baba. But Sai Baba contributed no original insights that were not already to be found in the Indian tradition and moreover he claimed purely and simply to be reviving the existing Vedic legacy of sanathana dharma (or basic Hindu values), which is nothing new at all. The entire vastness of the world of modern research knowledge – in whichever sciences or humanities – lay almost wholly beyond the ken of Sai Baba (who made many ignorant statements) and anything in any way undermining his stated views was not to be admitted to the precincts of Prashanthi Nilayam. (He repeatedly ridiculed scholars and scientists). Even medicine, which was one of the disciplines taught, was sidelined in his public discourses in favour of Sai Baba’s puritan brand of spiritual healing through ‘prayer to Swami’, worship (pujas, arati), eating ‘miraculous’ substances like vibuti ash and amrit nectar, claptrap about ‘vibrational healing’, the ‘cancelling of cancer’ by SB’s divine will, and preaching about the causes of all illnesses being failure to observe moral religious teachings in daily life!

Rolf Harris could not lie his way out of prison sentence

Unlike Sai Baba, Rolf Harris was unable – despite his fame and popularity – to escape the consequences of his lustful crimes. Though he knew Queen Elisabeth, Prince Charles and most of the prominent figures in UK and in much of the world too, he was finally caught out. He threw his weight about, even in court (singing etc.) and towards his accusers who he slandered most mendaciously and showed not a shred of contrition. His sentence of 5 years 9 month caused many to complain as far too light considering his despicable behaviour. His worship of the serial sex abuser of young boys and men Sai Baba – who always cunningly promised protection to all his devotees – did not save him from prosecution and prison. Harris “claimed the guru’s teachings had transformed his life and played his famous didgeridoo on a fund-raising CD of mystic chants.” Unlike Sai Baba, he did not have the Prime Minister, President, Supreme Court Chief Justices as his devoted worshippers, so the charges against him were not quashed (as they were across the board for Sai Baba by PM Narasimha Rao, Home Minister S.B. Chavan with the aid of former ex-Chief Justice Bhagwati (his devoted servant).

Defenders of Sai Baba take note! Many comments by devotees in denial and his Hindu endorsers have said that all the good works Sai Baba did were enough to show that he was good, but they never wanted to know about the tremendous life suffering and also suicides that came of his sex abuses.
Compare this ‘excuse’ with what his defending attorney said to Harris, “In the course of his 60 years in the entertainment business he has given much of his spare time freely and unstintingly to a variety of charitable causes with no complaint about his behaviour.” In sentencing Harris, the judge said: “You have been the recipient of a number of honours and awards over the years, you have done many good and charitable works and numerous people have attested to your positive good character. But the verdicts of the jury show that in the period from 1969 to 1986 you were also a sex offender, committing 12 indecent assaults on four victims who were variously aged between eight and 19 at the time. He went on: “You have shown no remorse for your crimes at all. Your reputation lies in ruins, you have been stripped of your honours, but you have no one to blame but yourself.” (source

The UK authorities – police, courts, politicians and all under their jurisdiction are at long last catching up with and acting upon the realisation that people in high places can be extreme and serial sexual abusers. This initiates a genuine revolution in the treatment of women as equals, which has been far less than the case since time began, depriving them of basic human rights and justice, especially where sexual matters are concerned. The same is occurring as regards the abuse of boys by men, which has been shown to be extremely widespread, with the Roman Catholic Church as one several of the worst offending religious institutions (still dragging its feet wherever possible!). Britain is once again in the forefront of the world as regards taking most serious allegations seriously (at last) and actually bringing pedophiles and sexual abusers to justice. Among countries at the other extreme end of the scale is India, where the whole issue has been totally taboo until very recently, and which is still one of the worst examples of impunity for such criminals (especially when they claim to be ‘godmen’ or ‘godwomen’). Women in India are up against a massive, almost wall-to-wall male chauvinism, with even elected politicians (including PMs and Presidents) endorsing and/defending those who were or are known perpetrators of most heinous sexual crimes (Sathya Sai Baba, Asaram Bapu for a start). Major Government research with Help the Children and UNICEF has proved that sexual abuse of underage girls and boys is rife in India, yet cases are very few and convictions are utterly minimal! It is known worldwide that the rape and murder of defenceless women and even young girls is not even followed up by the police in many cases and the increasingly outraged population are given many promises which seldom lead to satisfactory indictments of all involved (esp. the police) and no apparent improvement in the male-dominant culture as a whole.
