THE SATHYA SAI SECT WAS AND REMAINS A CULT

Posted by robertpriddy on September 10, 2018

Various analyses were forwarded during Baba’s lifetime to show that he was the head of a personality cult, and one which – though not of the most extreme sort – had too many features of religious cults in general. The Organisation tried to defuse the criticism by posting a very selective list of saying of Sai Baba which seemed to point towards the opposite. However, these were merely sayings, while the issue could only be decided by studying actual facts and acts, not mere words.
A useful documentation of quotations by Sathya Sai Baba (SSB) show how eight characteristics of cults as defined various by Lowell Streiker and J. Melton are fulfilled by the requirements on which Sai Baba insisted must apply to members of his organization. (Source books: Mindbending: Brainwashing, Cults, and Deprogramming in the ’80s (by Lowell D. Streiker, Doubleday, New York, 1984) Encyclopedic Handbook of Cults in America (by J. Melton, Garland Publishing, New York, 1986).

The definition of a cult given by West and Langone, 1986, is in general accordance with the present viewpoint:- “A cult is a group or movement exhibiting a great or excessive devotion or dedication to some person, idea, or thing and employing unethically manipulative techniques of persuasion and control (e.g., isolation from former friends and family, debilitation, the use of special methods to heighten suggestibility and subservience, powerful group pressures, information management, suspension of individual critical judgment, promotion of total dependency on the group and fear of leaving it, etc. designed to advance the goals of the group’s leaders to the actual or possible detriment of members, their families, or the community.”

A ‘spiritual’ ideology which gains strong enough initial impetus from positive ideals and socially constructive achievements to consolidate itself will – if successful in terms of numbers of participants, funding etc., eventually comes under pressures from factions within or from the social environment which lead to corruption and crime. This may lead to a closing in of the movement to protect itself, to use clandestine methods and blanket censorship to hide its deficiencies (which would affect recruitment, donations, status and influence).

Some thinkers insist that one must observe and classify the group’s behaviour, its explicit and implicit rules and how they are enforced, but thereby fail sufficiently to consider those features of a belief system. At the outset, what seem reasonable requirements on followers and the moral theory they should follow draw the initiate gradually further into a labyrinth of doctrine which subtly induces self-indoctrination involving gradually giving up of more and more of personal autonomy and individual rights. As already suggested, this interiorized doctrine (which is ‘in’-doctrined) is the sine qua non of most cults, for those which control people without them having at least initially accepted some of the beliefs, premises or rules would not be cultist as such.

Each of the following numbered points is to be compared with the quotes of Sai Baba which indicate that th point applies to his mission.

1. Primary cult activities are fund raising and recruiting new members.

Money is meant for sacrifice.” (SSB 15 May 2000 Summer Discourses)
Even small offerings by devotees with a pure heart can earn great rewards.
Money increases only when you spend it.” ( SSB Date:10 Feb 2000 Mass Upanayanam)
You will see in due course that even the blind declare, “Swami is God”.”
Bear all and do nothing; Hear all and say nothing; Give all and take nothing; Serve all and be nothing.

2. Cult members are encouraged to cut off communication with family and friends. They are to be isolated from the outside world and any reality testing it could provide.

“Reduce contacts to the minimum”. [Ref:Sathya Sai Speaks Vol V p 245]
You should have control over your speech. Excessive talk will lead to untruth and unpleasantness.” ( SSB Date:10 Feb 2000)
I insist on silence. Talk less, talk low when you must talk.” [Ref:Sathya Sai Speaks Vol III p.9]
You can discover your own truth, only when you are alone with yourself and there is silence all around you”. [Ref: Sathya Sai Speaks Vol IV p.56]

