BBC radio 4 interview transcript – Sai sex abuse

Posted by robertpriddy on January 31, 2010

To those who are still Sathya Sai Baba devotees in denial of the facts I put the question: why would so many young men speak out in the way exemplified below in the BBC Radio 4 interview transcript by one such testifier, Jed Geyerhahn of Massachusetts? The explanation Sathya Sai organization gives officially is that they are “disgruntled”, for because they did not get what they came for, or failed to get enough attention from God Incarnate. That is an absurdity… they are disgusted rather than disgruntled. They got what the did not want, sexual molestation, according to their detailed and credible accounts. That so many young men had the courage and public duty to stand forth fearlessly is a testimony to them. So it is high time for followers and defenders of Sai Baba to show a minimum of honesty in evaluating the testimonies and other still mounting evidence. Vir Sanghvi of the Hindustan Times had the courage to face down the powerful, Government-protected Sathya Sai Baba, pointing out that the evidence is overwhelming. Over 20 young men have spoken out in signed testimonies about being sexually abused by Sathya Sai Baba, and many more have contacted those of us they can trust privately with their information so as to let us be in no doubt whatever of the truth.

Sai Baba, holy guru whose wisdom is profound. Or a sexual predator?

Transcript from BBC Radio 4 – Sunday 19th November 2000 – 7:30am

This is Sunday on BBC Radio 4; the time is now just after 7.33 am …

“He then abused my stepson, so I then knew that these stories I’d been told by the students were true. The students turned to me, and said ‘Please sir, will you go back to England and help us?’

(Five minutes of other stories…)

We’ll return now to a story we reported on two weeks ago about serious allegations of sexual abuse made against Sai Baba, the popular leader of a religious organisation in India, who claims to have up to 50 million followers around the world. A campaign waged on the Internet by disillusioned former devotees is seeking to warn families of the dangers they face when visiting the Sai Baba Organisation. The allegations are hotly disputed.

Stephen Perry investigates, in this week’s special report:

Sai Baba is one of the most revered gurus in India and has a following that is estimated to be between 10 and 50 million. Most of the devotees are from India, but many travel from the United Kingdom, United States and the rest of the world, in the hope of being granted an interview with the man who claims he is the reincarnation of a revered saint, Shirdi Sai Baba who died in 1918.

He is himself now worshipped as a god, an Avatar. </span

“I know that Baba is my saviour. I know that Baba is within me. I know that Baba will direct me. I know that Baba will protect me. I love you father. I need you Father Sai Baba.”

“I believed that he was the Avatar, and I believed also specifically that he’d called me to be close to him and to be a follower of his, so I felt that there were divine forces at work in bringing me to him, and in giving me a new direction in my life.”

Jed Geyerhan from Massachusetts in the United States was close to his 16th birthday when he first met Sai Baba a few years ago. Jed had travelled with his aunt to the ashram in Puttaparthi in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.

In 1997 Mick Brown, the Daily Telegraph journalist, joined the 10,000 or so who regularly gathered at the small town that been formed to accommodate devotees at the Sai Baba Centre. He was there to conduct research for his book ‘The Spiritual Tourist.’ He became aware of the wide embrace of the leaders’ influence.

“Sai Baba is without question, the most important and the most significant religious figure in India. He’s also a very significant political figure in India, and his followers have included previous Prime Ministers and the present Prime Minister. Among the board of trustees of his ashram are senior politicians, former politicians, members of the judiciary, senior members of the armed forces… so on and so forth. So he is a very estimable figure in Indian public life, and a very powerful figure actually in the Hindu nationalist movement in India.”

David Bailey, a concert pianist from North Wales…

(David’s music plays behind David as he speaks for a few seconds).

“When I got to India to see him, there was a fantastic moment in my life, because I believed that I was in the presence of a very great being. He was claiming to be God on earth… At that moment when I saw him… There was a huge welling up of an energy… I can only say, of love. It was a moment that made me think – am I here on earth at the same time as another figure like Jesus? “

David Bailey found favour with Sai Baba and was asked to play at music festivals in India and around the world on his behalf. He says he was granted over a hundred private interviews with the guru. Most devotees are lucky to have one such opportunity. But he claims when young students started coming up to him with tales of how they had been sexually abused, he became troubled.

