After almost 30 years of Mission (24 -12 72, in Bangalore), Sathya Sai Baba gave the first of a series of annual Discourses on Jesus Christ. . The Discourse culminates in a preposterous claim that Jesus announced Sai Baba’s future Advent from the Cross. This is still taken seriously by devotees and the Sathya Sai Organization (who accord this Discourse and three others pride of place on one of their websites).
Sathya Sai Baba makes a categorical and surely megalomaniacal claim (at the end of the Discourse), extraordinary even by his inflated standards:
“There is one point that I cannot but bring to your special notice today. At the moment when Jesus was merging in the Supreme Principle of Divinity, He communicated some news to his followers, which was interpreted in a variety of ways by commentators and those who relish the piling of writings on writings and meanings upon meanings, until it all swells up into a huge mess.”
“The statement itself has been manipulated and tangled into a conundrum. The statement of Christ is simple: ‘he who sent me among you will come again!’ and he pointed to a Lamb. The Lamb is merely a symbol, a sign. It stands for the Voice – Ba-Ba; the announcement was the Advent of Baba. ‘His Name will be Truth,’ Christ declared. Sathya means Truth. ‘He will wear a robe of red, a blood-red robe.’ [Here Baba pointed to the robe He was wearing.] ‘He will be short, with a crown (of hair). The Lamb is the sign and symbol of Love.’
But that is not all. Sathya Sai Baba adds that he is not just Christ, but God the Father:
“Christ did not declare that he will come again. He said, ‘He who made me will come again.’ That Ba-ba is this Baba and Sai, the short, curly-hair-crowned red-robed Baba, is come. He is not only in this Form, but he is in every one of you, as the dweller in the Heart. He is there, short, with a robe of the colour of the blood that fills it.” (Sathya Sai Speaks, XI, 54:346)
“The great teachers belong to mankind. It is wrong to believe that Jesus belongs only to the Christians and that Christmas is a holy festival for the West only. To accept one of them as one’s own and discard the rest as belonging to others is a sign of pettiness. Christ, Rama, Krishna – they are for all men everywhere.” (XI, 54:338)
To see the ignorance and confusion of Sathya Sai Baba about the historical Jesus and Christianity in general, see Brian Steel’s academic analyses here.

The following striking comparisons between some aspects of Sai Baba and Jesus of Nazareth were made by Barry Newton of Australia (ex-devotee):-
Jesus had no fears at all, nor bodyguards in the face of vigorous objection to His tirades directed at the temple priests, and even during his arrest showed the most divine loving compassion when he healed the severed ear of the Roman soldier who was there to arrest Him at His betrayal. Yet armed guards are everywhere in Sai Baba’s ashram.
Jesus spoke by His actions, the like of which no number of words could describe, yet we were very often warned in the Sathya Sai Organisation that “the hollow vessel makes the most noise.” Funny that, because Sai Baba and all but a very rare few in the Sathya Sai Organization talk lots and do little (actually nothing).
Jesus had no home and fed the multitudes, yet Sai Baba lives in luxury while the villagers outside the ashram live in squalor and obviously go hungry.”
Jesus chose to be among the outcasts of society – publicans, prostitutes, tax collectors, the sick and despised, yet Sai Baba invariably interviews the obviously well off, wealthy, or important, and the ashram is walled off from the villagers outside.
Jesus traveled to all parts of the land and to different countries to give the benefit of His presence and message, yet Sai Baba will not leave his native area.”
Jesus’ life was open for all to witness at all times, yet Sai Baba has two appearances of around twenty minutes a day only.
Jesus ate with whomever offered food, Sai Baba eats specially prepared meals away from all in private.
Jesus healed the sick in open view of all, Sai Baba does not.(There are reports that some sick people in the village of Puttaparthi say that they are not allowed into the so called free “Super Specialty Hospital”, and were too afraid to go there even after a devotee offered to accompany them. Actions such as these speak far more convincingly and louder than the innumerable talks on such topics as the five human values).
Jesus said (aphorism #5, Gospel of Thomas) “Know what is in front of your face, and what is hidden from you will be disclosed to you. For there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed.” and (aphorism #40, Gospel of Thomas) “A grapevine has been planted away from the father. Since it is not strong, it will be pulled up by the root and will perish.”

Image from screen capture of Radio Sai propaganda
but only in some few things, evidently!
