The atom, atomic power and God (Sathya Sai Baba)

Posted by robertpriddy on March 19, 2009

A learned fool would know better than this obscure and empty twaddle arising from speculative religious fantasies made by Sathya Sai Baba, the Creator of the Universe (or so he promotes himself!):-

“People feel this atomic power is separate from man and they have kept it aside in a scientific way. However, the atomic process is very sacred. Yet, people feel that it is lowly. Kaanaada said that it would be possible to realise God through this process.”

Comment: The atomic process is very sacred? How so… should it be worshipped? Should the Hadron Collider be seen as a temple for devotees?

“Till today no one has understood the sacred power of the atom. People think that the atom is only a phenomenon without a life force. The power of life that created this entire world is also in the atom. Hence, God is the embodiment of the microcosm and the macrocosm. Therefore, every human being should try to recognize the secret of the world and of the creation of man, and recognize what is his duty and act accordingly.”

Comment: Understanding the atom and atomic power will hardly help anyone recognise their duty or how to act.

“What man should recognize is the form of the atom. If the atom is understood, man will be one who understands everything. The atom only is God. That only is true humanness. That only is the life principle. The life principle within the atom is moving about throughout the world.”

Comment: Then according to this statement, scientists who know the form of the atom must be totally illumined. The form is the physical manifestation (according to Sai Baba’s own terminology whereby his body is just the ‘form’ of God). Strangely, physical scientists worldwide do not identify the atom and certainly not with Sathya Sai Baba. (with the possible exception of retired physicist G. Venkataraman, besotted devotee and chief publicist for Sai Baba)

“However, how should one take hold of it? The process of the microcosm has to be undertaken. This is what Kaanaada said. He said that when this (the process of the microcosm) is followed, it would be possible for us to receive (realise) the principle of Divinity.”

Comment: Get a hold and undertake the “process of the microcosm” whatever in spiritual bedlam that may be! Lowly Kaanada said it, so it must be universally true… ??

“Look — an atom is going there. We may go around it. If we wait around for it and if we proceed (to follow
it) with concentration, it will be caught by us. We may catch hold of any amount of atoms every moment. You just held so many. If they are let loose, they go (spread) wherever you look (all over). The sound of OM and the sound of an atom are as small as the atom. The nature of the mind is also dependent on this.”

Comment: He sees no difference between atoms and molecules and solid and fluid states. His recipe for the process of the microcosm is even more unclear.. it is approaching the barking and the raving (which must also be the sound of OM? How small is the sound of ‘Om’ – a micron, a nanometer?)

“In the evening when I was giving the Valedictory Address, I didn’t even know what I was saying.”

Comment: You can say that again, Sathya Sai Baba. That is a clearly stated  fact I would not contest!

Atomic physics Puttaparthi style. Deeply intriguing

Posted by robertpriddy on March 5, 2009

Some few quotations from many similarly anti-empirical statements and false ideas by Sathya Sai Baba show how he tried to impose on a simplified picture of the atom and the universe a meaning and purpose which is pure speculation… even though it has ancient roots in obscure and often confused scriptures written when humankind was in a very primitive state of speculation and ignorance of the workings of the physical universe. Interestingly, his chief propagandist is a relatively informed physicist (relative to Sathya Sai baba) yet this poor superstition-beleaguered Dr. G. Venkataraman – in his blind faith – naturally fails to challenge any of the Tommy rot his Lord and Master preaches.

The following quotes are from Sathya Sai Baba’s Guru Purnima Discourse, July, 2002.

(Sai Baba’s words are coloured brown and are in quotation marks, comments on them are in green)

“There is Divinity in every atom. Another name for the atom is God.”

The atom has never been called God since it was first actually discovered except in imagination – according to all scientific historians – by Thompson.

“From the time he was born until he died, Kaanaada contemplated on the atom saying, “Paramanu, paramanu, paramanu (meaning, ‘the smallest particle’).” This world could not be seen if the atom didn’t exist.”

The atom is not the smallest particle. Quarks are far smaller than atoms, protons, electrons or neutrons, all smaller than the atom, The self-proclaimed “great universal educator” Sathya Sai Baba – has evidently not understood the first thing about the Geneva experiments by CERN with the large Hadron collider.

“Earlier there was no form at all in the universe.”

It does not make sense to speak about time earlier (i.e before the ‘Big Bang’). Space-time as we understand it is one and the same.

“There was no sun or moon, no sky or earth and no stars — nothing at all. All was pitch darkness. However,
atoms came very densely together. Due to them coming together, there was intense heat generated.”

Physics has demonstrated that in the hypothetical environment of the big bang at the very beginning it was impossible for atoms to be formed. However close atoms are, no heat is generated.

“Due to this heat, an enormous sound came about.”

There can be no sound in the vacuum.

“… all of these densely combined atoms broke apart and spread everywhere. The sound of that breaking is Pranava, Omkara, which is the Primordial sound. This only is the original and first sound. This Pranava is present everywhere. What did this Pranava arise from? It began from atoms. There is nothing else except atoms.”

Sound cannot exist in empty space, or cross space, it can only be carried by a physical medium.

“What is the way to attain it? Kaanaada investigated into that subject. Finally he realised that, “It is
only one sound. It is the first sound.”

The so-called ancient Indian sage and speculator about existence, Kannada, reasoned this without evidence, just as Sathya Sai Baba does with all his entire “teaching’ about the nature of the cosmos.

“The root cause for this whole Creation is only the atom. ”

Interesting – once again Sai Baba forgets God the Creator, which or who he himself claims to be!

Sathya Sai Baba is one of the true “Enemies of Reason”, such as are exposed by Professor Richard Dawkins in his excellent TV programme of the same title. Read more about his comical and wholly uninformed ideas about the stars, the cosmos, atoms, magnetism and more:-
