Sai Baba Had to Study Singing Like A Regular Student

Posted by eileenweed on March 15, 2021

On the occasion of the birth centenary of the famous singing brothers BV Raman and BV Lakshmanan, there was an article with the following quote:

“Sathya Sai Baba learnt music from the brothers, which he openly acknowledged in many forums. The brothers stayed in Puttaparthi for about four years, during which period B.V. Raman composed as many as 37 songs on Sathya Sai Baba, which includes the famous aarti song, ‘Om Jai Jagadeesha Hare’.”

Do you think sai baba was omniscient? Then you are sadly mistaken! It is well known that he learnt magic tricks and slight-of-hand from his grandfather, and the family used to make a little money by performing magic and drama shows in the village. That is where he learned many stories from the scriptures too.

Now we learn that he took singing lessons from the two highly qualified brothers, probably with rich financial incentives for the brothers! They stayed four whole years in Puttaparthi and composed many songs for him – useful to use for decades as propaganda!

The twin brothers were born in a town called Bhavani in 1921. B.V. Lakshmanan passed away in 1996 and B.V. Raman passed away in 2006.

A teaching method of their own

Every student who trained under the twin brothers, B.V. Raman and B.V. Lakshmanan, cannot forget their gentle voices and ever-smiling faces along with the encouraging words, “With practice you can sing” (paada paada varum), that boosted the confidence of young learners.

Our beloved gurus had many disciples and their teaching method was very unique.

We still remember the day when we first attended Raman Sir’s class. We were in our teens and were straightaway taught the pallavis of one varnam and three other kritis. Sir then said, “This is all for the day”.

Since this kind of approach to teaching music was unheard of, we were worried and tense. Looking at the expressions on our faces, he understood what was going through our minds. He assured us that we will soon get accustomed to this method. He took away our notebooks saying that he would write the lyrics himself (both the brothers had beautiful handwriting) and give it to us in the next class.

While leaving the class, we tried to recollect the songs he had taught, at least a few lines. We felt nervous without the notebook in our hands and wondered how we would practise at home.

The next class, sir had written down the songs sans notation, but did not give the notebook to us to take a look at the lyrics.

With his encouragement and support, we learnt for 15 years without any notes, notations and recordings. Even today, every disciple of the brothers will be able to recall whatever they were taught without referring to any notebook.

In 1938, the brothers at the age of 17, began their formal music training under S. Srinivasa Rao. They also learnt from Veena Krishnamachariar and Kulitalai Krishnaswami Rao. Their lessons in Kathakali padas were under Venkatakrishna Bhagavatar, the elder brother of Palghat Rama Bhagavatar.

It so happened that once Tiger Varadachari had a chance to listen to the brothers sing, and suggested that they join the Sangeeta Bhooshanam course in the Music College at Annamalai University in Chidambaram, of which he was the principal. With support from Tiger Varadachari, who allowed the brothers to stay with him apart from offering them scholarship, the brothers completed the course in 1943. It was also the same year when Varadachari relinquished his post to join Kalakshetra in Chennai.

While in college, the brothers had the privilege to learn from Tiger Varadachari. They came to Chennai after completing their Sangeeta Bhooshanam course to work with Varadachari at Kalakshetra.

From 1943 to 1945, the brothers played an important role in assisting Rukmini Devi in many of her productions.

Unique approach
The brothers were unique in whatever they did. For instance, they began learning music only at the age of 17 and performing at the age of 35. They would make every performance stand out — a full fledged concert of Muthuswami Dikshitar’s rare compositions, a concert of just Thiruppugazh songs, a concert featuring post-Trinity compositions, or a Vinayaka Chaturthi concert with all songs, including the mangalam, in praise of Vinayaka.

Even their All India Radio concerts were theme based, like the one with all Gowla ragas or the one that featured rare compositions of Yogi Suddhananda Bharathi.

They set to tune all the 4,000 verses of the Divya Prabandham, around 27 kritis of Anayampatti Adi Seshaiyyar, and some Tarangams of Narayana Tirtha. They have composed varnams and thillanas.

