Sathya Sai Baba’s bid for ‘Greatness’

Posted by robertpriddy on February 25, 2011

“Greatness is a transitory experience.  It is never consistent.  It depends in part upon the myth-making imagination of humankind.  The person who experiences greatness must have a feeling for the myth he is in.  He must reflect what is projected upon him.  And he must have a strong sense of the sardonic.  This is what uncouples him from belief in his own pretensions.  The sardonic is all that permits him to move within himself.  Without this quality, even occasional greatness will destroy a man.”    Frank Herbert in Dune. (p.100)

Sathya Sai Baba has, through the decades, repeatedly made the most extravagant claims about his own greatness as Creator of the Universe, the Deity of all Deities, the Saviour of Mankind, the Father who sent Jesus and has predicted time and again how firstly India, then the entire world would be freed from the moral decline of the Age of Kali by the imminent coming of a Golden Age (see here). One such flagrant prophesy was made by Sai Baba about “Bharat” (i.e. India) in 2008 as follows:- “Very soon, the entire world will be united. In fact, after 28 years, the world itself will become “Bharat”. Everyone will call themself a Bharatiya (one imbued with godliness — Bhagavat rathas). No one will refer to themself as belonging to this state or that state, this region or that region. You may go to any country, but you refer to yourself as belonging to the country of Bharat.” (from Sathya Sai Baba’s Convocation Discourse 22-11-2008 at Further to this, yet more totally absurd:- One of India’s most powerful Hindu nationalist leaders, Ashok Singhal, who has an international profile in the Hindu world, told an assembly of political and religious luminaries in Delhi of a prophecy he says Sathya Sai Baba shared with him. The Organiser, September 14, 2008, reports: “… Shri Singhal also threw light on how to strengthen the Hindu society and unite our great India. The VHP leader, while disclosing his discussion with Satya Sai Baba, said that Sai Baba had informed him that between 2020 and 2030 the whole India would be of Hindus and after 2030 the whole world would be of Hindus”.

On several occasions, Sai Baba has proclaimed in his public discourse that ‘Everyone’ loves Me’ says Sathya Sai Baba, everyone will visit, despite the fact that very far from the whole world has even heard of him! Here is one example of Sathya Sai Baba promoting his own Divine Greatness. It was no doubt never ‘thrust upon him’ but he thrusts his claim on all wherever he can!

Among some of the more ludicrous attempts to convince his followers of his unstoppable greatness was his very heavy hinting that he was in line for the Nobel Peace Prize because of a bogus claimant to influence on this – Dr. Michael Nobel – visited him and praised him, but also because the Indian Government – led by his foot-worshipping Prime Minister devotee – is reported to have nominated him;-   Sathya Sai Baba as Nobel Peace Prize Candidate – another failed attempt at world recognition

Sathya Sai Baba’s India stable?

Posted by robertpriddy on January 5, 2009

“The fame and fortune of Bharat is truly great. While several countries of the world have faced calamities of various kinds, Bharat has remained stable. It is a country richly endowed with a variety of wealth.” (from Sathya Sai Baba’s Convocation Discourse 22-11-2008)

Comment: This is vague rambling talk: “several countries of the world” (which ones?) “have faced calamities of several kinds”, (what sort of calamities?). However “Bharat has remained stable” Why do the translators use Bharat and not just India? Probably because Sathya Sai Baba is ever harping back to ancient days of Bharat as described in myths? In any case, Indian can hardly be said to have remained any more stable than countless other countries, and it is a more unstable place than most modern countries today, no one can doubt that. There is an entire catalogue of instabilities in India’s entire past and present

Among notable present instabilities is the stand-off over 60 years with Pakistan, nowadays with nuclear weapons involved, and presently much aggravated again by the Mumbai terrorist attacks which this self-proclaimed ‘all-knowing divinity’ failed to mention just a few days before they happened. As is known he made a huge blunder – removed by most of his editors – in claiming India was free of all fear of bombs and attacks! (See Sai Baba bomb claim demolishes his credibility). The list of other “instabilities’ seems endless. To mention a few more: the constant conflict with the suppressed in Manipur, the long series of bomb attacks across the sub-continent, the killing of Christians, the mutual outbursts of mass slaughter between Hindus and Muslims, still continuing since the Indian Partition holocaust. Add to this 800 million deprived people, half of them virtually under the bread line, no proper public health care or common old age pensions, a massive AIDS epidemic… one could go on for pages and pages. So Sathya Sai Baba is talking through his hat about Bharat.

The ultra-simplistic ‘philosophy’ of Sathya Sai Baba:

“Suppose a person whom you consider as an enemy is approaching you; you offer your pranams to him and enquire, “Hello, how are you, brother?” Immediately the other man will respond saying, “How are you brother?” He will not get angry. Why? Since you called him brother, he will also treat you in the same way. It is in your language that either love and faith or enmity and distrust in the other person is displayed.” (ibid)

Tell that to the Marines, to the contenders in the Israel-Palestine conflict, to Mugabe and his ‘friends’, to the Taliban, Al Quaida… One can just see Sathya Sai Baba telling them in person! He, who lives ensconced in a regular fortress, guarded by special undercover agents and surrounded by carefully-vetted and closely-searched devotees, dares not even talk to anyone who disagrees with him. Who is he to give advice? Well, we know who he thinks he is!
