UP-DATE: What must be very near to being India’s least successful film in recent years is the long heralded  ‘Satya Sai Baba’ by Atman Films with Anup Jalota as a self-satisfied Bollywood and bowdlerised version of Sathya Sai Baba’s life and message. It appeared as a trailer review (8 mins. 15 secs, which was more than enough. Videos were to be found with  ‘First Look Launch’ of the film, and it was claimed that  in May 2014. Who knows where? Two years later, we are now told by The Asian Age that it will be released shortly. What the right-wing fanatical Shiv Sena has to do with it is anybody’s guess. Perhaps they bought it for a song. Previously I wrote:-

The Sai Baba imitator Anup Jalota talks in Hindi  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LcCF0ZiGcI and apparently says “We made this film with zero percent pressure. I’ve known Baba for 50 years, I saw him, met him, went with him, I was so happy to make it with Baba’s blessings, I didn’t act, the director didn’t direct, it was all Baba; this film is like a meditation, we made a beautiful film…”  It is of poor technical quality with major dropouts of colouring and missing sound track problems. As a former follower, I am almost sorry for the remaining devotees that their god should be so thoroughly destroyed filmatically. While Hollywood could distort reality and over-romanticise everything, this film has managed to pervert the “godman’s” extraordinary life and times into a gaping emptiness of false sentiment, ham acting, cloying schmaltz and superficial portrayal. The main actor Jalota looks like a pakora-fed version of Sai Baba with nothing much else but similar gestures, a somewhat dead presence with a voice (speaking Hindi rather than Telugu) hardly reminiscent of Sai Baba’s high-pitched tones. Some short clips of dancing with rows of houri like ‘devotees’ lined up before the Avatar – artificial and pseudo-sexy – in my time there could well have got them rounded up in the proper and correct ashram and hounded out unmercifully… at least during my times there up to 1998.

Former privileged long-term Prashanthi resident but now totally disaffected US devotee, Eileen Weed, comments on the film::-

“Wow – what hilarity! It is a wonder that this film was made with such a low budget that the ‘special effect’ miracles are laughably pathetic! The acting is stiff, the dancing weird, the dialogue necessarily full of cliches. Furthermore, the sound of the trailer seems to go out at 2:22 until the end. Where was the Trust with their massive finances to make it a testament to Divinity?” The actions of the ‘sb’ cannot help but show closely what sb did in real life: wave his hands to pretend to create objects, bless people, speak spiritual clichés, and not much else.”

That such commercial interests, totally unconvincing as regards spirituality should release this, is akin to tramping on the grave of Sai Baba. No doubt, Bollywood false acting has its many adherents among Indians nonetheless,  but those who may like this live in a bubble of unreality far removed from the message Sathya Sai Baba said he wanted to convey. Judging by the trailer, to say that this film is a wooden turkey would be to show disrespect to the entire species of wooden turkey films. Sathya as a child is unconvincing and his mother is far too glam. The travesty continues with overacted parts as devotees. With all respects, had Sathya Sai Baba been so dull as shown, he could never have attracted anyone, at least certainly not from abroad. The only bits that ring true are the short clips taken from films and videos of the actual Sai Baba and devotees, mixed in to help out. Interestingly, only three Western devotees appear on the trailer – shown in the front row at darsan;  all three Norwegian ladies who as leader in Norway I knew well for years, and all of whom left Sathya Sai Baba around year 2000 in sheer disgust due to his sex abuses!

The immediate mid-air materialisation miracles during the Vedic yagna ritual as contrived on film were never witnessed as such in the real events – sheer invention! Some outward shows of emotional ‘spirituality’ – beloved of so many Indians – could not even be compared to a Disney fantasy on a truly awful day. Fake wigs are in evidence – but then Sai Baba sometimes wore then too.

Not unexpectedly the film avoids the many hidden truths about the real Sathya Sai Baba and the gruesome and humiliating aspects of end of his life, drugged, starved down to ca. 30 kgs, kept alive on life support until satisfactory for propaganda and security.  The trailer is now to be seen on YouTube (http://youtu.be/n_5QIyjCa6U?list=PLjLZwhxKjNfYMohlf09nZ3P-P0o6kglgI).

The film is not for foreign release, the paucity of non-ethnic foreigners ensures that. And where is the confabulating ex-millionaire Isaac Tigrett? Where is the Prashanthi Christmas procession and choir, or the classical David Bailey. What became of the armed security guards and their metal detector entrance gates? Guess why there is no mention of the great devotees Idi Amin, Bettino Craxi, Rolf Harris and other famous criminals? And are even the all-dancing-all-singing Professors Anil Kumar and G. Venkataraman missing? We shall see whether the film eventually becomes a roaring hit in India… in which case it would forever warn any normal person off the self-proclaimed Creator of the Universe and Deity of All Deities to reconsider his claimed omnipotence yet again.

