Sathya Sai Baba fully silenced, even maltreated and imprisoned?

Posted by robertpriddy on April 16, 2011

The battle over Sathya Sai Baba (and his wealth) has broken out in full and the Indian press are reporting it. At long last, after numerous pointed warning by dissidents, the total unaccountability of the Sathya Sai Central Trust is being broached by the media and challenged by interested parties up to ministerial level, and even in court! Information about the resources of the trust and all of its various activities is sparse in the extreme, it is uncertain who holds the reins of power within it, and even who are members and who are not! (One news outlet confidently reports that John Hislop – former head of the US Sathya Sai Organization – is a member, but he died over a decade ago!)

But note that the journalist cannot get the simplest facts right - SB did not break a leg two years ago, he suffered from a major hip joint collapse and botched surgery in 2003!

Sathya Sai Baba has always been at the core of cover-up activities, both as regards the murders under his own nose and the four executions of former students by the Puttaparthi police on his younger brother’s orders which he condoned (being the supreme ruler of Prashanthi Nilayam township) and as regards the years of sex abuses against young men and boys, which came out in force only after 1999 when the Internet made this possible. Now, however, he is himself the victim of a cover-up, if the many accusations that are now flying in all directions are to be given any credence.

One well-informed critical source in India has informed me that “Former trust members and ex-MPs are openly threatening to expose the entire sb charade if they are not adequately “paid off”…politicians are descending to grab whatever their grubby hands can….while sb aides are hoping to make a fast buck and make a run for it…and sb trust members and close family are involved in a bitter fight….all this is out in the open…and a public interest legal petition has been filed in an Andhra court to ascertain the facts of the whole dirty affair…”

That it is a “dirty affair” and that grubby hands are out to grab what they can is no surprise to those who have had the opportunity of observing closely what goes on around Sathya Sai Baba (such as myself) and many ex-devotees who have – like myself – been swindled by Sai Baba’s various trusts (see Sai Finance and Deceits and further deceit documentation here).
The secrecy and unreliability of the entire Central Trust operation is illustrated somewhat by the following outlookindia news report:-

Sathya Sai Baba failing – at the mercy of power brokers

Shivarathri 2010 - Sai Baba poorly and grim

Shivarathri 2010 - Sai Baba poorly and grim

Through the last 8 years or so, reports have come to me from various persons who either were still visiting Prashanthi Nilayam, or from ex-students and other disaffected followers who all claim that Sathya Sai Baba is no longer in control of his own affairs, neither on the Sathya Sai Central Trust, nor the ashram nor even his own activities. One recent visitor informed me that Sathya Sai Baba’s hands shake constantly and very visibly. Another states ” He has a disease and is at the mercy of his organization”. These reports concur generally with one another and with the information given us by a very long-term follower who was living in Puttaparthi until fairly recently who stated that Sai Baba’s shows many signs of strange behaviour in public, including statements that he would go here or there later that day, which he never did. He also told an interview group in 2009 that he is now 94 years old! (which suggests he may think he will die soon, while in reality he is much younger than that). See this report, which also strongly indicates that Sai Baba was already in a very difficult position by 2006! Some say he is a virtual dummy whose strings are pulled by the smart operators who hide from the public the facts about his physical and mental condition as best they can. He does not look in the least vital or happy in the more recent images of him that have been released despite the censorship of his keepers.

Sathya Sai Baba 2010

Photos from 2010 show apparent lack of facial control

The Sathya Sai Organization has long been a battleground for control of its interests, as was told me by V.K. Narasimhan when I had written a book in which I gave what he considered a far too positive picture of the organization (see here). Numerous unofficial reports and statements show that the same applies to the multi-billion Sathya Sai Central Trust, which Sathya Sai Baba has said he leaves entirely in the hands of the directors. Some of the directors have backgrounds which do not inspire confidence, far from it. The institution which controls and funds all Sai Baba interests, the Sathya Sai Central Trust, was made a tax and custom duty-free organization by special allowance of his devotees running the government. As a Charitable Trust it is under no legal requirement to have rules or guidelines. The Board of Directors runs it, allegedly always deferring to Sathya Sai Baba’s wishes. That may have been so many years ago, but years ago, Sai Baba announced that he had nothing more to do with its decisions!  No known guidelines or principles are exist (unless secretly) and it makes available no minutes from its meetings – remaining a closed book in every way to the public, even to donors.