Many Sai Baba devotees say that he is Jesus, and Sai Baba himself told Peggy Mason and Ron Laing that he is the Cosmic Christ. (in their book ‘The Embodiment of Love’ in the chapter ‘The Second Coming has Come’ p. 149-160, See also here). Of course, there are thousands who have claimed to be Christ and even now many are in psychiatric care in Jerusalem and elsewhere around the world. However, when Hislop had identified Sai Baba with Jesus in a talk, Sai told him not to confuse devotees, that Sai Baba and Jesus are different persons. Sathya Sai Baba has also claimed in a discourse to be Jesus’ Holy Father, the one who sent Jesus to earth etc.! It is evident that he has very considerable difficulties in explaining himself in all this, and the amazingly ignorant howlers he has stated concerning Jesus through the years rob him of all credibility on the subject. (see the academic Brian Steel’s analysis of Sai Baba on Jesus under ‘Christmas Declarations’)
Various other Sai-devotee authors (eg. Victor Kanu) have tried to show the similarity between the teachings of Sai Baba and Jesus. Interestingly and typically, none of these writings contain source references either to the Bible or to Sai Baba’s discourses and some contain quotes that are not even correct. Incidentally, such similarities can also, of course, be shown between the teachings of hundreds of Indian and other spiritual figures and Jesus. That Sai Baba plagiarises the actual words of spiritual figures without acknowledgement (such as Gandhi, Vivekananda, Shivananda, Ramana Maharshi etc.) has been proven, and he has evidently also taken much from the scriptures on Jesus, sometimes in garbled fashion as if filtered to him through the conversation of a third person more literate than himself, such as Prof. N. Kasturi. However, the apologists for Sai Baba always conveniently neglect the large discrepancies between Jesus and Sai Baba in both word and action. Perhaps most significant is that Jesus was never widely and credibly accused of child abuse, pedophilia or sexual abuses against boys and young men, nor was he in any way involved in a governmentally quashed murder case.

My close friend and Sai Baba’s close servitor, V.K. Narasimhan (former top Indian journalist), gave me a straightforward account of what he knew about the events of June 6th 1993. Otherwise I would still have believed Sai Baba and his various accomplices in the ashram and the Central Trust to be innocent of involvement. But they were not! I guarantee on my honour that what follows is an accurate report from my notes made the same day. When in private I asked Narasimhan, in January 1996, what he thought had occurred because I had heard various highly conflicting accounts. He replied: “they did a terrible thing”, referring to Sai Baba’s henchmen and using those exact words. Top ashram officials and Central Trust members, and particularly Sai Baba’s younger brother, Janakiramiah, blackmailed the police, when they at long last arrived on the scene, into shooting the four intruders in cold blood, and to claim it was in self-defence.
Narasimhan repeated a conversation he had been present to later on when Jankiramaiah – Sai Baba’s younger brother – was talking about the incident with “a very high official in the Indian Government”, who was then the Indian Home Minister, S.B. Chavan. Janakiramiah always held and publicly announced via the press that the intruders into the temple who killed two attendants who tried to stop them gaining entry had really intended to assassinate Sathya Sai Baba! [Yet Sai Baba has denied this vehemently in public!]
V.K.N. told me in a lowered voice that S.B. Chavan had congratulated Janakiramiah on having had the four intruders shot by the police and one of them commented “Dead men tell no tales”, whereupon they actually laughed together. Narasimhan was very shocked. When one considers his position at that time, it is easy to see how powerless he was to stand up and announce what he knew. His life would almost certainly have been in danger.
VK Narasimhan, whose word I just cannot doubt on this, also told me how the ashram/Central Trust authorities were able to blackmail the police into executing by shooting the four youths who had knifed to death Baba’s two attendants… and they used it! Learning all this to be indisputable fact shook my view of everything around Sai Baba worse than anything before, but – due to my comittment to Sai Baba and his works then – I could not absorb it and fully accept the obvious implications for several years. Armed only with knives, the youths could have been disarmed or – at worst – shot to disable them, if they had actually threatened the police.
See ‘Shocking Revelations from V. K. Narasimhan’ http://www.saibaba-x.org.uk/16/VKN_faith_shaking_events.html Also see here https://robertpriddy.wordpress.com/2007/05/29/sathya-sai-baba-bedroom-murders-fifth-part/.
Janakiramiah was thereafter elevated by Sathya Sai to a position on the Sathya Sai Central Trust – even though he had for many years been banned even from entering the ashram by Sathya Sai. When Janakiramiah met his end, – having become a multi-millionaire through property speculation in Puttaparthi (and oft-reported as running the brothel opposite the main ashram entrance!), Sai Baba made a great fuss over the loss, and reportedly broke down in public, more or less.
See below some excerpts from a long e-mail originating from ‘Rita’ (Bruce?) which was forwarded to me [—–Original Message—– From: luis marquez [mailto:email@example.com]
“The body was soon brought to their village house (a few houses before the birthplace of Swami, the Siva temple) where pandemonium reigned. I didn’t go there, but I saw the events on the local TV channel: pathetic scenes of his poor wife falling on the body and crying, and of his son sobbing uncontrollably. The body was already alarmingly swollen and bloated. Hundreds of people then filed past the body.”
“Swami had cleverly organised a function to hold people’s attention! Swami came about 3:30 PM to the Darshan hall”. … “Swami indicated that He, too, wanted to speak!”