Sathya Sai Baba learnt music from the brothers, which he openly acknowledged in many forums. The brothers stayed in Puttaparthi for about four years, during which period B.V. Raman composed as many as 37 songs on Sathya Sai Baba, which includes the famous aarti song, ‘Om Jai Jagadeesha Hare’.

For 40 years they conducted the aradhana of Sadashiva Brahmendral at Manamadurai with sincerity and commitment.

They believed in simple living while their music was a reflection of their devotion to the art and their spirituality. As much as their music, it was the personal qualities of the brothers that endeared them to the public as well as to their peers. They were generous in their appreciation of their accompanists, contemporaries and younger artistes.

At a special event organised for his centenary at Chennai’s Ragasudha Hall, the vidwans Anayampatti Ganesan and N. V. Subramanian, who were closely associated with the brothers, performed a tribute concert.

Master Plan for Puttaparthi? UPDATED!

Posted by robertpriddy on June 11, 2020

The proposition for a major development of Puttaparthi into an international tourist destination, first reported years ago and revisited many times (not least of which was in September 2019), has again been revised in a Hans India article dated 2 June 2020.

Sathya Sai Baba has been dead and buried for nine (9) years now. Puttaparthi has hardly any visitors, as the evidence of wrongdoing and the fact that the baba constantly sexually abused young boys for many decades, has spread far and wide.

Puttaparthi is now just a typical small town with normal families going about their normal lives. How will they attract tens of thousands of spiritual-minded tourists to pay for the “Yoga Wellness Centre” and the “Food Park”? Wait and watch my friends – wait and watch!

This massive project promises to be yet another “White Elephant” of waste, just like the Sathya Sai Airport, vacant year round, is now.

Master plan prepared for development of Puttaparthi: MLA D Sridhar Reddy

Hans News Service
2 Jun 2020 12:48 AM IST

Puttaparthi (Anantapur) : MLA D Sridhar Reddy stated that he will strive to develop Puttaparthi as an international tourist destination. Already the spiritual town has a brand image due to the visit of several people from abroad when Bhagawan Sathya Sai Baba was alive.

The town has many guest houses and private resorts built by foreign devotees of the Baba and it will be developed on the lines of Mantralaya, he said.

Sathya Sai National Park, Underground drainage and underground power cables, a ring road, R&B circuit guest house, Food Park and Yoga Wellness Centre will be part of Rs 1,000 crore development project, he added.

Sridhar Reddy said to The Hans India that a master plan had been drafted prior to covid 19 lockdown.

Soon the issue will be taken to the notice of Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.

APIIC will provide 100 acres of land for Food Park, and Roads and Buildings department will be investing Rs.350 crore on the 31.5 km ring road development covering Manillakunta Cross, Kothacheruvu, Puttaparthi and Bukkapatnam mandals. Already 60 acres had been identified for the Yoga Wellness Centre, he further said.

MLA Sridhar asked officials to take steps for planting trees on the proposed ring road connecting Puttaparthi-Bukkapatnam-Kothacheruvu. A fountain at the Chitravati dam and also a giant statue of Baba for attracting tourists are also planned by the MLA.

Master Plan for Puttaparthi?

Posted by robertpriddy on October 7, 2019

A report in late September 2019 stated that Puttaparthi will be developed into an “International Tourist Spiritual destination”, a 1,000 crore project. This will apparently include a 100 acre land for a Food Park and 60 acres for a Yoga Wellness Center.

It is quite amusing to hear of the large wasteful investments in hope of a internationally recognised spiritual destination… the dwindling attraction of a dead and gone charlatan God. I wonder what the “R & B Circuit Guest House’” will be. Part of a showbiz circuit for Rhythm and Blues artists and their fans? Ha, ha!

Then, the 100 acre ‘Food Park’ intrigued me… will they be selling sought-after culinary delicacies as Parthi-pizza, coconut and/or vegetable rolls, PN canteen food? That will bring in the ’spiritual visitors’ in their hordes, no doubt.

A full sixty acres of Yoga wellness rather suggests the estimated ill health and degeneration of devotees. What will doubtless be the destruction of the already naturally beautiful Chitravati river bed and surroundings is a mindless shame.

Why can’t people leave good alone? I can’t imagine many people making a pilgrimage to see it all!