3. Cult members hand over possessions and earnings and become totally dependent on the group.

The Gayatri Mantra teaches that you should offer everything to God“. ( SSB Date:10 Feb 2000 Occasion:Mass Upanayanam)
“You will give up “individual discrimination“. [Ref:Bhagavan’s discourse at Brindavan May 24, 1992]
Man has to pay attention to three basic duties in his quest for happiness: He has to give up what he has to give up, namely material desires and pursuits.” [Ref:Voice of the Avatar – Part I, page 159]
For everything you see, hear, smell, taste or touch belongs to me.” (A letter written by Swami many years ago to his students)
Who is Bhagavan (God)? ‘Bha’ means effulgence. ‘Bha’ means the one who is in control”. (2000)
If you call yourself a devotee of Swami, act according to Swami’s expectation”. (1999)

4. The cult enforces demands by peer pressure, embarrassment, and even violence.

Swami too stops talking to you if you do not follow His teachings“. (SSB Date:14 Jan 2000 Occasion: Sankranthi ).
If you are good, I will certainly yield to your request“. (SSB Date:14 Jan 2000 Occasion:Sankranthi)
You cannot escape Me or do anything in secret. It is a big mistake to consider yourself one of wisdom. Ignorance follows you like a shadow in all that you do“. (1999)
I am aware of the past, present, and future, of your innermost thoughts and carefully guarded secrets“. (SSB 09/10/1970)
Likewise, tell your eyes to see God instead of watching unsacred things on the Television or Video. Teach your ears to listen to the stories of the Lord instead of listening to vain gossip“. (2000)

5. The cult is the only possessor of truth—others are unsaved and hostile to truth.

“You have to bear in mind while repeating the Sai Name, that is when you take that Name, you must feel that it is only by His Will and Power that you are doing so, and not by your own“. January 14, 1975 (Sankranthi)
Do not allow doubt to distract you; if only you will install in the altar of your heart steady faith in My Divinity, you can win a vision of My Reality. Get immersed in Sai Baba. Half-heartedness, hesitation, doubt, cynicism, listening to tales, all are of no avail. Your good fortune, which will provide you this chance, is greater than that which was available for anchorites, monks, sages, saints, and even personalities embodying facets of Divine Glory. Do not allow doubt to distract you. I never utter a word that does not have significance.” (1999)
There is no need to go outside the Sai fold”. (2000) “Students! Have friendship with God for which you should be prepared to sacrifice everything, even your body and life”. (1999)
“Do not listen to any words of ill-will or disparagement of anybody
“.

6. The cult feels above the law—the ends justify the means.

My will must prevail over every obstacle.” (discourse on 9/10/1970)
I do not have a time schedule to adhere to nor can any law bind me“. (Sai Vandana, 142)
What I will, must take place; what I plan must succeed. I am an example, and an inspiration, whatever I do or omit to do“. (discourse on 11/10/1970)
If you call yourself a devotee of Swami, act according to Swami’s expectation“. (1999)

7. The cult may be apocalyptic–others are unsaved and hostile to truth.

Who is Bhagavan (God)? …’Bha’ means the one who is in control“. (1999)
For, he who is righteous will be guarded from harm, by righteousness itself; he who is unrighteous will fall into disaster through the evil that he perpetrates. Everything points to the terror of conflagration coming; and my mission is to preempt the fires by reestablishing dharma. You are all singularly fortunate, therefore, do not let this opportunity slip through your hands“. (see http://www.cosmicharmony.com/Av/SatyaS2/SatyaS2.htm)

8. The cult is based on the teachings of an authoritarian, corrupt leader who is the sole source of what the group believes and rules for daily behavior.

Surrender implies that the ‘individual will’ should become one with the ‘Divine Will’s. Obey the Divine Command implicitly without questioning. That is the sign of true devotion. Whatever God does is for your good“. (SSB Date:14 Jan 2000 )
There are many who observe My actions and start declaring that My nature is such and such. They are unable to gauge that sanctity, the majesty, and the eternal reality that is Me. The power of Sai is limitless; it manifests forever. All forms of power are resident in this Sai palm“. (SSB)
Each word of Mine has immense value associated with it. I will fulfil your wish only when you obey My command“. ( SSB Date:14 Jan 2000 )
There exists no such person who can point any kind of blemish in Sai”. (SSB discourse on 23-11-1979) The letters SSS stand for Sri Sathya Sai. Everything is contained in this name.” (SSB Date: 12 Apr 2000 Occasion: Sri Rama Navami)
I am Absolute Consciousness. (SSB Date: 12 Apr 2000 Occasion: Sri Rama Navami) Criticism is nothing but the reflection, reaction and resound of one’s own wicked qualities. The bad qualities that one sees in others are nothing but the reflection of one’s own inner feelings. So, one has no right to find fault in others. He is the worst sinner who looks for mistakes in others”. (SSB 2000) “Put all your faith in Me. I shall guide and guard you“.