“First Swami sang the poem about the greatness of Indian women, ironically starting with the line about how Savitri brought her dead husband back to life! His voice faltered with emotion several times. Swami then began talking about the power of God that is in man, and how one such great Shakti was Janakiram! He said that although Janakiram may have had harsh speech, inside his heart was soft and calm. He repeated this several times.””Then He immediately started talking about how Rama felt when his beloved brother Lakshmana fainted on the battlefield. Rama said, “How can I ever find a brother like you? It is not possible!” Swami went on; several times His voice cracked and fathered, and two or three times He had to stop mid-sentence because He actually started to sob! It was a heart-rending moment, the closest Swami has ever come to outright, real crying.”

Sathya Sai Baba wants his followers to quash social contacts and reduce friendships. Why?
Sai Baba has spoken out frequently against developing social contacts or friendships at the ashrams, and especially intimate relationships (not surprisingly, considering his extremely traditional views on the relations between the sexes). But some normal contact is almost inevitable with both Indians and people from all other parts of the world. There are, it seems more and more likely, unspoken reasons for Sai Baba’s trying to reduce social contacts to a minimum and enforce silence whenever possible and repeatedly warn people against talking unless strictly necessary! There is a great deal which is covered up and it takes many years and chance discoveries for most people to begin to know the depth of the deceits practiced by Sai Baba and his officials,.
What kind of followers does Sai Baba have?
Since 1984 I met a number of sensible and good persons in the Sai movement, some fairly prominent in their walks of life, and some of them well educated… some were helpful, solicitous and generous minded, but this was definitely not the case with the majority! Those persons named as ‘professors’ by Sathya Sai, whether engaged at his educational institutions, whether Indian or from abroad, have not in general impressed me in any way (I was already professionally acquainted with too many unimpressive academic professors anyhow). There are no well-known scientists or international educators among them, as far as I could discover. To give just one example, Sathya Sai himself introduced me in 1986 to a history professor at his university, a Mr. Krishnamurthi, who turned out to be a highly impressionable man who believed some of the Indian myths in the Mahabharata to be literal factual accounts and who had very simplistic ideas about European philosophy. All the teachers who work for Sai Baba believe in his supposed miracles, and often the most unlikely and absurd accounts too!
My friend V.K. Narasimhan, Sai Baba’s close servitor through two decades, rather shocked me when he told me that not one Sai student he knew (and he knew most of them) was capable of any independent thought, due to the system of learning-by-heart (not head!”).
I could not help but become aware through personal contacts that Sathya Sai certainly draws a disproportionate number of people of little spiritual understanding, both as regards knowledge and insight and also in so as far as their behaviour spoke. One may argue that it is necessary for Sathya Sai to attract a great many who need to be changed, or to change themselves, if the world is to become a better place. It is evident from his discourses, in which he repeatedly propounds moral values at a level and in a way suited to the understanding of those lacking in proper fellow-feeling, personal honesty and common decency. Some of these people are also given privileges and high positions by him, which many of us have also experienced happens in the selections of higher office-bearers in the Sai organisation by Sathya Sai.
Sai Baba selects as his favourites those who have blind faith in him, will believe everything he says, never question anything and actively partake in cover-up operations!

What is deceitfulness and duplicity?
It is to denounce people in public with an angry face, beating the lectern while so doing, and later to say: “There is no trace of anger or hatred in Me and hence everyone loves Me” (Sanathana Sarathi September 2002, page 257f) Well, “everyone” is extremely far from the truth! Does he really imagine in his intense, protected, narcissism those who have been deeply abused by him love him? Or the 5 billion-plus people who have heard nothing about him? (Date: 10-11-02)Sathya Sai in word and deed
Teachings and consequences: Sai Baba preaches that there must be unity between thought, word, and deed… also that thoughts must be good and words true. He repeatedly fails to measure up to this standard himself, as anyone who dares think a genuinely independent thought can discover. Just take, for example, his 2003 Guru Purnima discourse, as edited down in Sanathana Sarathi (August 2003, p. 229):-–
“People are heroes in speech but zeroes in action. Today the world is being duped by such people. Those who have true love in their heart will not indulge in tall talk. They demonstrate their love in action. Today people speak a lot without translating their speech into action. Such people verily are thieves. They demonstrate their love in action. Today people speak a lot without translating their speech into action. Such people verily are thieves.”
Let’s take a closer look
“People are heroes in speech but zeroes in action.”
Sai Baba makes himself the ultimate hero in speech after speech. His own personal actions are observable, walking about, smiling,”, putting his hand on things and people. He does nothing one could really call hard work, he rather goes around accepting adulation.
“Today the world is being duped by such people”
Like faking “materialisations” of vibuthi through sleight of hand, and of cheap trinkets (claimed to be valuable) and imported watches etc. etc. Like telling many untruths (documented in these and many other web pages) and making self-contradictory statements galore.