A genuine and live film which shows Prashanthi Nilayam and Sathya Sai properly was the BBC’s documentary ‘The Secret Swami’ (see overview here and watch on-line here)

Rolf Harris could not lie his way out of prison sentence

Dana Gillespie and Rolf Harris perform devotional song to the 'one god'

Dana Gillespie and Rolf Harris perform devotional song to the ‘one god’

Unlike Sai Baba, Rolf Harris was unable – despite his fame and popularity – to escape the consequences of his lustful crimes. Though he knew Queen Elisabeth, Prince Charles and most of the prominent figures in UK and in much of the world too, he was finally caught out. He threw his weight about, even in court (singing etc.) and towards his accusers who he slandered most mendaciously and showed not a shred of contrition. His sentence of 5 years 9 month caused many to complain as far too light considering his despicable behaviour. His worship of the serial sex abuser of young boys and men Sai Baba – who always cunningly promised protection to all his devotees – did not save him from prosecution and prison. Harris “claimed the guru’s teachings had transformed his life and played his famous didgeridoo on a fund-raising CD of mystic chants.” Unlike Sai Baba, he did not have the Prime Minister, President, Supreme Court Chief Justices as his devoted worshippers, so the charges against him were not quashed (as they were across the board for Sai Baba by PM Narasimha Rao, Home Minister S.B. Chavan with the aid of former ex-Chief Justice Bhagwati (his devoted servant).

Defenders of Sai Baba take note! Many comments by devotees in denial and his Hindu endorsers have said that all the good works Sai Baba did were enough to show that he was good, but they never wanted to know about the tremendous life suffering and also suicides that came of his sex abuses.
Compare this ‘excuse’ with what his defending attorney said to Harris, “In the course of his 60 years in the entertainment business he has given much of his spare time freely and unstintingly to a variety of charitable causes with no complaint about his behaviour.” In sentencing Harris, the judge said: “You have been the recipient of a number of honours and awards over the years, you have done many good and charitable works and numerous people have attested to your positive good character. But the verdicts of the jury show that in the period from 1969 to 1986 you were also a sex offender, committing 12 indecent assaults on four victims who were variously aged between eight and 19 at the time. He went on: “You have shown no remorse for your crimes at all. Your reputation lies in ruins, you have been stripped of your honours, but you have no one to blame but yourself.” (source

The UK authorities – police, courts, politicians and all under their jurisdiction are at long last catching up with and acting upon the realisation that people in high places can be extreme and serial sexual abusers. This initiates a genuine revolution in the treatment of women as equals, which has been far less than the case since time began, depriving them of basic human rights and justice, especially where sexual matters are concerned. The same is occurring as regards the abuse of boys by men, which has been shown to be extremely widespread, with the Roman Catholic Church as one several of the worst offending religious institutions (still dragging its feet wherever possible!). Britain is once again in the forefront of the world as regards taking most serious allegations seriously (at last) and actually bringing pedophiles and sexual abusers to justice. Among countries at the other extreme end of the scale is India, where the whole issue has been totally taboo until very recently, and which is still one of the worst examples of impunity for such criminals (especially when they claim to be ‘godmen’ or ‘godwomen’). Women in India are up against a massive, almost wall-to-wall male chauvinism, with even elected politicians (including PMs and Presidents) endorsing and/defending those who were or are known perpetrators of most heinous sexual crimes (Sathya Sai Baba, Asaram Bapu for a start). Major Government research with Help the Children and UNICEF has proved that sexual abuse of underage girls and boys is rife in India, yet cases are very few and convictions are utterly minimal! It is known worldwide that the rape and murder of defenceless women and even young girls is not even followed up by the police in many cases and the increasingly outraged population are given many promises which seldom lead to satisfactory indictments of all involved (esp. the police) and no apparent improvement in the male-dominant culture as a whole.

Sathya Sai Baba dared not sue ‘Sunday People’ newspaper

Posted by robertpriddy on June 17, 2010

Since the exposure of Sathya Sai Baba took off in 2000, all British newspapers – as well as the BBC – have taken a united stand against Sathya Sai Baba, not least because of the common knowledge that he and his minions tried hard to ensnare Prince Charles, despite the god-guru having denounced them in a private interview (see here).

