Prince of Wales – more information on his fascination with Sathya Sai Baba

Following up on my previous posting about Prince Charles’ desire to see Sathya Sai Baba (back in the 1990s) some further testimony appeared as late as 2015.That Prince Charles did wish to visit Sathya Sai Baba is further borne out by a posting made in 2015 at http://adventureofgod.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/travel-e-pad-swami-can-take-you-through.html

Prince Charles stopped from following/visiting Sathya Sai Baba

Posted by robertpriddy on March 30, 2017

An early Indian immigrant to UK, Manubhai C. Patel, who I visited a few times in Wembley (London), where he lived with his wife, was the earliest promoter in UK of books by and about Sathya Sai Baba. He sent a copy of each new Sai Baba related book in English to Prince Charles, who personally acknowledged them and his interest.

Manubhai Patel was a fully signed-up ‘true believer’ in Sathya Sai Baba’s claim that he was the creator and sustainer of the entire universe:-

It was primarily due to the efforts of the Sai Baba exposé from 2000 onwards that the Prince of Wales, Charles, was finally stopped from visiting and seeking further contact with Sathya Sai Baba, to whom he had written letters expressing his appreciation of the guru and his desire to visit him in India. When the UK authorities, including the Foreign Office and MI6 plus the Metropolitan Police, found that Sai Baba was under many clouds of suspicion for sexual abuses and cover-ups of many untoward incidents, including cold-blooded execution in his own apartment of four of his former Indian devotees, that an internal investigation was begun. One only has to know a little about the Royal Family to realise that, had the heir to the throne been publicly involved with this largely unexposed cult, what a huge furore would follow about it, with dire likely effects on the British constitution, the Royal Family and much besides. Therefore the investigations by the British authorities their subsequent pressures on the Palace to stop such developments had to be conducted in complete secrecy.

One may ask how therefore I can state such things, and I learnt of them. Firstly, the British security services investigated David Bailey, who had been a very close and privileged devotee of SB, whereupon he publicised many facts about their concerns and what measures were taken to isolate him from the Royal Family, who he knew and whose princes (William and Harry) he was teaching music. Secondly, we in the exposé had a secret source who had contact within royal circles, the Foreign Office, Parliament and other top institutions in London. His identity has been kept secret, due to his position and professional constraints. In this way we learned of some of the secret deals made between some UK and Indian authorities (including Tony Blair) and other matters concerning Sai Baba investigations.

Though Prince Charles’ fascination with Sai Baba and plans to visit him were eventually stymied, it did not stop the then-alienated and Royal divorced from Prince Andrew, Sarah Ferguson, from visiting Sai Baba, where she was ‘taken in’ as so many others were.

Charles and Diana rejected by Sathya Sai Baba

Posted by robertpriddy on March 28, 2009

prince-of-walesPrince Charles was keen to ‘have Swami’s darshan’ but never will

In 1996, Sai-devotee Robert Bruce told my wife and I that he had been present at an interview with Sathya Sai Baba where someone had asked him [SSB] about Charles and Diana and the possibility they might visit him. Sai Baba had replied “They are a disgrace to their country!” These were the verbatim words Robert Bruce reported to me! One may speculate as to why Sai Baba thought this… whether due to the separation or the scandalous leaked ‘phone calls between Prince Charles and Lady Parker-Bowles, or the talk of divorce (which SB strongly condemns) which later also occurred… or whatever else.

Why Sai Baba included Lady Diana when speaking ill of both royals, one does not know… could it have been envy of the way she was truly loved throughout the world ( by hundreds of millions, which Sai Baba is NOT, despite his boasting that he is!)   Sathya Sai Baba himself – and his blind followers – make preposterous claims about having 60 million devotees, sometimes multiples of this. For example, he claimed that 3 million came to his 70th birthday (which is patently absurd to those who can count heads properly and estimate a maximum of 300,000, and even his public relations office published 18,000 fro the total number of foreign visitors).

Prince Charles on a visit to Bangalore

In 1992 at Kodaikanal, Sai Baba gave a ‘privileged’ group of especially humble and admiring foreign devotees the apparent great blessing of attending his evening talks with students in his private summer residence there. V.K. Narsimhan was also present and spoke his piece, as did various others. (These talks and occasional singing etc. were recorded and issued on 6 cassettes, which contained nothing new or of any significance).

However, not included in the recordings was a report from a prominent Sai devotee he was asked to give by Sathya Sai Baba himself about Prince Charles. It was purposely edited out of the recordings. The Prince of Wales had recently having visited Bangalore (this was in 1990 or 1991), had said that he wanted to have “Swami’s darshan’”. Charles had been about to give an address to a conference when he heard that this gentleman was a close follower of Sathya Sai Baba. He took this man aside and questioned him for about half-an-hour. He was said to have told the man that he would visit Sai Baba at his ashram but for the UK Government, which was concerned about the security arrangements (and no doubt about much more). This seems like a very weak reason from the UK government, for here was Prince Charles, staying at a Bangalore hotel open to the public (the Windsor Castle) and moving about in South India without undue security problems. The select band of Western devotees who heard this included my former friends the US devotees Robert and Rita Bruce (who were then sharing accommodation in Kodaikanal with the then leader of the US Sai Organisation, Dr. J. Hislop). The recordings were made, edited and distributed by a most servile and blind believer in SB from Denmark, Erik Henriksen.

