Sathya Sai Baba and the truth about God

Posted by robertpriddy on August 30, 2015

To get any understanding of an unknown phenomenon, we have to express what we think it may be in terms of known phenomena. But the supreme of unknowns – God – is constantly expressed in terms of equally unknown and intangible things…. omniscience, omnipotence,  heaven or hell, salvation, total realisation, omnipresence, infinity, everlasting time and so on.

Consequently, there is no chance of attaining to understanding – let alone definitive proof – of any supreme being. Sathya Sai Baba was smart enough to realise that, so he makes a virtue of the ineffable mystery! No one could plumb the nature of God (i.e. of himself) as it is ‘beyond anyone’s understanding’. One had to have unshaken belief, engage in lifelong prayer, repetition of names, visualisation of a divine form and other mind-dulling activities (with the exception of doing constant social service) if one were ever to ‘know’ God.

One has to have intense faith that these ways produce results and must practice them assiduously for anything up a lifetime, by which it is too late to do anything about it if one finds it does not lead to what it claimed. Sathya Sai Baba, despite his humongous claims and prophesies about himself, did not fulfil them, even dying after multiple organ failure and huge weight loss long before he stated he would.

It was a requirement in the Sathya Sai Organisation to believe that he was divine, omnipotent and omniscient. It depends on how you define omnipresence, or imagine it. There are lots of quotes about it by Sai Baba, but they do not make a coherent account. His close servitor, famous former newsman V.K. Narasimhan, was (mostly privately) adamant that he was neither all-knowing nor all-powerful. He could not state these views while he lived in the ashram as it was totally against what Sai Baba claimed and a vast majority of those who approached Sai Baba believed. (This is evident from years of talking to people about him at the ashrams, in Sai groups in Europe and in the entire hagiographic literature and countless former on-line discussions).

Those who follow many Hindu gurus (I cannot speak for all) exist in the mental equivalent of delirium, something they do not recognise for what it is because they have been entrapped from childhood in a multi-faceted sphere of unfounded beliefs, handed down superstitions, rituals and prohibitions. A large section of the Indian population share a culture of this kind, one which has counterparts in other mainstream religions, but hardly to the same degree (except in extreme sects).

Intense forms of worship, unreflecting absorption of beliefs and doctrines or supposedly ‘spiritual’ practices to enhance awareness of divinity or lead to self-realisation and transcendence of all worldly desires and ills, lead to a cognitive torpor from which release becomes ever more difficult. The motivation to wish to recognise or seek the situation and its root causes is soon absent and it may require a traumatic experience or major personal shocks to reverse the process of dependency on religious panaceas.

The attraction of the idea that there is a wonderful all-powerful, all good universal What-Not can in many people feel as compelling as the love of one’s mother and father, as the realisation of all one’s (good) dreams and even the instinct for survival (especially after death, preferably in some unknown heaven). History demonstrates that this is one of the greatest weaknesses of humanity, causing endless confusion, delusion, individual suffering, and the horrors of conflicts and the devastation of religiously-inspired wars.

9/11 Twin Towers attack and Sathya Sai Baba’s claimed intervention!

The official Sathya Sai Organization International Chairman Dr. Goldstein affronts the 9/11 victims’ memory by claiming that Sathya Sai Baba intervened to save his members’ lives (but not those of others)!

In a meeting in St. Louis in which Sathya Sai Baba’s birthday was celebrated on the wrong day – namely, 11th September -, the Sai Organization tried to use that terrortist attack tragedy to promote their guru!
Sathya Sai Baba always held that everything is The will of God, and further, that he was the godhead, the Deity even of all deities and often said with “all power is in my hand”. Interestingly, the terrorists who caused the WordlTrade Centre and pentagon disaster were intense believers in God and an afterlife… once can reflect fruitfully on what that implies if one has a truly inquiring mind.

In a live TV programme on Zona de Investigacion (Azul TV, Argentina), Dr. Michael Goldstein is reported on by the Argentinian journalist and TV director, Agnostelli as follows: Dr. Michael Goldstein “gave some news that left the sweating audience mute: “On September 11, the devotees that worked at the Twin Towers and the Pentagon didn’t go to work that day or were late getting to their jobs. Thanks to our beloved Bhagavan,’ pontificated Goldstein, ‘all the New York and Washington devotees are safe.’ I shuddered to think that the public might applaud the news. But nobody did. Baba’s divine powers only benefit those faithful to him, or was this news passed on to avoid more desertions?”

In the same programme, Leonard Gutter, Central Coordinator of the South American Sathya Sai Organizations, said: “Baba’s love encompasses all: There were 50,000 people working at the Towers and only 3,000 died; then Baba saved 47,000, not only devotees. Each person has his own karma: that was the destiny of those who died there.” The TV programme (first part) is transcribed here]

The deluded conjectures by Dr. Goldstein and Leonardo Gutter towards all those whose dear ones died in ther Twin Towers catastrophe and the total lack of judgement and blind faith beyond all reason it expresses is not in the least uncommon among Sathya Sai followers. See more about Dr. M. Goldstein here.