A devotee reports on Sathya Sai Baba’s appeal and reputation

Posted by robertpriddy on November 17, 2009

Excerpt from a web page by  N. Bhanutej of Puttaparthi
From a handful in the 1960s, Sai Baba’s following today is anywhere between one crore and five crore.
Sai Baba did not answer his critics. Narasimhaiah did not get an interview. But in a discourse, Baba said: “It is beyond you to know how or why I create things. The objects that I create, I create them by my will, the same way I created the universe”. Even now, devotees elbow each other during the darshans, hoping to touch his feet or get invited to a private session where Sai Baba usually ‘materialises’ gifts.”

Interesting that the estimate here by a Sai supporter of Sai Baba’s ‘following’ (which is a very vague term indeed) of “between 10 million and 50 million” is far, far below what is claimed by the majority of pro-Sai authors, web loggers, and organization websites. (The Swedish website has for years even claims there are 300 million devotees – which is, of course, sheer fantasy). Sai Baba’s preposterous claim the he created the Universe should need no comment, but the fact that there are so many who believe him requires that his many deceptions and fraudulence be documented and discussed, as is done on this blog site and many other exposé sites.

In 1978, the revolutionary balladeer Gaddar penned and popularised a song ridiculing Sai Baba. He told THE WEEK: “In India, you can exploit people in two ways. One, if you have the capital to invest. Two, you invest in the ignorance of the people and exploit them through superstition.” Though Gaddar’s song became popular, the queues outside Prashanthi Nilayam and Brindavan, his ashram in Whitefield, Bangalore, kept growing longer.

On November 23, 1992, the Deccan Chronicle carried a photograph from a TV footage of Baba taking a gold chain from his private staff before ‘materialising’ it. On June 6, 1993, six inmates of the inner circle of Prashanthi Nilayam died in Sai Baba’s bedroom. Two of them had allegedly made an attempt on Baba’s life. The other four were gunned down by the police, apparently in self defence. The facts of the case were never brought to light.

This says a great deal about the unaccountability of this cult. Sathya Sai Baba has managed, both through his appeal to ideals of ancient Hinduism and India’s inherent spiritual greatness but not least through his accumulation of great wealth by donations, to gain major political influence. He cannot be brought to justice in India because he has protection at the very highest levels of the government and the judiciary, whose prestige was long since invested in him (before the facts about his abuses began to emerge due to the Internet).

The most serious of charges of sexual abuse came from several of his western young male devotees. A book by Tal Brooks titled Avatar of Night describes the author’s quest for God, his seeking Sai Baba and his disillusionment when he was sexually exploited. With the advent of the Internet, disillusioned young men narrated more stories of abuse. Interestingly, there are devotees who justify the alleged sexual acts as Baba’s way of ‘correcting’ the kundalini of the devotee. [SEE HERE]

Unesco, not willing to accept this explanation, withdrew from a conference on education in September 2000, which it was cosponsoring with the Sathya Sai Organisation in Puttaparthi. The grounds: “Deeply concerned about widely reported allegations of sexual abuse involving youth and children.”‘

UNESCO has never had anything to do with Sathya Sai Baba since 2000, not has any other UN institution. The Indian authorities tried hard, through their representatives in UNESCO (Shashi Taroor) and through ministerial interventions to get the advisory warning against Sai Baba removed. When it was no longer on the UNESCO site, but only in the archive, this indicates their pressures succeeded… however, when the BBC investigated they were assured by an UNESCO official that the advisory was simply removed as part of a standard updating of the website (see here)