That Sathya Sai Baba thinks Charles and Diana ‘a disgrace to their country’, one would ask what of his own secret activities for which he dare not stand up and answer? Is this unaccountability in the face of such weighty charges of serial homosexual assaults – including defenseless minors in his colleges and in private interviews – and his widely reported complicity in cold-blooded murder not itself a major disgrace to India and a blot on the reputation of every leader, Prime Minister and President who worship, support and protect him? (see BBC’s ‘The Secret Swami’ in short clips and transcripts here)

Duchess of York, ‘Fergie’ visited Sai Baba

On this background, it is interesting that ‘Fergie,’ the Duchess of York, visited Sai Baba at his ashram (in early February 1997) and was directly granted two interviews, she evidently being a more important person for Sathya Sai Baba than ordinary devotees. This was reported in the UK and Indian press. A female devotee, Terrie, who has assisted with the Sunrise website wrote me, “I happened to be at the ashram during her visit, where the ladies were far more interested in having darshan of Fergie than darshan of Sathya Sai Baba. They not only craned their necks toward Fergie during darshan, they also lined up in front of her after darshan (right on the walkway Sai Baba takes when he leaves), with notebooks and pieces of paper in hand for her autograph. They almost gave Fergie as much adulation as they gave to their supposed God Incarnate, Sai Baba. Apropos, this accords with our own experiences of visits by the Indian President and Prime Minister, on whom all Indian eyes (and many foreigners’) were glued most of the time. One wonders if perhaps it can get routinely boring watching Sathya Sai Baba go through the same old darshan routines and extremely repetitive discourses day after day?

Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, and Sathya Sai Baba

Prince Charles & the Sai Baba connection

Prince Charles & the Sai Baba connection

Ever since I first joined the Sai Organisation in 1983, there were occasional flurries of rumours that Prince Charles had visited Sathya Sai Baba in secret during one of his several visits to India. One story told how Prince Charles was greeted during his wedding to Diana by a Sai devotee with the words ‘Sai Ram’ which – so the story goes – was acknowledged by HRH as he walked down the aisle! This is the kind of wishful thinking that Sai devotees believe and spread, along with no end of absurd claims and impossible stories, as a visit to Sai sites on the Internet soon clearly shows. However, it is known to many Sai devotees that the Indian immigrant, Manhubhai Patel of Wembley, has been sending books about Sathya Sai Baba to Prince Charles since the 1960s and that, as he told me himself, he has received letters of thanks for these from the Palace. He told me so himself when I visited his house as far back as 1986. The UK newspaper Daily Express published an unconfirmed report in 1990 that a representative of Prince Charles had written to Sai Baba requesting that the Prince could visit Sai Baba, and that this request had been turned down by a letter from the ashram authorities.

I later asked V.K. Narasimhan about this. Narasimhan (now deceased) was the journalist who – as Editor-in-Chief of the Indian Express Group – won India’s top journalistic award (the Goenka prize) for his brave and single-handed exposure of Indira Gandhi’s Emergency. Narasimhan then told me that Prince Charles had certainly never written to nor visited Sai Baba. However, some years later around 1996, he told me that a letter had been received by Sathya Sai Baba from Prince Charles, which Sai Baba had shown to him and asked him to answer. He was not allowed to tell the exact contents of that letter. He replied to Prince Charles and reminded him of his own journalistic meeting with him in India when the Prince was but a teenager. He had later received a friendly but also somewhat formal reply from the prince himself, as far as I recall the details. (see here)

Of course, it is well known (and much publicised by the Sai movement!) that Keith Crichlow, the man who was urged to visit Sai Baba by Isaac Tigrett of Hard Rock Café fame (as interviewed on BBC TV about Sai Baba) who was the the donor of US $49 million for a ‘Super-Speciality’ Hospital near Puttaparthi ($15 million disappeared – embezzled by Sai officials!). Crichlow was induced by Sai Baba into designing the Hospital (partly modelled on the lines of Buckingham Palace), and then became a close associate of Prince Charles, who was later made head of the Prince of Wales’ Institute of Architecture in the UK. Keith Crichlow is still a visitor to Sai Baba in India and is still also connected with Prince Charles. Her had related on a film how was bowled over by Sai Baba’s  “numerology” which consists in  superficial  and simplistic ideas about the supposed spiritual significance of numbers long known to many Indians interested in gurus and also to many numerologists… numerology is a bogus ‘pseudo-sceince’ if ever there was one.
