Exposé writer Barry Pittard on the latest Trust and treasure scandals

Posted by robertpriddy on June 22, 2011

Critics of Sathya Sai Baba and his international cult observe yet further ‘waves’ of interest in the demise of his repute. Barry Pittard has been engaged, both as a chronicler and indeed as a maker of such waves since the end of 1992. He has just written a blog that relates points relating the Sathya Sai Baba cult exposure that currently rages in India and the intensive exposure, emanating largely from outside India, in which Pittard has been a central player.

Below are some points he makes. The article is: Sai Baba Treasure Scandals: His Big Political Protectors Now Run For Cover. Posted by Barry Pittard on June 22, 2011

“For some weeks, it has been evident to any careful observer, that the Andhra Pradesh government has been only too aware of troubles in the Sathya Sai camp that might grow too big to suppress. See: Human Rights Commission Probe Fronts Andhra Government On Sathya Sai Baba Treatment

“Sathya Sai devotees, too, are asking leading and uncomfortable questions, and consulting legal opinion. Just as those of us, who are now former followers of Sathya Sai Baba, did as, long ago, we began to investigate ever further layers on layers of corruption. And of a spiritual betrayal of the utmost magnitude.”

“There is relief that at least a few of Sai Baba’s dark deeds, and those of his core servitors, are being revealed on a large-scale – and from within India itself!”

“Could we turn for justice to the Indian Justice system? No, we emphatically failed. Even though one of India’s gutsiest and most senior advocates to the Supreme Court, Kamini Jaiswal, went in to bat.”

“Could we turn for justice even to the former pinnacle of the Indian Justice system, P.N. Bhagwati, former Chief Justice of Indian, who is now implicated in the treasury scandals, and is himself up for police investigation? We could not turn to this legal ‘hero’, either.”

Corruption India: Sai Baba cult hoard plunder by Trustees?

Posted by robertpriddy on June 19, 2011

The Sai Central Trust can do anything without the public knowing a whit about its transactions, despite their declaration that “All transactions of the Trusts are duly accounted in their books of account. An experienced and qualified chartered accountant oversees the accounting and financial management. The accounts are duly audited by a reputed firm of Chartered Accountants based at Delhi. Periodical returns, accounts and audit reports as prescribed by law are duly filed with the concerned authorities under the Income Tax Act, FCRA and other applicable statutes.”

The Trust is totally unaccountable to anyone but secret political cadres, who are generally known to be corrupt nest-feathering officials whom the system, as it is, cannot bring to book due to its in-built functions based on corruption. The Trustees have any amount of funds with which to bribe anyone, and they have a legal network of Sai-devoted High Court judges – with ex-Chief Justice Bhagwati as their ideal (see Sai Baba’s Bhagwati shows total disrespect for justice)

Now we see how the great miserly hoard the Trust denied existed, is being spirited away in vans and only the poor driver and minor go-betweens get caught. The Trustees are clever at cover-up and hand-outs as it has been a main part of their business since the bedroom executions in 1993 in which some trustees had a hand in blackmailing the police to carry out (notably Colonel Joga Rao, deceased)!

The Supreme Court of India was instituted through P.N. Bhagwati – a life-long Sathya Sai Baba devotee and director of his charitable trust. This court destroyed its record of a petition made to it by Hari Sampath (former security guard at Sai Baba’s ashram) and presented by famous lawyer Kamini Jaiswal. The deletion of the official record meant that Embassies – especially the UK Embassy in Delhi – could not get confirmation that the petition had ever been made or a decision handed down. However, a copy of the court decision document evaded their attention – attested as genuine by a justarius publicus – and a scan of it is shown here The issue is treated here.

The injudicious P.N. Bhagwati also signed the egregious letter against Sai critics along with the then Prime Minister, Vajpayee, despite the fact that no a single investigation of any kind had been undertaken by any of the signatories or any other official body in India, while the Supreme Court Petition was thrown out by judges who were Sai followers. The authorities even subverted the Right to Information Act to stop the Indian Skeptic’s Basava Premanand from obtaining any information on any investigation that may have been made… because none were (of course).