Master Plan for Puttaparthi development proposed in Anantapur
Hans News Service
30 Sep 2019 2:39 AM IST

Anantapur: District Collector S Sathyanarayana stated that Puttaparthi, the abode of late Sathya Sai Baba, will be developed as an International Tourist Spiritual destination. A detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared soon and the state government will send it to the central government for financing the project, he said.

The Collector convened a meeting in this regard and Puttaparthi MLA D Sridhar presided over it. The town will be developed on the lines of Icon City in Mantralaya. Sathya Sai National Park, Underground drainage and under-ground power cables, a Ring road, R&B circuit guest house, Food Park and Yoga Wellness Centre development will be part of the Rs 1,000 crore project, the Collector said.

APIIC will provide 100 acres of land for Food Park and already some parties have evinced interest in investing on Food Park. Roads and Buildings department will be investing Rs.350 crores on the 31.5 km Ring road development covering Manillakunta Cross, Kothacheruvu, Puttaparthi and Bukkapatnam mandals.

Already 60 acres have been identified for the Yoga Wellness Centre. Chitravati river-bed beautification will also be part of the Greater Puttaparthi Development. A 33 KV sub-station is also proposed in the Puttaparthi town, he added.

Sai Baba 86th birthday anniversary a virtual washout

Posted by robertpriddy on November 26, 2011

Indian news media are remarkably silent about the 86th birthday anniversary celebrations of Sathya Sai Baba on 23rd November. None of the major newspapers have coverage of the event, though the Hindu has a brief article. Even the official International Sathya Sai Organization website ( was not updated after 21 November this year, and has no mention whatever of the event! That is surely a very telling sign of the state of affairs, if ever there was one. Search as one may, the Indian news outlets on-line have nothing substantial whatever to offer. That the 86th celebrations were very far from being anything remotely like the best days of the past is evidenced by the content of the main Sai Baba propaganda websites – such as, where there are videos but where one sees no sign of real crowds other than all those involved in Sai Baba schools, colleges and other institutions dependent on the Central Trust. The videos show a mostly po-faced or scowling Sai Baba endlessly swinging on his joola from the distant past… interspersed with the empty joola swinging this time, accompanied by the musical group at the celebrations. carelessly labeled its page absurdly (as is their style) as “Sri Sathya Sai Baba Birthday celebrations in prashanthi Nilayam puttaparthi India and all over the universe”

The propaganda machine now apparently under the overseership of Ratnakara, the nephew of SB who won the battle to be the main holder of the Sai Trust purse strings, is continuing its disinformation. As ‘The Hindu’ remarks (see below) “scores of devotees” thronged the 86th celebrations, while Ratnakara mendaciously expands this to 75 thousand! One can see (image here) the main celebration was held in the Kulwant mandir, which holds less than 10,000 when jam-packed! The Hindu also wrote:  “The Tamil Nadu Governor, Konijeti Rosiah, who was the guest of honour on the occasion, said that Puttaparthi was a holy place as it was proved beyond doubt with the very presence of millions of devotees across the globe.”  One can but laugh at that kind of imaginary proof, especially today when Sai Baba lost credibility even with so many Indians when he died prematurely of such causes and was found to have been a private miser and hoarder!  “The Hindu remarks that he “sought to allay fears of decline in patronage” – exactly, this is the main agenda now, a vain agenda! His vanity depends on the position he now has whereby he is largely responsible for how well the ship sails… which also explains his great reticence in publishing details of the donations received – the obvious great drop in these from abroad – at the very least – would be damaging to him too. His policy is typical of the way the Sathya Sai authorities and Organization have always operated… faked multiplication of numbers of visitors, devotees, groups, centers in every instance. No independent head count has ever been made to check a single one of these claims. For a Sai group to become an official ‘centre’ it only has to have nine members! Some centres only have 9 members spread out over a large geographical area, even a whole nation! This indicates adequately what lies behind the boast that the organization has centres galore in hundreds of countries!

