Phyllis Krystal died early December aged 102

Phyllis Krystal was one of Sathya Sai Baba’s earliest Western promoters through her hagiographic book ‘The Ultimate Experience’. The title itself is enough to show that this Americanised British woman was an exaggeration expert of some stature. I knew her somewhat from meeting her in an interview and through e-mails. She was a speaker at a Sathya Sai Europe Conference in Hamburg, 1992, and my wife also met her and found her unpleasantly supercilious. She made a name for herself with a New Age type book called ‘Cutting the Ties that Bind’, based on  Sai Baba’s unprofessional and misleading psychological ‘teachings’, showing herself to be the amateur psychologist she was. Her husband was a millionaire (who was invited by Sai Baba to interviews with her). He died some decades ago and she was very rich, travelled the world first class and lived at the best hotels when visiting Sai conferences. Nonetheless, she took it upon herself to promote Sai Baba’s programme called ‘Ceiling on Desires’ which urged everyone to use the minimum of resources for oneself or own’s own desires and comforts.

Sai Baba teachings childsplay, claims Phyllis Krystal (this most uncritical propagator of Sathya Sai Baba’s “teachings” claimed that they are so clear that a child can understand them and follow them. They are superficial when they are simple… known to most devotees only in the form of aphorisms, a few sayings and statements which are highly generalised and their vagueness can be therefore interpreted in many ways. If they were clear and straightforward, who would take them seriously in an adult world!
