India’s prophesied future world leadership?

Excerpt from Conversations with Sai Baba

The total transformation of India as an engine, not only of economic growth, but also as a shining moral example to the peoples of the world which would regenerate them all and introduce a new Golden Age has frequently been promised by Sathya Sai Baba, such as to the credulous Dr. J. Hislop of the USA. Sathya Sai Baba is India’s top living religious figure, who is worshipped by most of India’s Prime Ministers and Presidents since Indira Gandhi up to the present day (see some of Sai Baba’s preposterous claims here!).

Judge for yourself whether Sai Baba’s prophesies are proving to have ANY results. Consider how India has developed a major nuclear arsenal and a huge military machine – a threat to its neighbours. Does this give India the moral high ground? So much for the much vaunted non-violence policy and the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, on which most of India’s fame rested once! The social and economic inequality in India, despite its considerable present wealth, equals or surpasses anything on the globe today… and it denies many basic human rights to many of its minorities. Is this morally defensible?

We read; “India has had nearly 60 years free of famine, growing enough food for its 1.1 billion people. Yet nearly 40 percent of its vegetables rot in warehouses before reaching market. The country has a space program – yet 30 percent of the population lives on less than $1 a day; 78 percent on less than $2.” [Christian Science Monitor]. This leading US newspaper also comments on how much has been written about the incredible strides India has taken since 1991, when it opened up its markets to foreign investors and slashed regulations. A 6 or 8 % growth rate for a decade has made India attractive to investors, and the outsourcing and high-tech industries. However, the reverse side of this coin is that this economic progress is NOT benefiting 80% of India’s population. It is reported that “a growing number of foreign diplomats, Indian academics, and businesses warn that the booming growth will fizzle unless India acts soon to spread the benefits to a wider population and boost investment in roads and airports, electricity and water, and basic education.” One might mention the lack of public toilets throughout most of the cities and villages (except the open spaces, that is!) and the incredibly low levels of hygiene for the vast majority of Indians (which also stops any really effective tourist growth). What my friend V.K. Narasimhan famously wrote once still applies, the vast majority of the population have no social support of any kind, other than the sunlight!

Sai Baba’s failing health

Posted by robertpriddy on September 9, 2007

Sai Baba do-lally?

On this photo from around 2006, there was already a decidedly ga-ga look on Sai Baba’s face. Instead of the usual, where he cuts the ribbons, he is ‘assisted’ (he is actually holding onto the hand of his helper!). Likewise, videos also show him unable to cut his birthday cakes any longer.  Rumours that he is non compos mentis have become yet more persistent, having begun with accounts of his apparently senile behaviour already three years ago (including one from a recently-disaffected US resident in India who had been editing some of the Puttaparthi magazine ‘Sai Impressions’). He was heard to be giving instructions about events that were not scheduled and never took place, talking confusedly and sometimes garbling his words. It is Mrs. Geetha Reddu, the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Minister who is doing the honours of inaugurating the tourist complex in the above photo. No longer is Sai Baba against ‘spiritual tourism’ – as was so strongly formerly – and is even for out-and-out tourism and thus now also for his own direct involvement in Indian politics (see Sai Baba Sparks Political Furore) It is his powerful money and power instinct at work, no doubt! See this excerpt from an official Sai baba webpage which shows how Puttaparthi is being made a money earner through massive injection of public funds:-

Tourism Minister Geetha Reddy with Sai Baba

In the light of the likelihood that he is losing his marbles and may therefore be declared too unfit to give evidence, he may escape justice and having to face an Indian court for the allegations of child abuse, widespread sexual abuses, corruption and murder cover-up before his death. In any case, he has the full weight of the Indian government behind him, with devotees in Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and India’s President, Patil as the last in a long line of such luminaries who worship him. Among his most excessive aberrations from science and reason, Sai Baba believes in black magic (see here), spreads many fantastic rumours about his supposed miraculous powers (far exceeding anything heard of except from the Superman comics) and much else besides.

Puttaparthi properties, hotels and transport

The property boom around Sathya Sai Baba ashrams is one of the sustaining factors of the Sai movement, having become the nub of a wide range of dependent estate agencies and all the services and workers which these involve. Hotels close to the Prashanthi Nilayam ashram, such as Sai Towers, have become super rich. The village populations of both Puttaparthi and Whitefield have profited vastly by the letting of rooms and properties, since the flow of foreign visitors has grown to many thousands per month. The Andhra Pradesh State and also Central government have given huge sums to the improvement of facilities – road improvement and bus stations, an airport, a dedicated railway along with major promotion of Sathya Sai Baba and his ashrams as a tourist attraction. (Puttaparthi railway station, Puttaparthi Sai Airport). All this is a question of power and money, which is the dominant factor in Sathya Sai’s activities altogether these days, despite his pretence of being a virtual renunciant and disinterested in any money or property. His younger brother, Janakiramiah, who V.K. Narasimhan told me masterminded through blackmail the execution by police of four assailants who were trapped in Sai Baba’s bedroom,  made a vast fortune from property speculation in Puttaparthi. Sathya Sai took Jankiramiah on the multi-billion dollar tax-exempt Sathya Sai Central Trust directly after this! (Read more ).

All this is one of the most noticeable effects of the Advent of this self-claimed “Avatar of Vishnu” – to boost local business, tourist traffic and donations to his mini-empire… Is this how he is saving humanity from catastrophe (as he has claimed he will)?
