Yet more Sai Baba illicit valuables found

Posted by robertpriddy on July 20, 2011

The 4th round of searches were carried out yesterday, this time in Poornachandra Hall rooms and few rooms in the second wing of the palatial Yajur mandir. Total haul was around 740 kgs of silver, 2 diamond studded gold crowns, heavy cash, and thousands of expensive silk clothes. These were illicitly collected because all donations had to be recorded and all monies had to be submitted via cheque. No record or cheques exist!

At the moment, the complete seizure in 4 rounds adds to more than 150 kg of gold, 1600 kg of silver, around Rs 20 crores in cash, many bags of diamonds (not valued).

The Sai trust is somewhat panicky about the possible legal ramifications now and have passed a “resolution” asking for the green rooms of Kulwant Hall, the VIP guest house Shanti Nivas inside PN, Sai Baba’s residence at Whitefield, Brindavan and Sai Shruti at Kodaikanal also to be searched. A suitcase containing Rs 27 lakhs donated by some “top cricketer” was found (Sachin Tendulkar, V V S Laxman?) and a whole range of other valuables and goods (see below)

A private source informs us that Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy is very angry at all the happenings around Sai Central Trust and is not keen on meeting the Sai Trustees and getting entangled in that controversy because they have created public anger in his state of Andhra Pradesh just as he is a few months into the Chief Minister’s office. His image as a politician who is “seen as putting things down with an iron hand” doesn’t bode well for the Sai Trust.
The following comment to the article in the Hindu puts the matter very succinctly:-

Yet more searches of Sai Baba’s ashram buildings

Posted by robertpriddy on July 3, 2011

Apparently the Sathya Sai Central Trust had “requested” the Andhra Pradesh government’s presence for yesterday’s inspection of Sai Baba’s palatial Yajur mandir. This they did despite their own statements just 48 hrs previously in a press conference that the idea that any more treasures in yajur mandir would be “fanciful”! The district official, Anita Ramachandran, has inspected and seized the second treasure and now she is  openly stating that “Sai Baba had hidden his donations in several places”. Next she wants to inspect the Poornachandra hall (Sai Baba’s former heavily fortified apartment), as well as other buildings. How she has come by such suspicions is not clear, so one can conjecture that some disgruntled insider opposed to the trust is tipping her off. Just maybe Satyajit?

Yet more treasure dug out of Sathya Sai Baba’s covert stores

As the Andhra Pradesh police predicted earlier, a new quite major stash of treasure has been found within one of Sathya Sai Baba’a private rooms in his palatial fortified residence. This is another blow to the already disappearing credibility of Sathya Sai Baba, who famously claimed to have no possessions nor to accept any gift from anybody, but also to the Sathya Sai Central Trust, which did not account for this donated wealth either. Yet more undiscovered wealth is quite widely expected to be discovered, only time will tell.

The Sathya Sai Trust mini-empire is crumbling

Posted by robertpriddy on June 26, 2011

Striking resignations tell their story: As reported yesterday, the Head of Sai Baba’s Super-speciality Hospital in Puttaparthi, Dr. Safaya and also several other doctors there have indicated their coming resignations. Today comes the further Indian Express report that Indulal Shah has “distanced himself from the Trust while Trust Secretary, former IAS officer K Chakravarthi, has indicated to other trustees about quitting.” To quit the sinking ship of the Sai Central Trust at this stage may help save their already shaky reputations. However, both have been involved in the huge irregularities and especially for their failure in duty of care. Both have gone along with the non-investigation and cover-up of the many sexual abuses of which Sathya Sai Baba was accused worldwide.

The Trust secretary Chackravathi has (according to our sources) offered to stay till alternate arrangements are made and he would brief the incoming secretary and officially hand over all records, before leaving. Chackravathi is referred to as a “retired IAS official”, when in fact he was forced to leave the service (Indian Administrative Service) due to embezzlement (I received this information in 1997 from an IAS Vigilance Officer, Mr. V. Ramnath). Chackravathi was, like others appointed by Sai Baba to run his affairs, was chosen to head the Rayalaseems water project (largely bungled due to kickbacks, contractor swindle, embezzlement and eventually had to be taken over by the Andhra Pradesh government).