Midas hoard revealed was in Sathya Sai Baba’s private possession

Posted by robertpriddy on June 17, 2011

Never forget that the self-appointed total renunciate of all worldly goods and desires was exposed after his death as a miserly hoarder on a huge scale. The genuine valuable diamonds he had were never given to any of those who he claimed to ‘materialize’ diamond rings for. Unless perhaps for one or two top Indian elite figures (though no one has ever produced proof of a single genuine diamond from him! (i.e. a professional diamond assayer. But assayers have shown that his claimed ‘diamonds’ were virtually worthless zircon or synthetic gemstones – see here).

Sathya Sai Baba with hands in prayer?

From the Telegraph, Calcutta, "Open Sesame! Baba and his chamber of secrets" 11.5 crore rupees = over £ 1.6 million

The Mumbai Mirror also reported:- “The Central Sathya Sai Trust, which conducted an inventory of the things stored inside the Yajur Mandir since it was broken open on Wednesday, came out with the announcement listing details of the treasure trove.

The assessment was done in the presence of retired judge of Supreme Court A P Mishra and retired judge of Karnataka High Court Vaidyanatha.
The room had two huge idols of Ganesh and Krishna, which Baba used to pray to for two hours every day.  According to reports, diamonds presented by Saudi royalty were also found there.

As many as 20 SBI staff counted the cash for 36 hours using three cash counting machines, apart from manually weighing the ornaments.
Trust legal counsel member Naganand disclosed the details of the wealth to media. The room had restricted entry for everybody including trust members, his relatives and close aides. Only the Baba’s most trusted personal assistant Sathyajit used to be allowed entry now and then to serve Baba. Rumours regarding the spiritual leader’s will were also put to rest after trust members declared that a will had also been recovered in the room. The room had been kept locked ever since Baba was hospitalised in March.”

Where the report that Sai Baba prayed two hours daily to idols of Ganesh and Krishna originated none can guess… if it were true it would be a sensation, as he claimed to be the reincarnation of Krishna, so why pray to himself? Now there is allegedly a will made by Sathya Sai Baba! What does that contain? Will it make Satyajit the head of his Trust or what? More internal battling and cover-up is only to be expected, considering all the cloak-and-dagger behind the scenes so far! Devotees are saying the unprecedented photo of SB doing namaskaar (right)  was a last greeting, that he knew his time had come. Or, just as likely… did this express atonement for a lifetime of deceits and sins in a typical gesture of “public apology”. Did the Central Trust members become seriously worried what he’d do next, leading to their “decisions”, followed by SB’s “heart attack”, hospitalisation… and never fully explained or certificated death? Nobody knows what they did, do or will do… as an academic has mailed me today:-
“I find it most alarming that no one from the Revenue service, the government or otherwise was allowed or had pressed the Trust to be present during the official opening of the inner sanctum.”

A long-time contact of mine in India has sent me information (inset in dark blue) from his insider sources which facts are now appearing here and there in numerous Indian papers:-

Sai Baba’s official residence “Yajur mandiram” – built at a cost of around Rs 35-40 crores ( $9-10 millions) in 2006 – was opened yesterday by (only some of the) Sathya Sai Central Trust members. It had been kept locked for the past 2 months since Sathya Sai Baba’s final hospitalization (that is, apart from one entry by police to try to find the will of Sai Baba that someone had dreamed he told them it was in a silver casket there (Most amusingly, nothing was found!) . At 10 AM  on 16th June, 2011, the key was brought from the State Bank of India – where it has been held –  by the bank manager and the residence was opened. Sources tell me – as largely confirmed by some newspaper reports too – that a staggering amount of hard cash was discovered, in several currencies. It was so much that, after two hours, bank officials decided  to bring in many currency counting machines. About 15 to 20 students were pressed into service to count the cash alone, and it took them many hours to complete the job. Unofficial reports say that the cash alone would be in the range of several millions of dollars.

