Supreme Court on protecting witnesses in Asaram case

Taking a serious view of recent incidents in which witnesses in criminal cases against Asaram Bapu were killed, the Supreme Court on Monday asked trial courts to provide protection to witnesses facing threat.

A bench of Justices A R Dave and A K Goel directed trial courts hearing cases against Asaram to pass appropriate orders for giving protection to witnesses if they were threatened. The court passed the order on a PIL filed by Augustine Castelino, a non-resident Indian living in Auckland, New Zealand. Castelino, in his plea, referred to the death of witnesses Amrut Prajapati, Akhil Gupta and Rahul Sachan and urged the court to order protection for all witnesses in three cases against Asaram pending in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