Dr. William Harvey is a member of the top policy-making ‘Prashanthi Council’ of the International Sathya Sai Organization. (Note: He is not to be confused with the US male nurse William M. Harvey, CRNA).  He spoke at the Sai Public Meeting in St. Louis, September 11, 2005, prematurely – and for no valid calendar reasons – celebrating Sathya Sai Baba’s 80th birthday (11/23) and the announcement of the Mayor that 9/11 is officially Sathya Sai Baba day in St. Louis! (see here – if unavailable see here) The report of Dr. Jack Feely, Regional President, Mid-Central Region US stated: “The program was held at the 1904 World’s Fair Pavilion, a magnificent open-air shelter in the center of Forest Park. The 1300-acre park, considered the “Crown Jewel” of the city, was a picturesque setting worthy of a public program about Sathya Sai Baba, the Divine Crown Jewel of the universe. (see here if unavailablesee here) ”The Sai Organization proclaimed that they had sent “personal letters of invitation went out to 49 professors of philosophy and theological studies of the major universities and colleges in the area, followed up with telephone message reminders. Press releases went to the major TV and radio stations, along with the major newspapers. Quarter-page ads promoting the meeting were put in a widely distributed spiritually oriented newspaper. That same paper accepted a 700-page article about Sathya Sai Baba and His teachings.”

Before introducing the speakers, Dr. Jack Feely, regional president, asked the guests to join in a silent prayer for those who lost their lives, were hurt, or lost loved ones during the tragedy of 9/11 four years earlier. Dr. William Harvey, a member of the Prasanthi Council, was the first speaker. He focused his talk on the life and teachings of Sathya Sai Baba. He began his presentation by explaining to the attendees, “It is our belief that viewed from a cosmic prospective there are no accidents and that everything happens for a reason, though it is often not obvious to us at the time. Hence, we can assume that everyone present here today is destined to be here and to be a part of this event.”

9/11 anniversary and Sathya Sai Baba’s claimed intervention!

THE FULLY-DISCREDITED SATHYA SAI ORGANIZATION MADE THE MOST TASTELESS AFFRONT TO 9/11 VICTIMS EVER?

COMPOSITE IMAGE OF TWINTOWERS AND SAI BABA

In a meeting in St. Louis on September 11th (2011)  the Sai Organization tried to use that terrortist attack tragedy to promote their guru!
In a live TV programme on Zona de Investigacion (Azul TV, Argentina), Dr. Michael Goldstein is reported on by the Argentian journalist and TV director, Agnostelli as follows: Dr. Goldstein “gave some news that left the sweating audience mute: On September 11, the devotees that worked at the Twin Towers and the Pentagon didn’t go to work that day or were late getting to their jobs. ‘Thanks to our beloved Bhagavan,’ pontificated Goldstein, ‘all the New York and Washington devotees are safe.’ I shuddered to think that the public might applaud the news. In the same programme, Leonard Gutter, Central Coordinator of the South American Sathya Sai Organizations, said: “Baba’s love encompasses all: There were 50,000 people working at the Towers and only 3,000 died; then Baba saved 47,000, not only devotees. Each person has his own karma: that was the destiny of those who died there.”
The TV programme’s 1st part is transcribed here.

The sheer callous indecency of these wild conjectures by Dr. Goldstein and Leonardo Gutter towards all those whose dear ones dies in that catastrophe would be hard to surpass. It shows a total lack of judgement and blind faith beyond all reason, not in the least uncommon among Sathya Sai followers and his defenders (as on the Internet). See more about Dr. M. Goldstein here.

The grotesque hard sell of Sathya Sai as connected to 9/11 in the US

Dr. William Harvey, a member of the top policy-making ‘Prashanthi Council’ of the International Sathya Sai Organization spoke at the Sai Public Meeting in St. Louis, September 11, 2005, prematurely – and for no valid calendar reasons – celebrating Sathya Sai Baba’s 80th birthday (11/23) and the announcement of the Mayor that 9/11 is offically Sathya Sai Baba day in St. Louis! (see here) and see the report of Dr. Jack Feely, Regional President, Mid-Central Region US here)

The report stated: “The program was held at the 1904 World’s Fair Pavilion, a magnificent open-air shelter in the center of Forest Park. The 1300-acre park, considered the “Crown Jewel” of the city, was a picturesque setting worthy of a public program about Sathya Sai Baba, the Divine Crown Jewel of the universe.”The Sai Organization announced at great length its many efforts to get publicity, as in the following short example: “Personal letters of invitation went out to 49 professors of philosophy and theological studies of the major universities and colleges in the area, followed up with telephone message reminders. Press releases went to the major TV and radio stations, along with the major newspapers. Quarter-page ads promoting the meeting were put in a widely distributed spiritually oriented newspaper. That same paper accepted a 700-page article about Sathya Sai Baba and His teachings.”

(Comment: Seven hundred pages seems a bit over the top! It would take 49 philosophy professors to do that job on short notice? But how many attended or supported this scandalous misuse of September 11 to propagandise for an Indian fraud accused of sex abuses and murder cover-up? Ah now, there you have it!). The result has hardly been earth-shaking. Naively and without joking, Dr. Feely informed of the selfless service provided to participants as follows: “ Cold bottled water, served to attendees throughout the program, offered physical comfort that added to the spiritual comfort the speakers’ words provided.”