“Those who have true love in their heart will not indulge in tall talk.”
Is not his having boasted that no one anywhere is doing even one thousandth of the work he does (Xmas 2000) talk tall? If not it must be low talk! His repeated self-praise is spread on thick in virtually all he says and does. Moreover, there are many forms of love, and many forms of action… many of Sai Baba’s “loving actions’ have been described by many young men on the Internet and in TV interviews.
“Today people speak a lot without translating their speech into action.”
How many hundreds of millions of words has Sai Baba poured forth… shelves buckle under books containing only a fraction of his discourses, and even they are but excerpts… while his followers do over 99% of all the actions he claims to his sole credit.
“Such people verily are thieves”
Those who collect donations under false pretences, using sleight of hand, pretend to create and give away genuine diamonds (when donations will be given in return) and many other such deceits are the thieves.
Then there is the continual ‘Me, Me, Me’ in all Sai Baba’s discourses. Just look and see in any volume… yet he tells us he is selfless, needs no praise and that speaking of one’s good deeds makes them as if valueless. He certainly provides a mountain of self-praise and talk about “My” work, achievements etc.! That anyone cannot see this deceit would be incredible, but for the tremendous, subtle brain-washing that people undergo and engaged in themselves without realising it.
Sathya Sai Baba’s actions most evidently no longer fit in with all that he says about himself as regards his total purity, human perfection, freedom from all lust etc., if they ever did. His fine words may apply to Divine Consciousness, but evidently not to the body and mind of Sai Baba which it supposedly inhabits. Baba always says ‘I am not the body’, which can also be taken as a denial of any connection with what he as ‘his body’ does. This is the nux of the split personality hypothesis, applicable to such psychically powerful figures… a kind of Rasputin syndrome. At all events, Sathya Sai Baba is the name of his physical form, that human being embodiment, as much as any that of super-conscious, transcendental entity.

Sathya Sai Baba and ‘miracle cures’
The hagiographic literature about Sathya Sai Baba’s ‘miraculous’ cures is extensive. Due to the nature of his alleged ‘methods’, no scientific control study has so far been made of any of the claims of miraculous healing from him, either spontaneously or in answer to prayers. He is also reported as carrying out ‘exorcisms’ or driving out demons from ‘possessed’ persons and ‘psychic surgery’. None of this is to say that he, like thousands of others of reported ‘healers’, cannot have been somehow involved in people’s healing processes, most likely as a catalytic agent on whom one concentrates deeply with faith and hope and projects any positive results if or when improvements occur. (For a deeper analysis of these matters, see here)
On the other hand, hundreds of reports have come from persons who have sacrificed and prayed to Sathya Sai Baba constantly for themselves or for another, but all of whom have only got worse! Of course, the handy theory of past bad karma is trundled out to explain away the possibility of a cure in this or that persons’ instance. All evidence that Sathya Sai Baba does not heal, does not keep his word, or is not able to heal people of himself has to be refuted by the ‘true believer’, whose agenda is totally to block out all experience that may lead to another explanation or in any way be interpreted to reduce their hard-held belief that Sathya Sai Baba is a divine healer and God himself.
Even devotees who feel the need to keep up a front despite themselves not having been healed according to Sathya Sai Baba’s promise will convince themselves that they have been helped… and even lie about this, such as Mrs. Phyllis Krystal did about the headaches she claimed Sai Baba cured her of (after being asked point blank in public at the 1990 Sai Baba conference in Hamburg). However, she was still suffering from them for years afterwards, as Lucas Ralli (with whom she stayed when in London) informed me most definitively and to my great surprise. Sathya Sai Baba is one among many thousands who claims the power to heal – claims which of course have never been substiantiated by serious medical researchers under controlled conditions – a list which includes many known and highly controversial names: Mary Baker Eddy, Edgar Cayce, Chico Xavier, José (Zé) Arigó, Yokoshiaki Omura, Billy Graham, Oral Roberts, Kathryn Kuhlman, Peter Popoff, Benny Hinn and Peter Younggren, Stephen Turoff and so on and on…

Self-deceptions and suppressed consciences
Among the supposed millions of Sai devotees who have not left him they know – or are now in a position to know – many of the credible descriptions of his sexual abuses and deceptions on a grand scale. However, they have long since learned to discount in advance and rationalize everything that is or could be said against him, on principle and regardless of the facts or the truth of the issues. Every fact must be twisted and turned to fit Sai Baba’s claims, until it becomes second nature and on can no longer think straight (if one has not succeeded in not thinking at all, as Sai Baba recommends most highly! Actually an impossibility, as he even self-defeatingly admitted to Hislop once!).