Sathya Sai Central Trust - can it be trusted?

The man who was selected by Sathya Sai Baba to oversee the Rayalaseema Water Project, a Mr. K.Chackravati – a former government worker who had been sacked for major embezzlement! Later he became head of the ashram at Puttaparthi. It is reliably reported that contractor corruption and embezzlement occurred with a large part of the much-trumpeted Rayalaseema Water Project under Mr. Chackravati, who Sathya Sai Baba selected to the Board of his Central Trust. Just to take one more example of a money grubber who obtained a directorship at this multi-billion dollar trough, consider the credentials of D. K. Adikesavulu (see press report scan).

Some of the persons on the Central Trust have records which do them no credit whatever. Even Sai Baba himself had to sack some members in 1995 who he had repeatedly warned about embezzlement, taking kickbacks from contractors Larsen and Turbro etc. including Colonel Joga Rao who bought an apartment block in Delhi he could not explain and ashram head, Mr. Narayanen [former Head of Prashanti Nilayam ashram and former Secretary to the Sathya Sai Central Trust until 1996]  who was dismissed from his posts by Sai Baba having been  found to have an unaccountable luxury villa in Bangalore.

Sathya Sai Baba’s younger brother, Janakiramiah (deceased) was – after having been kept out of the ashram for many years by SB –  given a directorship on the Sathya Sai Central Trust directly after the 1993 murders episode. Janakiramiah claimed it was an assassination attempt on Sai Baba, but Sai Baba himself firmly stated the exact opposite. Janakiramiah was a multi-millionaire property developer and brother owner in Puttaparthi who conspired with then Home Minister S.B. Chavan – backed by the Indian Government of Sai devotee PM Narasimha Rao. In the presence of my friend V.K. Narashihan (SB’s close servitor and editor) they discussed the cover up of the murders (such as the blackmailing of the Puttaparthi police into executing the four entrapped devotees who had intruded into the temple). The Home Minister congratulated Janakiramiah for his role in that, to which the man replied “Dead men tell no tales” and they both laughed at his wit! I cannot doubt that this is fact because Narasimhan told it to me (in almost a whisper) when we were discussing the incident (see scan of my notes made at the time)  and his many problems of living in the ashram due to his increasing doubts about many things which troubled him more and more, and not least the death of his wife.

Roundhouses etc.1987
View of ’roundhouses’ and accommodation ‘sheds’ Prashanthi Nilayam (from 1987)

All is not as it seems outwardly!
The Vigilance Officer who informed me much about the behind-the-scenes goings-on at the Sathya Sai Baba ashrams, Mr. V. Ramnath, knew a lot about certain people around Sathya Sai Baba. The ashram is run,  he said, mostly by financial crooks and virtual ‘goondas’. He had known Vijay Prabhu for years before the June 1993 ‘incident’ he supposedly master-minded’). He told me that Prabhu had been a most devoted ‘seva’ worker and subsequently security chief of the ashram – which he was when the fatal intrusion and six murders took place. Vijay Prabhu told Ramnath of brothels in Puttaparthi used by ashram staff, and also of staff alcohol abuse. Ramnath made efforts to cross-check this and found it to be a fact. Incidentally, when investigators had descended en masse after the June 1993 murders and executions, various journalists reported that drink, including bottles of rum, were turned up within the ashram. Not so surprising, really, but not what one is misled to believe, or would wish to think, about ‘Prashanthi Nilayam’.