How Dave Lyons realised the Sai movement is really a cult

Posted by robertpriddy on August 31, 2009

By David J. Lyons (Sai Baba follower from 1981 to 2000. Ex-President of the Center of Greater New Orleans). Date: 03-13-05

No one wants to believe that an organization he/she was an integral part of is a cult. I could not have been basking more in the glory of the avatar with such vigor, such pride, such enthusiasm as I was in those last five years, 1995-2000. Not only did I believe all the stories coming out of Puttaparthi, I actually repeated them to my colleagues, friends and relatives. The only thing I did not do was try to recruit new members for the Sathya Sai Organization. I believed that Sathya Sai Baba was calling devotees at his pleasure, at their karmic level, and, most importantly, at his omniscience. I believed that a majority of the world’s population would come to honor him as avatar before his passing in 2022. I was happy that I was one of the early ones. Such was my position and feelings and beliefs–until it all came crashing down.

From April, 2000, until early July, 2000, I was sending emails, and snail mail to those who did not have computers–all pertaining to the sexual crimes and the murders at the ashram on June 6, 1993. All I wanted was for them to take an objective look at the mounting evidence, to talk to some of the victims of Sathya Sai Baba’s sexual molestations. In this time period many were coming forward with their stories. The posting of THE FINDINGS on the Internet was the triggering mechanism for creating courage among many molested ones, and a personal hand-written letter from a teen victim, sent to all the presidents of U.S. Centers, was devastating. When I saw that most of our devotees, the majority who were from India, would not even contemplate taking even so much as a peek at anything negative regarding SSB’s criminal actions, I was astounded. The term “cult” had not entered my mind until much later in the year of 2000.

In July, 2000, Al Rahm and wife Marisa came to New Orleans for a convention. We renewed our friendship, I showed them the town, and we had heart to heart talks. There was another devotee couple here who had defected and we all had dinner together. Al had then introduced me to Glen Meloy, via email, who was forming a support group. I was happy to become part of this group as I felt like the Lone Ranger battling the likes of Michael Goldstein et al. During this time period I was gratified to hear of the resignation of Shirley Pike, who had been the president of the North Central Region of USA. We (myself and a few other devotees from the New Orleans Center) had begun making trips to St. Louis for the Memorial Day retreats when the North and South Central Regions did a combined retreat just outside of St. Louis, Missouri. When the new South Central Region was carved from the states of Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma (1997), some members of our Center still made the trip to St. Louis, and to Texas for our regular Labor Day retreat. As for as I know, I was the only Center president to resign and defect, and Shirley and Rick Raines were the only Regional presidents to resign and defect–both from the North and South Central Regions.

The impetus for this Revisited and Revised Spiritual Odyssey was the memory of Glen Meloy, who died on New Year’s Day, 2005. I had spoken to Glen for the last time just after Thanksgiving of 2004. He was in terrible pain. Glen’s contact for updates was the other worldwide leader of the Expose`, Barry Pittard. Glen and I had spoke many times since that initial contact in July, 2000. He gave his last ounce of energy and courage in a superlative effort to protect children and teens from being molested by SSB, and he was making great progress in several areas of the Exposé. Barry’s efforts have been marvelous also. It was Barry who carried the sad news to me and many other former devotees–all who had developed a network to bring justice for the crimes of SSB.

Glen Meloy was a devotee of Sathya Sai Baba for 26 years, and during that time he gave freely of his time in many categories, managing the book center for America in Tustin, California, among many other volunteered seva (service). We had long conversations about the ones who remained loyal to Sai Baba, and we were especially shocked at the complicity of Jack Hislop, who had been on the receiving end of so many hand-written letters from Sathya Sai Baba. Jack had known since the 1970s of the molestations. Jack Hislop was the most-liked of the highest-ranking devotees of the planet. I sure liked him a lot, so when I discovered he had known all along (note: he died before the big scandal broke open) I was filled with chagrin. We were incredulous about many other high-ranking office bearers here in USA not willing to look at any evidence, not willing to talk to some of the victims, not willing to admit that these sexual molestations were crimes–all because they believed that the avatar could do what he wanted to, that he was above the laws – and morality. Very soon we realized we were part of a very subtle cult, a cult of personality involving a very charismatic guru who had, at least in part and in the past, powerful paranormal attributes.