“He then abused my stepson, so I then knew that the stories I’d been told were true. The students turned to me, and said “Please sir, will you go back to England and help us?”

This he did, and set up a website on the Internet, and he began to publish testimonies by those who alleged they’d been molested by Sai Baba.

What has emerged is a pattern of behaviour by the guru, leading on to sexual abuse of devotees. On his first visit to the ashram, Jed Geyerhan had several interviews with Sai Baba in the company of his aunt. At the third, he was invited into a private room, alone.

“He actually grabbed my groin direct through my clothes and in that interview he asked me to take my pants down and he materialised this grey ash called vibhuti and rubbed the vibhuti on the side of my groin.”

Two years later he went back and was granted a further interview.

“But looking for some sort of explanation as to what these sexual experiences were. He asked me what I wanted and I said “I want your love” and he took it completely wrong and sort of just peculiarly advanced his body towards me and said “you know I’m all yours, take me.” ah .. you know “take me” but not .. ah .. sort of in any sort of spiritual way but looking at me in a flirtatious way.”

With Jed it went no further than that, but another American family who wish to remain anonymous, claimed Sai Baba had oral sex with their son and attempted to rape him. The boy’s father was at the time an important official within the organisation in the United States. He himself, at the age of 18 had had similar experiences to those of Jed Geyerhan.

“What happened many years later to my son, proved to me that really what had happened to me was just the initial part of what Sai Baba does, and that it seems that that’s the way he starts out with boys.

When we began questioning our son we found out that in fact Baba had been forcing him to engage in more intimate sexual behaviour than we had ever known about and when our son would refuse, Baba would get angry, and he would say “oh, you don’t like me and so I’m never talking to you and your family again.” and her son would say “oh please Baba don’t – I .. I do love you, but not like that.”

We contacted the Sai Baba Organisation in India but a senior official there made it clear they were not willing to talk to the BBC.

Ashok Bagwani, a trustee of the UK organisation vigorously denies there is any substance to the allegations, and so has the anointing of the genitals of young men by Sai Baba was out of the question.

“It is not acceptable in any form of language and this sort of behaviour does not agree with spirituality. You know, Sai Baba is a spiritual leader and I can tell you categorically this sort of thing doesn’t happen there. These are disgruntled people. They may have been previously Sai Baba devotees, but they are disgruntled, with an axe to grind and I welcome anyone to contact me if they’ve got a serious allegation, and errr … We will talk to them.”

Steen Piculell, the Sai Baba organisation co-ordinator in the Russian speaking countries, speaking from Copenhagen in a personal capacity, says the allegations are sheer madness. But he does believe the stroking of the male genitals can be acceptable in India.

“Gurus have always, as part of their job, put some oil on the er .. upper.. er … Part of their … Right hand and g .. … and gone down in the chakra be .. be .. behind the testicles to er .. er .. . adjust the .. chakra there. This is a normal thing. And this I suppose Baba has also done because this is part of his job. That’s all.”

and Steen Piculell dismisses those who are organising the campaign against Baba as representing no more than a divine test, sent by God.

“Of course, they’re playing the role of Judas or the ‘doubtful Thomas.’ I mean that they are picked to play this role, from a .. a .. d…divine play. The time of Jesus, with the doubt for Thomas, with the Judas, is repeating itself now, in this time. And they’re doing a perfect… job, and Baba knows only the best ones to pick out for that ..

To date, no one making the allegations against Sai Baba has attempted to prosecute him. Mick Brown thinks the guru is in some measure invulnerable in his own country.

“I think there is a degree to which Sai Baba is a law unto himself, if you like. I think it’s probably very hard for anyone to make these allegations in India, because he is a figure of… held in such high esteem.”

With legal action unlikely, Jed Geyerhan and the many others who made the allegations of indecent assault and abuse of trust, are limiting themselves to warning others against following a path.