The reasons for the split-mindedness of devotees are many and various: powerful mental-emotional bonds that give a sense of security and one can hardly free oneself from, dependency attachments to other members, to prestige and privileges within the cult, to having a flat at the ashram, to cheap living in India, spiritual desperation, continual hope of cures and freedom from sufferings, vague ideas of ‘liberation’ from life itself, and so on… Their lives and psyches are just too involved at so many levels in their fixation on this very personable and powerful gurus for them to be able to listen to, investigate or evaluate facts.
Among those to whom this applies are many Indian politicians, now the new President of India Mrs. Pratibha Patil – the hopelessly outdated old lady and Sai devotee related to an unscrupulous husband who is under a cloud of suspicions, she is a compromise UPA rubber stamp candidate. L.K. Advani claims she illegally protected her brother in a murder case! So she would not mind supporting Sai Baba’s famous murder cover-up either then! Altogether, her reputation reminds rather strongly of that of Sathya Sai as regards cover-ups!
Patil has been buffeted by accusations that she protected her brother in a murder probe and shielded her husband in a suicide scandal. There have also been charges of nepotism and involvement in a slew of financial scams. The opposition also issued a booklet entitled: “Does This Tainted Person Deserve to Become the President of India?” (see www.iol.co.za)
The soon-to-be ex-President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam also visited and endorsed Sai Baba, as does the PM Manmohan Singh, the Home Minister and plenty of others. This is a tragedy for India, for the world will never accept India’s self-proclaimed God Incarnate, Father who sent Jesus and all the rest of that megalomaniacal narcissism… even though India’s leaders insist he is genuine! The fact is, Indian politicians are worried about votes from the masses of deceived peasants and middle-class Indians who support Sathya Sai Baba in Andhra Pradesh (even up to 10% of the population by some liberal estimates!).

Most people tend to assume that an omniscient God Incarnate would be, among many other things, an immensely towering knowledgeable mind. In most of his teachings, however, Sathya Sai Baba does not measure up to even a very modest intellectual standard. To make himself seem educated (which he is not), it suits his purpose to use the names of scientists like Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, when he is not denigrating scientists’ and scholars as “educated fools”. He even mentions physicists like Heisenberg (who he claims sought to unify science and spirituality!), and Dirac (who he says found the truth ‘Love ever, hurt never’!!). He speaks of ‘”the great scientist Darwin” but only to say he was influenced by his teacher! Actually he denies Darwinian natural selection because he teaches creationism – and adds tha it was he himself who created everything!
So Sai Baba demonstrates throughout that he has less than an elementary understanding of what they stood for. His references to historical and other objective facts, including other religions (especially Christianity) – are invariably very patchy, often garbled and inaccurate and sometimes hair-raisingly absurd. His quotations from famous figures like Churchill are inaccurate and sometimes laughably distorted! It is clear he only knows of these people at a considerable remove from the sources, such as via his former devotees Prof. Kasturi and Dr. Bhagavantam. Instead, the lion’s share of his teaching is a simplified version of well-worn religious moralism and speculative ideas about reality and God that have been put by many others before him, mostly in much more nuanced and clear ways than he manages.
The modern world’s hard-won and vast intellectual and scientific achievements are often challenged by Sai Baba in quite scathing terms and those who have sacrificed much to make great academic and scientific efforts are supposed to feel despondent to hear Sathya Sai Baba explaining how futile it all was. Actually, though, it is Sathya Sai Baba who signally fails the test of ‘the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth’.

Public works done with full publicity
All publicity about the service works of the various Sathya Sai Baba organisations or institutions is specifically formulated so as to try to enhance his name and fame. The works in India and the input of all the genuine workers involved are certainly valuable contributions to a population which is overwhelmingly poor and without a small fraction of the public services available in most countries of the world today. Though these Sai service workers labour under the illusion that it is Sai Baba who is the real ‘doer’ of the work and that they are merely his instruments, without them it is clear that absolutely zero work would be done!
What deserves criticism here is the way in which Sathya Sai Baba, who is known to be a major deceiver of his followers, takes all credits and trumpets himself through everything he can! One is left without a shred of doubt as to who is supposedly the main benefactor. For example, the hospital in Puttaparthi has been publicized for all it is worth in every video allowed by the Sai authorities for years, where huge portraits of Sai Baba are seen everywhere and the commentaries drip with condensed sugar water when mentioning him. But it was the US owner of Hard Rock Café, Isaac Tigrett – but he is now not mentioned officially. This is probably due to the intense jealousy he has described from Indian Sai officials when he was put in charge of hospital planning by Sai Baba. Tigrett’s name has even been completely removed from the reprinted discourses in the Sathya Sai Speaks series, though his name was included when they were originally published in Sanathana Sarathi.. [His donation of US$49 million made it all possible (while $15 million ‘disappeared’ according to what Tigrett told David Bailey when they were still both devotees! Note also that Isaac Tigrett has continued his devotion to Sai Baba and declared on the BBC film that he believes the sex abuse allegations are true and it would not matter to him if Sai were to go out and murder someone!]