Had Sathya Sai Baba been innocent of the many allegations against him, it would have been easy for him or his organization to sue the forthright report in the UK newspaper, Sunday People, on grounds of libel, which is a simpler process in UK than in most other Western democracies. Of course, no litigation of any kind has ever been initiated against any of the world-wide reports of his activities, though threats have been made now and again (which proved empty). Seeing the enormous funds he rules over, the public can only draw the conclusion that he and his followers know well that he would lose any such court case. There are numerous sworn testimonies on sexual abuse in safe keeping in the event of any such attempt to attack his critics, who have kept the revelations about him and his countless deceptions alive on the Internet for the past decade. Sathya Sai Baba is protected by the Indian Government and judiciary against any lawsuit in India, since – an amazing fact in itself – the past several Presidents and Prime Ministers of India have been his feet-worshipping devotees!
Here is the Sunday People article:-

Paedophile Guru in bid to snare Charles Sunday People U.K. – March 12, 2001

MI6 are probing bizarre sect’s link with the Royals

A PERVERT guru who believes he can sexually abuse young boys because he is GOD has tried to lure Prince Charles into his sinister religious sect. He has enlisted some of the Prince’s closest associates in his move – and the future King has admitted he has considered meeting the swami. Yet we can reveal the FBI and police forces round the world and even a senior UN organisation are already investigating millionaire mystic Sai Baba over scores of alleged sex and other crimes. Now MI6 are probing his bizarre movement’s links with Buckingham Palace.

Pot-bellied

For, the Sunday People can reveal, he planned to increase his worldwide influence by converting Charles into one of his millions of followers. The tiny pot-bellied holy man – who wears orange frocks and sports a 70s-style Afro hairdo – enlisted the help of one of the prince’s most-trusted advisors. He hoped that architect Professor Keith Critchlow would be able to persuade Charles to visit his temple, or “ashram”, in southern India.

Amazingly, we have obtained a copy of a letter which Charles wrote to another of Baba’s high-powered disciples within royal circles. In it, he says: “Keith (Critchlow) has often told me about Sai Baba and the effect he has had on many people and it is wonderful to know of the difference he has made to your life. “Perhaps I will be able to meet him one day when the time is right.”

The letter is signed: “Yours most sincerely, Charles.”

At the time, the prince was unaware that Sai Baba was being investigated for sex crimes. Nor did he know that there were also allegations of fraud and widespread financial corruption. UNESCO has also withdrawn support for a conference they were going to co-organise with Sai Baba. And the Foreign Office is now warning British travellers to India to be wary of the group. A senior legal figure linked to Sai Baba’s victims discovered the guru’s plan to target the prince and alerted M16. Sai Baba, the son of a humble peasant farmer, has a massive worldwide following, including at least 40,000 supporters in the UK.

Millions of families with children flock to his luxurious temple, near Bangalore in southern India, to pay homage. But to gain respectability for his movement, Sai Baba has deliberately set out to target showbiz stars, leading politicians, and royals as VIP supporters. Among them is 70-year-old Animal Hospital presenter and children’s favourite Rolf Harris. He claimed the guru’s teachings had transformed his life and played his famous didgeridoo on a fund-raising CD of mystic chants. Another disciple is British blues singer Dana Gillespie. But Sai Baba’s biggest dream was to ensnare a member of the British Royal Family.

Concert pianist David Bailey, who got involved with the movement during the early 90s, told how he and Prof Critchlow held several meetings in India with the guru. And one time Critchlow asked him: “Isn’t it time for me to bring Prince Charles out to see you?”

Bailey said: “The organisation loved to get celebrities in the fold. They were invited to Baba’s birthday parties.   “At the time I was completely besotted and like other devotees thought I’d win brownie points by recruiting influential people.”

Brainwashing

Bailey even tried to “hook” Prince Andrew and Fergie before their marriage broke up. He said: “I had been asked to organise an evening of music at their home and, to put it bluntly, planned to start brainwashing them. “But the evening was cancelled at the last minute.” Fergie did later pay Sai Baba a private visit in 1997 on the recommendation of a stress counsellor following her marriage break-up. The guru likes to amaze followers by passing off cheap conjuring tricks as “miracles” and producing watches and jewellery out of thin air. And he astonished Fergie by making the bangle appear apparently from nowhere.

Bailey finally turned his back on the sect after learning the disgusting truth about Sai Baba’s sexual perversions. He has spent the last two years exposing the bogus holy man, who likes to rub oil into boys’ genitals claiming it helps release their sexual tension. Bailey, who once worked as a music teacher at the Indian temple, explained: “To my horror, I found out he was a homosexual paedophile.” Now every attempt is being made to ensure Sai Baba is kept away from Charles and other royals.