“My motive at this point is just sort of continue down that road trying to get as many people to know about it as possible, and realise that there’s something terribly wrong here.”

Jed Geyerhahn ending that report by Stephen Perry. BBC radio 4

Jed Geyerhahn also stated on the Danish documentary film ‘Seduced’ -viewable here (also title ‘Seduced by Sai Baba’):-

(JED GEYERHAHN) In 1989 when I was 15 years old I went to India for three weeks. And on that trip I had four interviews. And in the third interview he actually asked me to untie my pants. And he forcibly pulled my pants down and with his bare hand grabbed my groin and rubbed some oil on the side of my scrotum. And I went again on the following year, and on that trip when I was 16 years old, Sai Baba called me again for a private interview. At that point I was even actually more uncomfortable because it seemed like this had already taken place, there is no reason why it needed to take place again. But he asked me to take my pants down. I did and he went on and produced an oily substance and rubbed it on the side of my scrotum.

226 00:36:34:10 00:36:38:15 According to Jed Geyerhahn, he is far from being the only one.

(JED GEYERHAHN) I have talked with students at Sai Baba’s school and they have had sexual relationships with Sai Baba. And it’s really common knowledge that several students stay with Sai Baba all night on an ongoing basis. And of course nobody talks about what takes place with these students with Sai Baba, but from the students I’ve talked to (it’s) clear that there are sexual relationships taking place. And in fact one student I talked to directly was a person that was staying with Sai Baba. And from the conversation it was clear that it was very difficult for him to come forward with this information, because he’d be rejected by his family and by his culture and by his people, unlike American students who have the support of their culture and society and family. They come forward and talk about the fact that they have been mistreated by Sai Baba.

Sathya Sai Baba’s promises part four

Posted by robertpriddy on October 23, 2009

In many public discourses promises Sathya Sai Baba talks about his extremely caring support for his devotees. People who are drawn to him – often because of personal problems of all kinds, including searching for the meaning of life and protection from its vagaries and sufferings – long to believe that these ‘divine assurances’ are always fulfilled. Alas, they seldom are! When something seems to result from a prayer, it will no doubt just as well be the result of natural processes and events. When prayers are NOT fulfilled, which is certainly so int the overwhelming majority of instances, devotees full of faith overlook this or fall back on the large set of stock ‘explanations’ why this is so!  Even the voluminous amateurish ‘literature’ praising Sai Baba and relating the most incredible stories (sic) contain occasional reference to big letdowns of this kind. Yet it is all too obvious that many instances likely to awaken suspicions or doubts are not talked about in these books, which are always strongly self-censored. When one talks freely to people at the ashrams or in Sai Baba centres and groups around the world, one meets and hears of all the failures, uncured visitors, disappointed sufferers. Sathya Sai Baba’s close attendant and editor for 20 years,  V.K. Narasimhan, startled and shocked me once by saying that he had never seen a single genuine cure by Sathya Sai Baba in all the years he had been living close to him! Narasimhan himself was told his eye was cured with vibuthi ‘made’ on the spot for him, but within two days he has lost it completely!

Sathya Sai Baba and ‘miracle cures’: The hagiographies about Sathya Sai Baba’s ‘miraculous’ cures are many, where the quality and accuracy of the writing is under all criticism in most cases. Due to the nature of his alleged ‘methods’, no scientific control study has ever been made of any of the claims of miraculous healing by him, neither spontaneously nor in answer to prayers. This is not to say that he, like thousands of others of reported ‘healers’, cannot have been involved in a healing process through faith, if only as a catalytic agent on whom one projects prayer, faith and hope. Meanwhile there are a any number of reports by those who have sacrificed and prayed to Sathya Sai Baba constantly for themselves or for another, but all of whom have only got worse! Of course, the handy theory of past bad karma is trundled out to explain away the possibility of a cure in this or that persons’ instance. All evidence that Sathya Sai Baba does not heal, does not keep his word, or is not able to heal people of himself has to be refuted by the ‘true believer’, whose agenda is totally to block out all experience that may lead to another explanation or in any way be interpreted to reduce their hard-held belief that Sathya Sai Baba is a divine healer and God himself. Even devotees who feel the need to keep up a front despite themselves not having been healed according to Sathya Sai Baba’s promise will convince themselves that they have been helped… and even lie about this, such as Mrs. Phyllis Krystal did about the headaches she claimed Sai Baba cured her of (after being asked point blank in public at the 1990 Sai Baba conference in Hamburg). However, she was still suffering from them for years afterwards, as Lucas Ralli (with whom she stayed when in London) informed me most definitively and to my great surprise. (See here)