If there should be no publicity, why do so many officially blessed and widely advertised Sai videos contain long sequences of Sai Baba feeding the poor, marrying off poor people, giving away hand-driven tricycles to the handicapped, sewing machines to women and so on. They never were his property to give, if we are to believe his claims to non-ownership of anything. The video ‘Song of Service’ is one example and another such is ‘Sai Baba as in a mirror’. These are sold world-wide and, from the central leadership, efforts are urged from devotees to bring such public works to the attention of broadcasters and the media. In 2001, the Sai Central Trust took a double page spread in a Bangalore newspaper to promote the SSSS Hospital there. (The hospital was not even mentioned editorially by the newspaper, however).
Sai Baba’s teaching that service (seva) is of no spiritual value if it seeks the limelight just does not fit with such publicity. For example, In Sathya Sai Speaks Vol. 28, p. 341, Sai Baba says one should not do service to impress. In Vol. 1 he deplores”the egoism and poisons the Seva of even veterans in the field, who go about extolling themselves as founders and promoters” (p.97) Does he not extol himself as a founder and promoter? In a book he wrote – Jnana Vahini – Sai Baba criticises “self-aggrandisement; when self holds sway over the heart, no deed worthy to be styled Service can emanate.” (p.34).
So what about Sai Baba’s self-aggrandisement?
Compare the unlimited self-centeredness of what Sai Baba calls ‘My’ water projects and his repeated detailing of how ‘He’ did it with, say, Bob Geldof’s world-famous Food for Ethiopia projects and his praise of all the donors and taking no credit other than ‘it was my good luck to be there at the right time and place’! Does it become ‘The’ God avatar constantly to put himself on a mighty pedestal and take all the credit for everything good, while denying any of his demonstrable —failings? Sai Baba’s continued declarations and clear directives insist that the Sathya Sai Organization is not to seek publicity other than through the example of the good behaviour and selfless work done by the devotees who are its members. He has time and again insisted that any kind of self-advertising is entirely foreign to the true spirit of selfless service. But he is the greatest sinner as to putting himself forward as the greatest selfless helper of mankind… this is the narcissistic blindness and unquestioned self-righteous yet self-defeating rubbish that only a ruler totally isolated within a court of spineless sychophants can achieve!

Unofficial but true information for persons considering visiting Sai Baba ashrams
It is important that someone with personal experience and confidential contacts, at least, presents some of the many undisclosed facts about Sathya Sai Baba’s ashrams, where the control of public information is very tight, well-censored and is maintained by insidiously strong social taboos on what can and can’t be said or told. Since I have had plenty of personal experience of the life of the ashrams and knew some very well-informed confidential contacts, besides keeping copious notes every day, I try to do my share. I leave the rosy writings to others now, having done too much more than a bit on that front before I became disillusioned!I was once mislead badly enough to believe that Sai Baba would never have a deceitful washerwoman or coolie in the ashram… they would all be spiritual due to their proximity to God Himself! When several pieces of my clothing has been stolen by a washerwoman, I carefully inquired of the public relations officials. They told me that all the washerwomen and coolies are thieves and liars! As time went on I learned that the proclaimed policy of ‘first come, first served’ is not practiced. There are many people who obtain privileges of many kinds… to jump queues, obtaining chits for a special place at darshan, obtaining favoured accommodation, often in return for favours to staff (including bribery). The so called ‘special guests’, referred to generally and treated as ‘VIPs’ can walk to the front of food queues ahead of cripples and the blind, and they use this privilege constantly, though there seldom any reason for their haste. This is a cause for envy in many, but this is not at all what motivates this account! I mention this because Sai Baba-devotees believe that all who criticise Sai Baba are merely envious, jealous etc., as Sai Baba himself insists! (Presumably he imagines – or even hopes – that all are envious of his blessings!).
The pleading faces and begging postures of devotees – not least Westerners and a number of the VIPs themselves – shows how true after all were Sai Baba’s words about the majority of people coming for something they want from him. Some have gained favours by sitting inordinate lengths of time in the ‘lines’ before darshan to get a prominent place (regardless of others whom they thereby displace) month after month until Sai Baba could hardly fail to reward them without seeming very hard-hearted to all those who observe these sad cases. The thousands of hours of discomfort they undergo – and their blank faces or often piteous expressions in front of Sai Baba – says at least as much about their level of desperation and dependency as their faith. They continue this behaviour when they are made VIPs too! The fixation one observes in them and others shows what a personality cult the Sai Baba movement really is. Those who strive in all ways to become important in the movement are mostly self-important, self-seeking and often uncivil persons who I would definitely have avoided entirely had I not then been a devotee… they mostly recall the phrase, ‘fools rush in where angels fear to tread’.