The great deceiver's deluded puppet, Dr. Michael Goldstein

The Sathya Sai Organization (which is quite separate from the Central Trust with its money bags) is truly negligible compared to other such international bodies in terms of the volume of its charitable, voluntary works, except possible in parts of India. Once the number 60 million followers was established in some media, the lie has persisted – even though some media have reduced it to 30 million (with not a figment of proof one way or the other). Only because of the laxity of modern, ever-more-impoverished newspaper journalism and their reliance on press releases did the misinformation machine have such success in deceiving world media about the true numbers involved. The Organization used to report such vastly exaggerated figures as “three million visitors” to the 70th birthday (actually not more than 500,000). Now it is down to 75,000… which is itself wholly unbelievable. Not a single remotely famous or more consequential person was present this time either.

One of our most incisive and well-informed commentators writes:-

Yes, on TV9, the Kannada State broadcasting station, you see more police than devotees in the streets of Puttaparthi. Nonetheless, the 86th birthday celebrations of His Late Greatness are channeled larger than life by His only active voice, Radiosai, and portrayed in all their lavishness and money spending splendour through accompanying videos. In the afternoon of November 20, infamous husher-up-of secrets and head of the international SSB Organisation, Dr. Michael Goldstein, resurfaced, as he held a speech in the Sai Kulwant Hall. One of his topics? The TRUTH, no less…

Sai Baba claims embarrass officials – who cover them up

Posted by robertpriddy on September 29, 2009

The Sathya Sai Baba official website [www.sathyasaiorg] has recently been weeded of some of the main propaganda that it formerly contained. Among what were long considered the very most important items were four ‘key’ discourses given by Sai Baba where he makes his mega-claims about himself. For decades these have been seen by his officials and followers as the avatar’s most impelling announcements.

However, the Sai authorities have evidently gradually realised that the sheer megalomania of those claims are not acceptable to the world public, for the exceed what any reasonable non-indoctrinated person can believe. Therefore they have been brushed under the carpet, though all followers doubtless still believe in them, otherwise they would have to deny the truth of his entire avataric mission. Here is a facsimile of the main body of the official web page – removed from (but still archived here)

Discourses by

Sathya Sai Baba

International Sai Organization
Four important discourses by Sri Sathya Sai Baba:
Shiva Shakthi
(6 July 1963). Swami heals himself from an 8-day stroke and announces his third incarnation as Prema Sai eight years after he leaves this body.

The revelation (17 May 1968). The last part of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s discourse at the “World Conference of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organizations” in Bombay, 17 May 1968. Sai Baba states plainly and directly that he has come as an incarnation of God to restore righteousness (dharma).

Forty-Third birthday discourse (23 November 1968). Swami speaks about His being the Avatar and proclaims his mission on earth: the establishment of righteousness.

Who is Sai? (9 June 1974). Sai Baba talks about God, the Religion of Love, and His Avatar-hood. He explains why he materializes rings, etc., and gives them to people, and he explains what “Sai Baba” means.

Discourses are copyrighted by the Sri Sathya Sai Books & Publications Trust.,

It may well be said that the work of those determined that the full facts about Sathya Sai Baba – not just the positive ones – should be known [and including the massive and absurd claims he has made] is the cause of the great caution and increased censorship and cover-up by all officials of his various institutions!

Sathya Sai Baba’s gross lies in public – with photo

Posted by robertpriddy on July 19, 2009

On of his most despicable lies was in the ‘unforgiving Christmas discourse’ in 2000 (a time to celebrate the greatest teacher of forgiveness in history!!) where he accused many identifiable persons saying,

“Why are they doing this propaganda? Even this bad propaganda is for money. All these bad thoughts are for money only. Even these bad thoughts are for money only… Switzerland, America, Japan, Germany, China, Russia – our children have entered in all directions. Some foreigners are trying to bribe them. They are saying, “See, foolish ones! I will give this much money. I will give so many dollars. I will give this many pounds. You write and give some stories against Sathya Sai Baba.”

Of course, neither Sai Baba nor anyone else has been able to present a single shred of evidence to support this cheap and transparent lie. In lying thus, why did Sai Baba not follow his own advice to speak pleasantly and not unpalatably? The answer is evident, the allegations reached such proportions that they were causing many members of his organization to leave. He was under great pressure and therefore tried to hit back, knowing that those faithful to him would believe his every word. This was damage limitation at all costs. The truth is always the first casualty where Sai Baba and his people are concerned.