I have shown from his own discourses how Sathya Sai Baba teaches many mere superstitions, falsehoods or speculatively imaginative half-truths. Further, his abysmal level of his ignorance of basic physics, astronomy, and most non-Hindu religion and history has been demonstrated to the full on exposé websites. Nonetheless, he has said intelligent things (and nowadays at least such is an exception rather than a rule). He may indeed be right in claiming that ‘healing’ comes only from within, and this is caused by the faith (that healing will occur) by the person who gets cured (Conversations with Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba – by Dr. John Hislop. page 121, later edition). But he says this of absolutely all cures. However, who can deny that medicine is the decisive factor in the vastest number of known cures of diseases, illnesses, accidents and so forth. This he has to admits awkwardly somehow in that he allowed the building of two hospitals with major funds contributed by devotees. He has also said that a doctor’s kind approach has the greatest healing effect (Sathya Sai Speaks Vol. 26, p 47), which – if correct – shows that healing is not only  ‘from within’. Nor ‘from God’, of course. In his confused accounts, Sai Baba fails to mention the huge importance of genetic factors in illness and healing… and of the natural regenerative powers of all living creatures (who know or worship no God) and also the human psycho-physical entity. One can say that healing comes from within in a quite different sense to religious speculations about the existence of a supposed divine soul!

Is vibuthi a medicine, can it heal? All the talk about the healing power of ‘Sai Baba vibuthi’ and other substances he hands out may cause belief in healing, and this may help… but the actual curative/medicinal properties are zero, according to analyses of this vibuthi made in laboratories here and there. The apparent cure due to this substance (actually the ash from burning such materials as cow dung, rice husks or sandalwood etc.) is often called the ‘placebo effect’ in medical research. Another term used is ‘spontaneous regeneration’, which refers to unknown aspects of the body’s self-regenerative powers. The ‘placebo effect’ is obviously a psychic phenomenon and remains largely (but not entirely) unexplained…. but it is very common. This is almost indubitably the key element in so-called ‘faith’ healings.

One will find no record of the overwhelming number of cases where vibuti is applied but no cure whatever arises. I have documented on well-known instance (see ref. to widely-known fact among residents and VIPs: V.K. Narasimhan’s loss of an eye after application fo vibuti by Sai Baba himself!). I witnessed the dying days of a Norwegian devotee – Mrs. Fotland – to whom I had brought a handful of packets of vibuthi given me especially for her at an interview by Sai Baba. Further, as leader of the Sathya Sai Centre in Oslo, I have seen vibuti applied countless times without the desired result, also in the ashrams and elsewhere.

Prashanti Nilayam vibuthi manufactured in Palani factory: It is known that tons of vibuti are ordered by Prashanthi Nilayam from Palani (near the foot of the Kodai mountain in Tamil Nadu) where ‘vibuty’ is manufactired in quantity. I was friends with a former Seva Dal servitor, Krishna Panjwani of Bombay –  a very sweet elderly gentleman – who annually travelled around and bought supplies for the Prashanthi Nilayam shop he supervised – in the heat of summer when Sai Baba was away on holiday in Kodai. He used to go to Palani to get vibuti, and an invoice published by Basava Premanand showed the details of one such purchase of a huge amount. See here:-