Is the Sathya Sai Organization not a cult?

Posted by robertpriddy on January 7, 2009

A cult is a group or movement exhibiting a great or excessive devotion or dedication to some person, idea, or thing and employing unethically manipulative techniques of persuasion and control (e.g., isolation from former friends and family, debilitation, the use of special methods to heighten suggestibility and subservience, powerful group pressures, information management, suspension of individual critical judgment, promotion of total dependency on the group and fear of leaving it, etc. designed to advance the goals of the group’s leaders to the actual or possible detriment of members, their families…
(West & Langone, 1986).

The above is an almost perfect description of the Sathya Sai movement. Here is also some of the systematic study done on the Sathya Sai Organization:-

1. Primary cult activities are fund raising and recruiting new members.
Sathya Sai says:
Money increases only when you spend it.” ( SSB Date:10 Feb 2000 Mass Upanayanam)
Money is meant for sacrifice.” (SSB 15 May 2000 Summer Discourses)
I call upon you to radiate the Devotion within you so that its unseen power will envelop all who come into your orbit.
You will see in due course that even the blind declare, “Swami is God”.”
Even small offerings by devotees with a pure heart can earn great rewards.
Bear all and do nothing; Hear all and say nothing; Give all and take nothing; Serve all and be nothing.”

2. Cult members are encouraged to cut off communication with family and friends. They are isolated from the outside world and any reality testing it could provide.
Sathya Sai says:
You should have control over your speech. Excessive talk will lead to untruth and unpleasantness.” ( SSB Date:10 Feb 2000 Occasion:Mass Upanayanam)
You have been given eyes not for roaming around and seeing anything and everything whatsoever.” (SSB 15 May 2000 Summer Discourses)
I insist on silence. Talk less, talk low when you must talk.” [Ref:Sathya Sai Speaks Vol III p.9]
Reduce contacts to the minimum”. [Ref:Sathya Sai Speaks Vol V p 245]
You can discover your own truth, only when you are alone with yourself and there is silence all around you“. [Ref: Sathya Sai Speaks Vol IV p.56]
Do not be led away by the scorn of others, or by the recommendations of others.” [Ref: Sathya Sai Speaks Vol IV p 366]
To successfully perform your part always remain centered upon me. Seek out your faults and others’ merits. Seeking others’ faults is dire sin. Follow the Master; Face the devil; Fight to the end; Finish the goal.

3. Cult members hand over possessions and earnings and become totally dependent on group.
Sathya Sai says:
The Gayatri Mantra teaches that you should offer everything to God“. ( SSB Date:10 Feb 2000 Occasion:Mass Upanayanam)
You will give up “individual discrimination“.
For everything you see, hear, smell, taste or touch belongs to me.” (A letter written by Swami many years ago to students of His Institute)
Who is Bhagavan (God)? ‘Bha’ means effulgence. ‘Bha’ means the one who is in control“. (2000)
If you call yourself a devotee of Swami, act according to Swami’s expectation“. (1999)

4. The cult enforces demands by peer pressure, embarrassment, and even violence.(Note however that violence is not a common feature of the ashrams or movement around Sai Baba generally, since he preaches non-violence. However, it does occur sometimes, as in the case of executions of four devotees in 1993)
Sathya Sai says:
You should have firm faith that whatever happens is good for you“. (SSB Date:14 Jan 2000 Occasion:Sankranthi )
Swami too stops talking to you if you do not follow His teachings“. (SSB Date:14 Jan 2000 Occasion: Sankranthi ).
If you are good, I will certainly yield to your request“. (SSB Date:14 Jan 2000 Occasion:Sankranthi )
You cannot escape Me or do anything in secret.” (1999)
I am aware of the past, present, and future, of your innermost thoughts and carefully guarded secrets“. (SSB 09/10/1970)
Likewise, tell your eyes to see God instead of watching unsacred things on the Television or Video. Teach your ears to listen to the stories of the Lord instead of listening to vain gossip“. (2000)

