Sai Baba and India’s atomic arsenal

Sathya Sai Baba’s hypocrisy is to say one thing, do the opposite

Few issues show Sathya Sai Baba’s hypocritical double-standard more distinctly than his various statements of the past against atomic weapons, while all the time he has been supporting and honouring some of India’s formost militarists. In former days he argued that India needed no nuclear weapon, and made the prophesy that all those nations which rely on these will themselves be turned to ashes! He gave the so-called “father of India’s atomic bomb”, Dr. S. Bhagavantam a foremost place in his entourage, until Bhagavantam left him in the early 1980s! Since then he has repeatedly honoured the instigator of the India-Pakistan nuclear arms race, former Prime Minister Atal Vihari Vajpayee and his party (the Bharatiya Janata Party which revelled in 2000 in the explosion of Indian nuclear devices). Not a word of criticism has Sai Baba made about the vast military spending of this and other governments, nor – of course-  has he criticised India’s production of more atomic weapons and the delivery vehicles. On the contrary, he has embraced the ex-President Kalam at repeated interviews and honoured him very pointedly in public, but this was the man who designed the delivery vehicle for India’s nuclear weapons capable of hitting Pakistan!

Sathya Sai Baba preaches peace and non-violence, so he could hardly have been in favour of nuclear weapons, especially when India was taking a moralistic line against the big nuclear powers (despite having exploded one device already themselves). Now that India is adopting a big power threatening capacity itself with nuclear weapons, he is completely silent! Not only that, he is ever lending moral and propaganda support indiscriminately to Indian governments and their leaders in his discourses. But many, many more crores are now being wasted, but the self-proclaimed ‘Omnipotent’ Lord God, worshipped as such by a line of feet-kissing Prime Ministers never says a word about this militarism and misuse of India’s riches, while 200 million have to get by on less than US$ 1/2 per day and 800 million Indians still live on less than $2 a day!