Satyajit was specially brought in by the SSB trust to identify all the places where the “divine treasure” has been stashed away, as he was the only one Sai Baba had trusted in his last few years.

(NOTE: IBN Live reported 15 June:- “It is learnt that Ratnakar wanted the Trust to give no importance to Satyajit under any circumstances.” Meanwhile, the Hindustan Times, June 16, reported:- “Sathya Sai Baba’s personal care-giver Satyajit, who alone had the knowledge of the biometric lock system, accompanied the trust members and officials. During the spiritual guru’s lifetime, Satyajit was the only person who had access to his personal chamber.” So the Trustees had to swallow their pride or else remain locked out, but Satyajit complied even though everyone knonw Sathya Sai Baba intended him to be the one who would lead the Central Trust. Which strongly indicates how thoroughly dishonourable the remaining trustee power-brokers are. See more on their despicable lies below. Rediff News, June 17, reports under the heading:- “Rs 11.5 cr cash, 98 kg gold found in Sai Baba’s room“. Enough said here!

Apart from the huge cash haul, a large amount of gold, diamonds and precious jewelry has been found. Chains, lockets, rings etc in their hundreds were heaped in secret hiding places. Local sources say that this would only be a fraction of what had been originally inside Sai Baba’s residence as after his hospitalisation, several trucks of cash and gold had been reportedly spirited away by SSB trust members/their agents.A few computers were also found inside the residence complex, and are reported to contain details of Sai Baba’s huge financial empire. SSB trust members say they have videographed the inspection proceedings and would submit an inventory to the government soon, but they refused to comment or take questions, while Ratnakar, SSB’s nephew has said a statement would be issued within 24 hours.

The Times of India reported June 17:- Baba used to maintain a cash chest from where he used to gift priceless valuables and gifts to his ardent devotees,” a source said.” and “Sources said that crores worth valuables and gold jewellery was stored inside the mandir. The Trust kept everybody, including media, at bay though it had promised to open the doors of the mandir in the midst of devotees and high-profile individuals.” “Ex-CJI P N Bhagawati along with former High Court judge Vaidyanathan and ex-Supreme Court judge A P Misra were also present when the inventory was being done in the mandir. Surprisingly, the district collector, SP or revenue officials were not present at the time of inventory. Though the Trust promised to carry out the exercise in the presence of a third party, nobody was allowed inside,” sources said. Media was kept out of bounds, while only DSP Narasimhulu, who is touted to be close to Rathnakar, was present.

Sathya Sai Trustees lie their way through everything, the proof:-
My friend also points out:-

On April 28th, the SB trust members in a rambling hour long press conference, 4 days after sb’s death, had issued several statements about the functioning of the sb trust, its transparency, its perfect accounting of every single rupee received by check, about how the press and vested interests were casting aspersions etc…
“18. In light of the baseless, irresponsible and false accusations of defalcation of gold, valuable artefacts and even money, it is emphatically stated that these accusations are wholly untrue and it is believed that these have been engineered by certain vested interests with a view to defame the fair name of the Trust, its functionaries and the Trustees. There is no truth whatsoever in these allegations.
19. All transactions of the Trusts are duly accounted in their books of account. An experienced and qualified chartered accountant oversees the accounting and financial management. The accounts are duly audited by a reputed firm of Chartered Accountants based at Delhi. Periodical returns, accounts and audit reports as prescribed by law are duly filed with the concerned authorities under the Income Tax Act, FCRA and other applicable statutes. There is no proceeding initiated against any of the Trusts by any authority under any statute alleging any impropriety or violation of law.” Here one may study that full official statement