More ‘omniscient ignorance’ and bombast from Sathya Sai Baba
Sai Baba also pretends to be able to do the impossible, making the most unfulfillable promises (so as to get cheers from his audience?), as in his discourse 11/8/2001:
“Unfortunately today in this country there are many fatherless and motherless children in great distress. My resolve is to help such children by providing them proper amenities by way of houses, education etc., and mould them into ideal citizens (cheers). I have spoken about this to the local District Collector. He has agreed to help and has allocated some land for this purpose. The construction has to be commenced shortly. There is nothing hidden in My actions. My nature is not to amass riches but to help all the extent possible. Bring to My notice any such deserving orphan or fatherless child. If the mother is alive, I shall arrange to allocate one lakh rupees in her name to be kept in fixed deposit for the upbringing of the children until they are able to support themselves.”
For this self-proclaimed ‘omniscient God’, he should know a whole lot better! He is surrounded by luxury and the well-to-do, who he has cultivated with gifts of cheap false ‘diamond rings’ etc. for decades. But he is evidently in blissful ignorance of the constantly prevailing conditions of massive poverty, malnutrition and hunger in India, as the following words of his make crystal clear:
“I came across a tragic incident in a newspaper. It was about an uneducated and helpless mother and her three children. They were in such a pathetic state of poverty that the mother had to starve herself in order to feed her children. As their situation worsened, she took to the extreme step of committing suicide after poisoning her children. It’s a shame on the Bharatiyas! Can we Bharatiyas be so stone-hearted and cruel as to allow such a painful event to take place?” –
Considering the number of orphans in India, can Sai Baba’s boast be other than hypocrisy? In 2002, the World Bank estimated that India is facing an accelerating threat from HIV which greatly impacts the social fabric, especially though the unprecedented number of orphans left with little or no adult protection. (See here)
Sathya Sai does not know the basic facts about his own country. Yet he entertains and blesses all his nation’s corrupt and nest-feathering politicians as soon as they pop up at his ashrams. According to UN statistics, there are 20 million child labourers in sweatshops and mines who get no education. Indian government extrapolations of this 1981 data place the current number of child labourers at between seventeen and twenty million (Human Rights Watch 1996, 122). This extrapolation seems highly unlikely as: “The Official National Sample Survey of 1983 [of India] reports 17.4 million child labourers, while a study . . . sponsored by the Labour Ministry, concluded that the child-labour force was 44 million” (Weiner 1991, 20-21). UNICEF “cites figures ranging from seventy-five to ninety million child laborers under the age of fourteen” (Human Rights Watch 1996, 122). A universal difficulty in obtaining accurate data may be that individuals fail to report child labour participation during surveys, for fear of persecution. (see here). UN statistics shows that there are 4 million suffering HIV/AIDS in India, of which 170,000 are children! (See here) . Further, 400,000 children and women in India are subjected to commercial sexual exploitation – see here. –
Though Sai Baba in his bullet- and bomb-proof limousine and in his secretly commando-defended private apartments may be unaware of the extent of it, the world in general knows that India is still full of the homeless, of slum cities, beggars of every kind and the land where the degradation of human beings exceeds all limits. Most ‘Bharitayas’ (i.e. Indians) are inured to it, on the pavements they daily step across limbless mendicants deformed horribly in childhood into broken-legged ‘spidermen’ and head-narrowed ‘rat-headed children’ and other pitiful shapes and forms – for the purposes of begging. Many who give some pittance to them do so because it supposedly engenders good karma for themselves! Is the problem that no one is left around him with the guts to bring anything untoward to the attention of the imperious, conceited Sathya Sai?

Sathya Sai Baba boasts about ‘his’ mission and achievements more than any previous figure of the kind he wishes to be recognised as – holy and selfless. The wannabe Nobel Laureate is still also wishing to have his name associated with that of the Duke of Edinburgh! Any kind of association will do to draw the wool over his devotees’ eyes, it seems! His publicists (with Dr. G. Venkataraman as chief spin doctor) have claimed that he was awarded the Duke of Edinburgh Award – which is a blatant lie, even though a certificate was made out in his name by a youth in UK who partook in the award scheme (thousands are awarded this certificate anyhow). The matter was raised with the Duke of Edinburgh’s staff and they demanded that the Sathya Sai authorities removed this false publicity from their website. They did so, but have reintroduced it in publishing on their official website the edition of ‘Sanathana Sarathi’ containing announcement of the award to Sri Sathya Sai! They have to sneak in this way to make Sai Baba to appear to have won even such a commonly given youth award! At an official dinner after the furore, the Duke of Edinburgh’s top executive assured our contact there that no such further mistake will ever be made! The issue of false representation was covered internationally in the press, after an article appeared in The Guardian (see here).
That the award is given most liberally to participants in the vast Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme is shown by the fact that there is now an official website called “Find old friends from The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award with Friends Reunited“. However, Sathya sai Baba has not been listed there – and we can safely say a registration on his behalf will not be accepted.
