Asaram Bapu and co. cause flight disruption

Self-styled Hindu godman Asaram Bapu and his brigade of devotees created commotion on a Jet Airways Jodhpur-Delhi flight, chanting slogans and refusing to sit through the entire flight duration, said three passengers who were on board, reported the Economic Times (ET). (Read more here)

“At around 2:00 pm, suddenly, government officials and cops form a periphery near the airport security as people huddled as close as they could to see one certain Asaram Bapu in his infamous red beanie, being wheeled in on a chair. As they wheeled him towards boarding we could hear the word ‘Sai’ being murmured in veneration of the “God-man” who is being held on rape charges.

The flight takes off and there are no in-flight instructions given by the air hostesses. No instructions on how to operate the life safety jackets, or the oxygen masks if we needed them. We were left to fend for ourselves. …the crew who seemed to be only too caught up in asking Asaram Bapu’s followers to calm down and stay seated on an extremely turbulent flight, despite the fact that they could not seem to understand the importance of seat belts.

On being repeatedly asked and warned, quite half-heartedly, about being seated, the God-man’s followers, merely laughed it off and continued their acts of defiance of protocol. … all of Asaram’s whims were being prioritized, at the expense of the lives of the remaining flight passengers. When it got to an overwhelming point where we could not just sit and take it anymore, my co-passenger and I got hold of one of the cabin crew and asked her to please justify the reason for the horrific experience we were having.”
