Almost anyone who sets up as a spiritual guru who has a minimum of memory of the teachings of Sai Baba or such like can make a massive fortune. All it takes is powerful self-interest, ability to deceive and near total lack of moral sense!  (See the Guru Gallery)

KURNOOL: Bala Sai Baba, a self-proclaimed godman, passed away on Tuesday following a cardiac arrest. He was 58. He had complained of chest pain on Monday and was admitted to a hospital in Hyderabad.

He shot to fame in the 1980 when he first donned the spiritual guru avatar and started attracting people to his small hermitage near Kurnool. Locals claim he took advantage of his resemblance to Sri Sathya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi, who too possessed a curly mane, began wearing similar costumes and proclaimed himself ‘Bala Sai Baba’.

Over the years, he successfully built a spiritual empire which is now said to be worth several hundreds of crores of of rupees, with two ashrams at Kurnool and Hyderabad and properties at many other places. While all’s not rosy with Bala Sai Baba’s life, he was mired in controversy and was accused of encroaching on a land adjacent to his trust. He fought a long legal battle in a cheque bounce case too.