How murder haunted the ‘Abode of Supreme Peace’ (‘Prashanthi Nilayam’)
Vijay Prabhu, my informant said, was an honest man but he got overheated about the corruption… and Sai Baba “seems to have used him as a broom to sweep up some of the dirt in the ashram”, by giving hints to support his attempt to remove the current administration. (Sai Baba’s closest and power-broking valet Radhakrishnan and his sidekick Mahajan were killed, though probably the conflict and knife fight was an unexpected, unwanted conflict for the intruders). Sai Baba had told Prabhu, said my informant, that as long as the world does not change outside the ashram, nothing would change inside either… and there was nothing that he (Sai Baba) could do about it himself.  [A glaring contradiction to Sai Baba’s repeated claims that he is omnipotent and come to save mankind from destruction etc. etc.!] This was also the core of Vijay Prabhu’s statement to the police when he gave himself up months after the incident to a neutral police force outside the Puttaparthi area.  He chose that other police force to surrender to because – as head of security at Prashanthi Nilayam – he knew all too well the murderousness of the totally corrupted Puttaparthi police chief (who was blackmailed into executing the four assailant devotees by Sai Baba’s younger brother Janakiramian and Co.). Vijay Prabhu’s life was – and those of his family and various associates were – ruined by all this (not least since his brother, S.S. Prabhu was one of the four executed in Sai Baba’s bedroom see here) . Some who were well known to my informant were persecuted badly by the powerful clique that remained, including Mrs Dolly Saxena of the Delhi Customs and Excise Dept. and her son, who even had to flee India due to persecution by the ashram for being known to Vijay Prabhu. (Incidentally, Vijay Prabhu was also firmly convinced that 90% of Sai Baba students did not believe that Sai Baba to be the avatar he claims to be!)

Tax-free and largely unaccountable Sathya Sai Central Trust Fund
As is known to informed persons in India, like Mr. V. Ramnath, the core of the whole Sathya Sai organisation, being registered as a charitable Trust Fund, is not legally required to have any rules or guidelines. Sai Baba delegates authority, and also changes the rules and sometimes the personnel, when he sees fit. So there is no structure or defined way of dealing with matters. (In 1995 he ‘sacked’ Col. Joga Rao for taking kickbacks from entrepreneurs Larsen & Turbro and having bought an apartment block in Delhi he could not explain, and the previous head of the PN ashram, Narayanan, for financing a luxury villa in Bangalore with embezzled money). One asks, would omniscient and righteous God let a servant embezzle us all for so long and so much? If so, what kind of example does this set? These are the facts behind the colourful and deceptive façade of Sai Baba ashrams.

The fate of sacking awaited Nataraj, head of the accommodation office and Mr. P. Suri of the Sathya Sai Books and Publications Trust, both of whom had been milking the system for years. In 1993, Suri was found with 25 lakhs of rupees in his room which he could not explain, he could produce no accounts whatever for the Trust of which he was the Convener! Both were ‘sacked’ by Sai Baba in due course, but after their rascally practices had long been fairly common knowledge. Mr. Suri received 900 copies of the 1st ed. of my book, which was sold from the Prashanti bookshop for Rs. 50.- per copy (in 1994), for which no accounts were presented to me or anyone else! Al Drucker, Rita Bruce, Mr. Taylor (publisher of the ‘Gufa Narayana Ashram’ books) all suffered similar or worse extravagances from Mr. Suri. The same practices apparently continue under Mr. Rajan, who has the profitable business now. One notable fact about the methods used is that, if you pay in too large a sum of money by mistake (as my wife unthinkingly did in 1998, due to a fault by the clerk who calculated wrongly and overcharged by hundreds of rupees!). They would not refund the difference even five minutes after payment! They have an iron rule, they said, to pay out nothing whatever. Instead the difference had to be placed in an account with them. Any money you have on account with them you can never recoup, but they may sometimes send on some unwanted, unreadable trash books that they can’t sell to make up for the amount!

Not everyone is aware that the head of the PN ashram from about 2000, a Mr. K. Chackravati, the former chief of the water project as appointed by Sai Baba and subsequently Head of the Prashanthi Nilayam Ashram, was previously sacked from his government post for major embezzlement! This was common knowledge in the IAS and to discerning Indian newspaper readers.