Allegedly 'materialised' diamond ring from Sathya Sai Baba for prospective donor, Robert Priddy, 24/12/1986

Allegedly 'materialised' diamond ring from Sathya Sai Baba for prospective donor, Robert Priddy, 24/12/1986

Sai Baba is himself taking money under false pretenses: will presumably continue to lie ‘until blue in the face’, and still claim that he is giving away ‘diamonds’ when they are not. He will never admit the truth about them, which I know with 100% certainty in the case of an alleged large ‘green diamond’ he gave me (expecting a fat donation I had already mentioned). He knows that giving these trinkets or other apparent divine favours will cause most of the rich recipients to donate large sums of money, devote much work and time to his advancement. This is a very advanced form of scam.

It is interesting to observe how so many credulous persons try to sustain their complete faith in him now that so many indubitable facts have come to light. Lack of self-confidence and fear of consequences are major factors, as well as loss of status, friends and realisation of having been thoroughly duped and having wasted major efforts and money on this deceiver. But much in which they had faith is most likely as crippled in their minds as Sai Baba is himself, and many are wracked within by private sufferings that have to be denied on his ‘divinely instructive example’. But Sai Baba has said that the truth protects those who face it!

Sathya Sai Baba and India in-depth study

Barry Pittard articles on India and Sathya Sai Baba

Some of Barry Pittard’s articles at his blogsite – – are as: see below. For three decades, he has been well-known for his great love of India, where he lived for several years, often engaged in service to the very poor, and also teaching at the Sathya Sai college outside Bangalore. The issues he raises about India’s profound levels of corruption and superstition are issues that thinking Indians themselves have great concern about. Critical comment on India’s problems can equate to a genuine care for that country to see far better days. Countless of India’s greatest thinkers and reformers have been among those who have criticised many things within Indian society, such as superstition that penetrates most sections, the blind and fervent worship whether of gurus, film stars, cricketers, etc., the appalling record in human rights, casteism, endemic corruption, attitudes towards women, and so forth.

Sai Baba postpones moon buggy ride

Google News Alert for: Sathya Sai Baba
Thousands disappointed as Sai Baba’s ‘moon miracle’ fails
Waning popularity! This was no doubt another in a long, long line of calculated ‘rumours’ for the grinding minds of devotees who can’t find out what’s going on and are dead keen to know anything… But why Sathya Sai Baba went to the airport is truly a mystery in itself, for he knew he could never appear on the moon. How can this be explained? There are many possible interpretations (for the blindfolded believer to choose between)…

1) He was on the moon all right but the clouds were necessary to hide his blinding brilliance. But perhaps the crowds misunderstood him and expected a great mahima miracle… instead of the vague shape of the Sai afro frizz which can just about be visualised from the moon’s darker area. His afro-frizz can vaguely be seen if one is very willing in the darker parts of the moon – but that is always there on a fullish moon. The Sai official didn’t realise that this was what Sai Baba meant?

3) Or, no less likely, he was there – on the Dark Side of the Moon, together with Pink Floyd and Michael Jackson in Never-never land? (because the moon was not full but showed mostly only a dark face). Slight problem with these explanations? He did not disappear when sitting watching in the wheelchair! Never fear, everyone knows he can easily bi-locate himself… yep, reckon he must be there for he could never tell a lie?

Andhra Café reports that the coming miracle was announced in advance by Sai Baba’s naive servitor, Anil Kumar, and the ensuing scenes were chaotic with Puttaparthi villagers and devotees in thousands chanting Sai Baba’s name and blocking the airport.

TV broadcasts were made and, when the allegedly omnipotent and all-knowing Sai Baba did NOT appear on the moon (due to unpredictable weather). Instead he was trapped for about one hour in his car amid the uncontrollable crowds, which also caused closure of the airport. The Vishvarupa Darshanam ceremony has to be “postponed” because, according to Sathya Sai Trust officials, of “non-cooperation of devotees and the cloudy weather”.

A postponement means that this miraculous darshan WILL be resumed at some later date! Let’s wait and see… perhaps Sathya Sai Baba will also soon lift a range of mountains, as he has also once announced and published, among many other utterly incredible fantasies?

Read more Sai Baba man in the moon mythology here.

See how some claim to have seen Sai Baba on the moon anyhow!