5. The cult is the only possessor of truth—others are unsaved and hostile to truth.
Sathya Sai says:
It is a big mistake to consider yourself one of wisdom. Ignorance follows you like a shadow in all that you do”. (1999)
You have to bear in mind while repeating the Sai Name, that is when you take that Name, you must feel that it is only by His Will and Power that you are doing so, and not by your own“. January 14, 1975 (Sankranthi)
Do not allow doubt to distract you; if only you will install in the altar of your heart steady faith in My Divinity, you can win a vision of My Reality. I have come to instruct all in the essence of the Vedas, to shower on all this precious gift, to protect the Sanathana Dharma, the ancient wisdom, and preserve it. Get immersed in Sai Baba. Half-heartedness, hesitation, doubt, cynicism, listening to tales, all are of no avail. Concentrated complete faith – that alone can bring victory. Your good fortune, which will provide you this chance, is greater than that which was available for anchorites, monks, sages, saints, and even personalities embodying facets of Divine Glory. Do not allow doubt to distract you; if only you will install in the altar of your heart steady faith in My Divinity, you can win a vision of My Reality. I never utter a word that does not have significance. Swami has nothing to do with internet. Not only now, even in future also. You should not indulge in such wrong activities”. (1999)
“There is no need to go outside the Sai fold”. (2000) “Students! Have friendship with God for which you should be prepared to sacrifice everything, even your body and life”. (1999) “You have to abandon bad thoughts, bad company, bad habits and everything that is bad”. (2000) “Do not listen to any words of ill-will or disparagement of anybod
y”.

6. The cult feels above the law—the ends justify the means.
Sathya Sai says:
My will must prevail over every obstacle.” (discourse on 9/10/1970)
I do not have a time schedule to adhere to nor can any law bind me“. (Sai Vandana, 142)
For the protection of the virtuous, for the destruction of evil-doers and for establishing righteousness on a firm footing, I incarnate from age to age.” (SSB)
What I will, must take place; what I plan must succeed. I am an example, and an inspiration, whatever I do or omit to do“. (discourse on 11/10/1970)

7. The cult may be apocalyptic–others are unsaved and hostile to truth.
Sathya Sai says:

Sathya Sai says:
Likewise, tell your eyes to see God instead of watching unsacred things on the Television or Video. Teach your ears to listen to the stories of the Lord instead of listening to vain gossip“. (2000)
Surrender implies that the ‘individual will’ should become one with the ‘Divine Will’s. Obey the Divine Command implicitly without questioning. That is the sign of true devotion. Whatever God does is for your good“. (SSB Date:14 Jan 2000 Occasion:Sankranthi )
( SSB Date:14 Jan 2000 Occasion: Sankranthi )
There exists no such person who can point any kind of blemish in Sai“. (SSB discourse on 23-11-1979)
The letters SSS stand for Sri Sathya Sai. Everything is contained in this name.” (SSB Date: 12 Apr 2000 Occasion: Sri Rama Navami)
I am Absolute Consciousness.” (SSB Date: 12 Apr 2000 Occasion: Sri Rama Navami) “Criticism is nothing but the reflection, reaction and resound of one’s own wicked qualities. The bad qualities that one sees in others are nothing but the reflection of one’s own inner feelings. So, one has no right to find fault in others. He is the worst sinner who looks for mistakes in others”. (SSB 2000) “Put all your faith in Me. I shall guide and guard you”.”

If anyone can read this and not realise what a huge con it is, then they are surely beyond reason and help. It is at once both amusing and a concern to think of all the pompous politicians in India – Prime Ministers and Presidents – who worship this megalomaniac claimant!