See?Former International Chairman of the Sathya Sai Organization and its original founder, Indulal Shah, has a particularly bad record in having told the press after the 1993 police executions in Sai Baba’s bedroom that it was none of their business. Questioned by the press concerning the June 6, 1993 police killings – where the evidence overwhelmingly shows that Sai Baba stood by, having all the time and the absolute authority to act, but did nothing to stop the slayings – Indulal Shah is reported as saying, “the matter is purely internal and we do not wish to have any law enforcement agency investigating into it.” (The Hindu, June 10, 1993). In the event, the confusion spread wilfully by all involved helped slow and derail the process of investigation and the CBI work was hampered and eventually quashed at the governmental level. See review of the 1993 murders issue here

Already 10 years ago, a very succinct appraisal of how the Sathya Sai Central Trust works was posted by a former security officer at Prashanthi Nilayam, Mr. Hari Sampath. This can now be read with fresh eyes – see here.

More on the reasons for Sathya Sai Baba’s hoarding and proven mistrust of his own Sai Trust to come shortly in another blog.

Isaac Tigrett’s announcement of secrets Sai Baba told him – video added

Posted by robertpriddy on June 23, 2011

Since June when Tigrett made his pompous announcement about being Sai Baba’s ‘living will’, no one of any note in prominent Sai Baba circles – the Sai Trust etc. – has responded positively or even asked to hear his mind-boggled outpourings. No one has made an attempt on his life either, as he hinted could happen… as if he was of such importance to merit that. The international Sai organization has not taken the slightest bit of notice of his claims. The lifelong-misguided photographer Mr. Mistry seems to be his only public promoter.  How could they afford to endorse in any way a person who believed Sai Baba to be a sexual abuser and said on the BBC documentary for all the world to see that it made no difference to him.. not even if Sai Baba went out and murdered someone! Tigrett blathers about some amazing drawings of “metaphysical machines” Sai Baba supposedly gave him. The very term is a self-contradiction (an oxymoron – which term one is tempted to apply to the walking self-contradiction Tigrett himself). Could it be a machine for fetching vibuti, amrit and laddu out of the akasa? Or hot Indian dinners (as Sai Baba reportedly did!). Probably these airey-fairey constructs would “turn earth into sky and sky into earth”, as Sai Baba boasted he could do (but never demonstrated). If Tigrett ever presents these incredible blueprints to the world, we may expect something equally laughable, seeing how Tigrett lives on in a closed fantasy world of imagined ‘spirituality’… what on earth did Sai Baba manage to do to his mind in addition to blowing it up!

As of June 2014, nothing more has been heard of the Mystic Inn ashram project. Shortage of cash. But venal Tigrett has excelled himself with self-publicity of an even more weirdly doubtful kind in an attempt to regain prominence (and probably also donations) See  Tigrett’s ludicrous fantasies about Sai Baba’s ‘return in subtle body’

Full video with whole statement is at http://vimeo.com/24685452

The former donor of the first major hospital at Puttaparthi, former multi-millionaire Hard Rock Cafe owner, Isaac Tigrett, has been living near Sai Baba for several years. The transcribed text of the shorter on-line video is above and gives his announcement. It sounds rather incredible (as usual with him) and he has spoken on TV saying that Sai Baba left instructions with him as to how the Ashram must be run, and also said he spoke to Srinivasan, SV Giri and Chakravarthi three weeks ago. He stated “I am living will now…but don’t know whether I will be after this interview” and said he “will reveal all to the worldwide Sai Baba devotees on Guru Purnima 6 weeks later”. Not surprisingly, Central Trust spokesmen have rubbished Tigrett’s claim… it would most likely reduce their power or even remove some of them! (See Daily India left below).