Sathya Sai Baba blessed criminal Italian Prime Minister, Bettino Craxi

Posted by robertpriddy on January 28, 2009

Sathya Sai Baba has blessed numerous convicted or indicted criminals, including Mr. Bettino Crax, and Mr. Guilio Andreotti – both Italian Prime Ministers, Dictator Idi Amin of Uganda, who he personally visited in Kampala, he was strongly supportive of the his devotee, Indian Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, who “fled to his feet” after acquittal on corruption charges (most probably though Sathya Sai Baba’s influence over his devotees such as Supreme Court judges and PM at the time, A.B. Vajpayee). Sai Baba has also visited and blessed a known criminal liquor kind, Mr. Reddy of Madras, among numerous other similar shady persons in India.

bcraxi1 Bettino Craxi visited Sathya Sai Baba in Puttaparthi in late 1986 while he was Italy’s Prime Minister.  The visit of the Craxi family and the blessings the Italian Prime Minister received fro Sathya Sai Baba were reported in his official journal Sanathana Sarathi (p. 273 November 1986). Craxi arrived with his wife and a small entourage and heavily armed security guards in a helicopter, which landed in the ashram grounds. The ladies were wearing very short skirts, stiletto heels and heavy lipstick make-up, which caused alarm among the Sai officials and servitors who were involved (such dress is regarded in an extremely derogatory light among Sai Baba followers). All ashram visitors and residents were excluded from the area while the visit took place. Sathya Sai Baba expressed dislike of the weapons carried, saying it was unnecessary, and when they laid them down, he gave vibuti (‘holy ash’) to the security men, who were somewhat perplexed by it.
In the interview Bettino Craxi asked Sai Baba about what the future held for him and was reportedly told that there were persons close to him one whom he could not rely. (What a wise – but entirely obvious- comment to an Italian politician in the thick of a corrupt system!). In 1993, B. Craxi was charged with murder of a journalist and major corruption and he resigned as Socialist party leader. Bettino Craxi died as a criminal in exile in Tunis, fleeing a conviction in Italy of about 18 years in prison plus multi-million dollar fines.

Wikipedia’s article on Craxi’s massive corruption and crime states: “A huge crowd assembled in front of the building and when Craxi finally went out, he was met with thousands of coins tossed at him. The outraged people intoned: “Bettino! Do you want even these?!”. This episode is remembered with agony, anger and scandal within the Italian political class, and with pride and long-lost joy by a majority of the common citizens.”
Bettino Craxi’s brother, Mr. Antonio Craxi, was the top leader of the Sathya Sai Organization in Europe (and Italy) for a number of years until he was replaced in the late 1980s by Pietro Marena of Divignano, near Milan. VKN expressed shock at the most hateful and vicious personal slanders he had ever heard (he told me)  by A. Craxi towards Pietro Marena and others (see scans of my notes recorded at the time) It was said to me by persons who knew the Craxi family well that Antonio had made a large donation to Sathya Sai Baba of money gained through the Mafia, which he wanted to offload to be forgiven his sins.

Mr. Antonio Craxi wore a ring supposed to be a ‘green diamond’ given by Sathya Sai Baba His wife has expressed her belief that Sai Baba rings with green stones are “power rings”. (This is very similar to ‘Lord of the Rings’ stuff taken literally). Many leading persons in India and the Organization were given what they were told by Sai Baba are green and white “diamond” rings, green and white in colour. Well, he gave me one (no doubt because I had promised what for me was a major donation) at Christmas 1986. I wore it for many years, but there was no power involved, though I suppose one could have used it to gain undue influence or ‘power’ over devotees who had no similar ‘blessings’ from this supposed God Incarnate with all powers in his hand, as he repeatedly claimed. Besides, the supposed ‘diamonds’  are fakes – synthetic stones (see proof here),  Antonio Craxi was not enabled by it to stay in his position of status in the Sathya Sai Organization, nor to help his brother, Bettino Craxi, from total disgrace and exile.

“Notable among Baba’s international inner circle are Guilio Andreotti, former Prime Minister of Italy, currently on trial for murder of a journalist, former Italian Prime Minister Bettino Craxi, sentenced to 5 1/2 years of imprisonment for corruption and Princess Poihlavi, sister of the former Shah of Iran, caught in Switzerland in 1962 for carrying heroin.