This is only another move in Sathya Sai Baba’s totally immodest attempts to become world famous and recognised by the high and mighty of this world. The materials proving this is very considerable – see here and here and here

This year the prominent journals Science and Nature have received the Prince of Asturias Foundation award Compare the quality, outreach and depth of research and understanding in these journals with that exhibited by Sathya Sai Baba’s monthly journal ‘Sanathana Sarathi‘, which is packed full of his handed-down superstitions, endlessly repetitive religious mythology in Sai Baba’s self-promoting and strongly moralising rants (i.e. he calls them ‘discourses’!). Sai Baba’s fantastic claims and predictions (http://home.no.net/abacusa/SaiBaba.htm) are as much an international laughing-stock as in any other fundamentalist cultist teaching (see here). What an enormous difference in lucidity, factuality, usefulness, openness, intelligence, testability and critical thinking between this and almost any international science or cultural journal!
While I was a follower and before I became aware of the huge deceits being practiced by Sai Baba and his inner circle, both the editor of Sanathana Sarathi – V.K. Narasimhan – and I were aware of the low quality of the discourses. The numerous problems posed by Sai Baba’s teachings, his self-contradictory words, factual inaccuracy and major blunders, caused Narasimhan to keep asking me to interpret some to reconcile them with one another. I therefore wrote numerous articles there – mea culpa.
Now, the Asturias awards promote a very different standard of achievement to that of Sai Baba’s uneducated preaching ‘teaching’, as the following indicates well enough, I submit:-
Conferred annually since 1981 the awards are intended to acknowledge scientific, technical, cultural, social and humanitarian work carried out internationally by individuals, groups or organisations in the following eight categories: communication and humanities, social sciences, arts, letters, scientific and technical research, international cooperation, concord and sports – has never been given to Sathya Sai Baba or any of his followers. Instead it has gone to writers such as Álvaro Mutis, Francisco Umbral, Mario Vargas Llosa, Camilo José Cela, Günter Grass, Doris Lessing, Arthur Miller or Claudio Magris; politicians such as Václav Havel, Jacques Delors, Adolfo Suárez, Mijail Gorbachov, Nelson Mandela, Isaac Rabin, H.M. King Hussein of Jordan or Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva; institutions such as the United Nation´s High Commission for Refugees, Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca (the Guatemalan National Revolutionary Movement), Médicos Sin Fronteras (Doctors without Borders) and Medicus Mundi, the Sephardic Community, the American Foundation for Aids Research (founded and led by Elizabeth Taylor) and CNN; scientists such as Stephen Hawking, the Atapuerca Research Team, Santiago Grisolía, Guido Münch, Robert Gallo and Luc Montagnier, the human world´s leading research teams in the field of the human genome, the fathers of Internet or Jane Goodall; historians such as John Elliott or Julio Caro Baroja, intellectuals such as Julián Marías, Indro Montanelli, George Steiner, Umberto Eco, Hans M. Enzensberger or Jürgen Habermas; artists such as Antoni Tàpies, Óscar Niemeyer, Joaquín Rodrigo, Vittorio Gassmann, Barbara Hendricks, Woody Allen and Miquel Barceló.
Sathya Sai Baba has never won any international award we can discover. Nonetheless, it was made known that his ‘holy’ name was actually submitted by the Vajpayee Indian Government for the Nobel Peace Prize (such wishful and politically naive thinking!). For Sathya Sai Baba supports the vastly increasing militarism and nuclear arsenal of the Indian Government through patronising the designer of atomic weapons (Dr. Bhagavantam, deceased) and hobnobbing in friendly fashion in public with the designer of the latest nuclear delivery missiles – President Kalam. Despite this, some inconsequential relative of Alfred Nobel (who thus bears the same surname) has pronounced that Sai Baba ought to get the Nobel Prize, which suggestion followers trumpeted to the firmament repeatedly. A pathetic attempt to draw attention to their self-proclaimed God Incarnate, who – despite all the billions of dollars in hand – has not made one inch of progress in getting international recognition from any serious institutions. UNESCO has – as is well known – washed its hands of him and has since it posted its advisory on him never accepted invitations to partake in his self-glorifying ‘conferences on education’.
The human values and moral standing of anyone who is seriously considered for the Nobel peace Prize must be impeccable. However, Sathya Sai Baba has been more widely accused of sexual abuses in public than any comparable figure, but the Indian Government, being led by devotees of Sai Baba, has successfully quashed all court petitions against him – so far! Moreover, he was present to the murder of six of his devotees within his private apartment in June, 1993 and the case has never been cleared up, no court proceedings and politically quashed CBI investigations! The Nobel Committee has been fully apprised of these facts and – even were it to regard Sathya Sai Baba as having done anything to forward peace in the world other than to preach – the unresolved murders and uninvestigated sexual abuses would sink his candidature in advance. Then there was his warm appreciation of Dictator Idi Ami… just the ticket for a Nobel Peace Prize winner?