Indeed, almost everything their infallible preceptor, Sathya Sai Baba himself, said about money, property, selfless service, celibacy, proper behaviour, human nature and so on is contradicted by something else he said or did. Yet most of the top Indian elite still worships his memory and condones the Central Trust’s  secrecy and undoubted corruption and suspected vast money-laundering without a single check or intervention! All these corrupt politicians attended the funeral of one of the worst guru exploiters of people in Indian history, Sathya Sai Baba, the Midas of Puttaparthi whose deceptions all turned to donated ‘gold’ for him and who died under such ignominious and suspicious circumstances without a death certificate or post-mortem while his Central Trust fought daily over the power and money at stake! It shows what a gigantic leap forward is needed for Indian politics and law ever to catch up with a moderately run and informed democracy, alas for the majority of its people! The great problem for Manmohan Singh and all the top politicians in India is that, in appearing to try to crack down on corruption, they cannot crack down on the leading figures who allow and/or turn a blind eye to it (i.e. themselves!) except where it is impossible for them not to act at least partially, as in the case of the huge Commonwealth Games international scandal. The government is beset by a populace claiming a clean-up, first led by Gandhi activist Anna Hazare (and of course, NOT by Sathya Sai Baba). In the case of the TV yogi guru Ramdev’s massively supported fast and demonstrations against top-level corruption, the huge demonstrations have been brutally suppressed with the support of the Indian Government. He said he would continue his hunger strike and organise nationwide protests this week against the police action. ‘It’s a blot on democracy and a conspiracy to kill me,’ he said. He accused Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government of reneging on a promise to take swift action against Indians who have stashed millions of dollars illegally in safe havens abroad.

Sathya Sai Baba succession problem

Posted by robertpriddy on May 19, 2011

News: Earlier reports that the Sathya Sai Central Trust had decided to share the sub-chairmanship of the Trust on a rotating basis (The Chairman still being Sathya Sai Baba) have apparently not eased the doubts of many followers and no doubt many others whose livelihoods are one way or another involved in the outcome. See?The predominant feature of the Sathya Sai Central Trust remains its extreme secrecy and total unaccountability, besides the deluded – indeed preposterous – claim of one of its main players, ex-High Chief Justice P.N. Bhagwati, that Sathya Sai Baba has acted through himself to make his every single decision since he became a devotee, This farce continues, with Sathya Sai Baba continuing as the Chairman despite being dead and unresurrected despite all claims and wishful thinking. Live mint (see right) continues as follows:-

The passing of the mantle in institutions built around the charisma of one man or woman is never an easy process, as evidenced by the trials that beset the organization that used to be presided over by Osho (also known as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh). At Puttaparthy, the initial two contenders were said to be the popular Satyajit, Baba’s caregiver and personal assistant, and R.J. Rathnakar, Baba’s nephew. Since only a trust member can be appointed chairman, Satyajit first needed to be inducted into the council in order to qualify. But any move in that direction was squelched by V. Srinivasan, a key trustee of the All India Sai Organizations, when he said: “We have no intentions to include him in the trust” as Satyajit was only a student of the Sathya Sai University chosen to become Baba’s caregiver, and “that is all his position is”.

Other names have since been mentioned: Chetana Raju, granddaughter of Baba’s older sister who runs the women’s welfare trust; P.N. Bhagwati (Bhagawati), the 90-year-old former chief justice of India. Rathnakar, a trust member and nephew of Baba confined to a wheelchair, stays in the running. The latest word is that one, or maybe even two of them, will be chosen at a trust meeting likely next week. Srinivasan refused to give anything away, asking: “Why do you people believe in speculation?”

Sudhir Kakar, psychoanalyst and author, who has written about the hold godmen have over Indians, explains what the passing of the guru means. “Once the godman (or woman) is gone, the magic is gone. Except for old timers, new visitors come to these ashrams just like another pilgrimage place,”he said. “It is a place where you were once in contact with divinity, but the spirit is gone.” Most organizations diminish after the guru goes, except for those with a strong institutional structure in place. Even so, “the best that they can hope for is that they can keep the memory and legacy of their guru secure”, Kakar said. Long-standing devotees say the organization is unimportant when the guru is alive, then becomes crucial once the guru dies. “Such organizations served only a perfunctory purpose while the guru lives,”said Rajat Narain, former IAS officer and additional general secretary of Shree Shree Anandamayee Sangha, headquartered in Haridwar. “They performed formal duties of clearing payments and things like that.”