Quite apart from his most injudicious statements on BBC TV’s ‘The Secret Swami’ condoning sexual abuse by Sathya Sai Baba and also murder,  Isaac Tigrett has in recent years announced some fantastic things. Such as his belief in the power of the crystal skull he placed on top of a pyramidal building in Memphis and which was removed by authorities. His warning at this move was very dire, reminding of the mad prophets of doom that flourish here and there, especially in the USA and are always confounded by actual events! The history of the original crystal “Skull of Doom” (as preserved at the Smithsonian Institute) has been thoroughly discredited by researchers as a manufactured fabrication… and this must consequently apply to all the many copies that were made, like the one Tigrett claims he received from Sai Baba.

Tigrett is a highly egocentric person who has started his own ashram-retreat in Coorg, promoting the mythology of the “Ascended Masters of the Seventh Ray” and similar fantasies. So perhaps a pinch of salt is in order regarding his latest attempt to take over the Sai Baba limelight. Devotees who want something to cling to will have to wait, wait, wait….

Sai Baba ashram’s Chief Security Officer arrested

Posted by robertpriddy on June 21, 2011

One-time Chief Justice P. N. Bhagwati

At long last it seems top poiliticians are getting cold feet about supporting the Sathya Sai Baba scams in view of the national mood and increasing critical press coverage in India. Developments are promising so far in that the police seem to be withstanding all the efforts to control their investigations. Further to the blog Sathya Sai Trust steps up damage limitation ploys and the aggro posted earlier today here, comes this report:-

“After another round of interrogation, the Andhra Pradesh police have arrested Pradhan, the Chief security officer of Sai Baba’s ashram. With this, the number of arrests  is now 4, all connected with the first cash haul.

Two others (in the Rs 5-10 crores haul from the bus), are being held in an undisclosed location by the AP police and I am informed interrogation is continuing, and possibly more arrests may follow. Legal notices have been issued to V. Srinivasan, chairman of WS Industries (and senior Sathya Sai Central Trust member) and to R.J. Rathnakar, under the Criminal procedure code. So far P.N. Bhagwati has evaded any legal notice and/or being named officially, although the cash was transported in his protocol car (one can suppose he is seeking immunity under some clause, having been a former Chief Justice of India (if only for a year), or pleading with his stronger Government contacts to save him as they have done before).

Private sources from high levels of AP police inform that, despite very strong pressure on them to dilute the case, senior politicians are not really pressing their efforts as this Sai Baba case has got national media attention, and no one wants to get his or her name in the news as being remotely associated with any Sai Baba related cover-up, especially in the era of scams being exposed in India every week.

An ashram source has informed us that two senior Trust members spent the day calling top politicians in Hyderabad and Delhi, but were frustrated that no government official or politician came on the phone line. A senior political leader from Hyderabad has informed an attorney in Hyderabad “Now we don’t want to get involved, all opposition parties are stepping up the heat and all Sai Baba related matters are now only bad news, and politically it may become adverse for us.”

Is this why the AP police are proceeding boldly? Sources have also informed us that the lower level employees like agents, drivers etc are seriously worried about any threat to them should they turn state witness and the police have assured them protection for giving all information.”

Sathya Sai Trust steps up damage limitation ploys and the aggro

Posted by robertpriddy on June 21, 2011

No one who knows India’s systemic corruption and – more particularly – the undercover and criminal manipulations at Sai Baba’s ashrams and their political supporters through the years – should have any illusions that the Sathya Sai Central Trust is above using bribery to cover up the wrongdoings in which they have long been known to be engaged under the direction of Sathya Sai Baba, their cheque-signing Chairman. It is apparent that they have stepped up their disinformation and mutual warfare now that the big cat is away. Nor can one rule out that goondas sent by Trustees can be a life threat to Sai Baba’s remaining family members, as the Times report makes clear enough (see scan on right). The Times’ article is so revealing that the remainder is reproduced here in case anyone should miss it (small blue text):-

Sources said several family members and relatives are livid at the way the inventory was carried out inside Yajur Mandir. Pointing their fingers at senior Trust member V Srinivasan, they alleged that he was responsible for barring their entry into Yajur Mandir. Shravan, brother of Chetana, demanded a fair probe into the cash seizure muddle and the alleged shifting of valuables and cash from Yajur Mandir. “Police should conduct a thorough probe in this regard as lakh of Baba’s devotees are hurt by the series of allegations involving the Trust,” he said.

The police maintained tight vigil at Yajur Mandir. A senior police official told TOI that “we are not allowing any outsider into the Yajur Mandir ever since the cash seizure issue came out.”  Meanwhile, the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust went on the defensive on Monday after the Anantapur district police asserted that they had evidence to prove that the cash seized from three persons on Saturday belonged to the Trust. The three arrested have been sent to judicial remand.

Comment: It should not be these hapless and helpless individuals suffering in police custody, but Rathnakar and other trustees who are strongly suspected of being involved and ‘masterminds’. But events until now show that the power-hungry Rathnakar will ride rough shod over any in his way – even his own relatives – and he will certainly be doing damage-limitation by trying to use influence – and probably bribes – to make the police change their tune. See scan on left confirming VVIP pressures on police.

Pooh-poohing the claims of Trust member R J Rathnakar that the seized cash of Rs 35 lakh belonged to 12 Baba devotees, Penukonda DSP Kolar Krishna asserted that the police had clinching proof to link the money trail to the Trust. “Till now, nobody has approached us to claim the unaccounted money,” he told TOI. Rathnakar on Sunday said the devotees would `hand over’ the necessary documents to take back the money from the court where it has been deposited after it was seized from a vehicle near Karnataka border on Saturday night.

Police on Monday produced senior Trust member V Srinivasan’s car driver Chandra Sekhar alias Sekhar, who was detained from a KSRTC bus on Sunday, and engineer Sohan Shetty before the additional judicial first class magistrate court in Hindupur. Magistrate Kamakar Reddy ordered judicial remand for the duo till June 23. Another suspect and site engineer of Baba’s Maha samadhi, Harish Nanda Shetty, was sent to judicial custody till June 27. The court, however, postponed hearing on the bail plea of the three suspects to Tuesday. Several employees of Prasanthi Nilayam and Rathnakar’s close aides were present at the court.

Sources said police would interrogate Pradhan, chief security officer of Yajur Mandir where Baba resided, Srinivasan’s personal assistant Venkatesh and a car driver of the Trust in connection with the cash seizures. “We do not rule out questioning Trust members like Srinivasan and Rathnakar also in connection with the case,” a senior police officer told TOI. He further said: “Though the money matters are dealt by the income tax department, we would take the case to its logical conclusion.”  Srinivasan __ a top industrialist from Chennai __ whose driver was caught by the police is silent on the matter.

In the meanwhile, an unsigned letter was also sent to the Hindupur court premises stating the money belonged to 12 devotees.  Sources said this was not the first time that vehicles from Puttaparthi were intercepted while carrying cash and gold. “When Sai Baba was alive, the higher-ups used to call the local police and instruct them not to `touch’ the Trust vehicles,” police sources averred.

“Even if we assume that Sai Baba had received gifts in the form of cash and gold, the huge amount found in Yajur Mandir tantamounts to the fact that the Trust affairs are not transparent,” remarked a senior police officer. Gold, silver, cash and artefacts valued at about Rs 35 crore were found from the mandir recently.

Sources informally let it be known that V. Srinivasan, Ratnakar and Bhagwati are the ones named by police to be questioned. It is quite open knowledge that P.N. Bhagwati used his official car given by the Government ( as Retd Chief justice) to transport illegal cash (the one that escaped on Friday) and further that the Enforcement Directorate is taking a close look at the Puttaparthi affairs, and may take over the case if it finds reasonable grounds of large-scale money laundering.