To the believer, whatever will be, will be. “We are not worried,”said a Sri Sathya Sai Baba devotee who works in the ashram at Puttaparthy. “Whatever happens is the will of Sathya Sai Baba. If he wishes the ashram should prosper, it will. If he doesn’t, it won’t. And that’s the end of that.” (

Sathya Sai Central Trust decisions on its leadership

Posted by robertpriddy on May 13, 2011

Latest news:- Those who run the Sathya Sai Central Trust now have decided that the power of cheque signing will devolve on three trustees, the nephew of Sathya Sai Baba, and two others. Meanwhile, P.N. Bhagwati was made Vice-Chancellor of the Sathya Sai College and Satyajit – considered a front runner for top office by the media – has withdrawn from the fray and gone to Mumbai to be an ‘ordinary devotee’.

The Times of India posted an unclear typo-ridden article (see on right). The untrustworthy and corrupt P.N. Bhagwati (read all about him!)  holds the first temporary, rotating chairmanship. In a new development which would be hilarious were it not such a serious matter of clandestine manoeuvres behind closed doors. Under him, the Trust decided on a gimmick that is almost childishly naive, to name Sathya Sai Baba the “Permanent Chairman” of the Trust. The idea is of course that the widely accused sexual abuser and accomplice to cold-blooded executions is living in an eternal realm and steering everything from there as the ‘eternal charioteer’ he proclaimed himself.  No doubt the washing of money outside all accountability with continued complete tax, duty and excise exemption and non-reporting will go on in a celestial fashion, with P.N. Bhagwati receiving inner directions from Swami! Anyone who donates to this ‘corrupt body’ will be most foolish, even though some of the money is used to keep the private hospitals and questionable schools and colleges running.

One can hope that the recent Wikileaks report on Indian nationals as those having the biggest overall deposits in Swiss banks, will follow up and eventually release the full names of all those countless corrupt Indian exploiters of their countrymen with those accounts, giving the amounts involved in each case. One can quite confidently expect many names associated with Sathya Sai Baba to pop up in that event! This disaster for the Indian elite has apparently been anticipated by authorities who have instituted methods of face-saving and vastly reduced loss. The Economic Times of India reports at length under the title “Black money: Legitimise it by paying 15% tax, park it in India” Here is a short excerpt:- “There’s some delightful news for those with Swiss bank accounts. Indians , who opted for such numbered account service, have a way to mislead anyone trying to hunt them down. For them, a new window in the tax law has flung open just when some of the doors are about to shut. The law of the land has made it possible for them to bring back the money , legitimise it by paying 15% tax, and park it in any account with a bank in India. No questions will be asked. The taxman won’t harass them because it’s money on which tax has been paid.”

The Milli Gazette has published a damning account about India’s political elite, referring to the latest sensational revelations by Wikileaks. We read: “Wikileaks now tell us, for the canny reason that India’s “mainstream” power wielders/brokers reserve truth-sharing not for the people of India but for the American Embassy. There is the intimate zone where they bare their hearts out.” Wikileaks opens India’s dirty Pandora Box. This bears out yet again what I and my colleagues in the Sathya Sai Baba exposé have been pointing out… the top people are worshippers of Sai Baba, who praised them and condoned their policies, allowing them to visit him and get public blessings. Have no illusions about all those involved!

Sathya Sai Baba and India in-depth study

Barry Pittard articles on India and Sathya Sai Baba

Some of Barry Pittard’s articles at his blogsite – – are as: see below. For three decades, he has been well-known for his great love of India, where he lived for several years, often engaged in service to the very poor, and also teaching at the Sathya Sai college outside Bangalore. The issues he raises about India’s profound levels of corruption and superstition are issues that thinking Indians themselves have great concern about. Critical comment on India’s problems can equate to a genuine care for that country to see far better days. Countless of India’s greatest thinkers and reformers have been among those who have criticised many things within Indian society, such as superstition that penetrates most sections, the blind and fervent worship whether of gurus, film stars, cricketers, etc., the appalling record in human rights, casteism, endemic corruption, attitudes towards women, and so forth.
